    I've already messed up three seed starts so far I'm on my fourth one but I'm watching your videos this time. The first one I didn't know you were supposed to put water in the peat moss before you planted the seeds the second time I had a high wind that blew all my plants together and just dumped them all out in the pile and the third time I was having over watering issues that rotted my seeds. Next year I'm going to be a boss at this because now I understand Frost dates lol

    I’ve so enjoyed your videos because you really teach as well as show us. I have limited mobility but I want to grow a couple of tomato plants. I’ve just gotten my 10 gallon grow bags. I have potting mix. I only have a small cement patio. I live in Williamsburg Va. I’m thinking about a cherry tomato “Tiny Tim” And “Early Girl” tomato
    I’ve been feeding birds and squirrels. Would Marigolds planted around the grow pot help deter squirrels 🐿 or do I give up my dream of growing my own tomatoes? Thank You

      Thanks so much as that is my goal. Principles you can build off. Tiny Tim as 12-18 inch plants so you can put 2 in a 10 gallon pot BTW. Early Girls is a good one. It wont stop squirrels but they actually dont eat my tomatoes.

    Hi Gary, I have the wired shelving and purchased the exact LED lights from Walmart that you have. My concern is the heat produced from the lights where the circuit board is housed or whatever electrical setup is in the side contained area of the light. Is the amount of heat produced a concern for you? What indoor temperature are you growing in so that these circuits don't overheat or blowout? I had a fairly warm room that I was going to plant tomatoes and peppers with (2) lights per shelf and they got pretty hot just in an hour. I have a cooler room that I'm testing the light out and that one area still gets hot, but did have the light on all day. Thank you for all your wonderful informative videos. I have learned so much!

    Hi Gary! Exciting to get things going again for another season. Seed start container question... what ‘recycle number’ are your cells and small start containers out of curiosity? Maybe I’m a bit over the top on this, but I picked up a few dozen of the 3” style plastic pots at our local dollar store... $1.50 or whatever for 15... to use for up-potting, possibly tomato starts, but certainly planned for Cukes/Zukes. I note they are labeled as ‘recycle 3’. I see that 1, 2, 4 & 5 (I think 2 preferred) are listed as the safest options on nearly or all sites. 3/6/7 are listed to generally avoid. So, a overreacting gardener here? I mean they won’t be in them past their start time before transplant or up-pot. However, just curious what most of yours may be or if you really are concerned? Thanks!

    Absolutely love your channel Gary! Been following it as gospel - and very excited to start your hot pepper seeds!! One major concern I have though is that the humidity is only around 35% in and around the seed starts. Should I be using the humidity domes? I know you said not to - but does such a low humidity matter? I just started my seeds so don't have any germinated yet but will this low humidity affect them adversely once they germinate?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад

      I never use the domes as I found they just breed fungus and mold. If you can keep your trays watered well for what every reason, maybe use the domes. Otherwise I dont use them. If the soil is damp, they should germinate just fine.

      Sitting water can take oxygen out of the starting mix due to over saturation and it can cause lots of algae growth. It's good to let the soil dry out between watering. However, in many cases the sitting water doesnt do damage. Just about a potential risk.

      Keep it inside. You can use it after cools if you feel its not over saturated. I quicker way, if it is over saturated, is fill the cells the day before and they should be fine. With practice, you get the amount of water down and can use quickly

    Well I sterilize my seed starting mix and set it aside to cool in a pot in a lid on it. And then something came up like I had to go have surgery. So it's been sitting about 3 weeks. And while I assume it's still sterile? It kind of smells bad. So I don't really know if I want it in my house. You think it's still be okay if I took the lid off at for a day or two and maybe some of the smell would dissipate?

      Thank you for your reply. I just bought the greenstalk towers, some seeds and the vermisterra worm castings. I have been watching your videos for a few years now and enjoy the walks through your garden. I have been paralyzed to start seeds only when it says I should by the moon. Husband says it is the only way. I was trying to look at your videos and see if they lined up with when it says to plant but was unable to get exact dates to do that. Thank you again and keep the content coming.

    Is sterilizing necessary when you buy a starting /potting mix, or if you use peat in general? I bought peat, vermiculite and made my own compost to mix up (a la square foot gardening). Would I need to sterilize it if I use that mixture to start seeds? I did buy a kit for my kids to grow ornamental lettuce, strawberries and cucumbers and the starting mixture came with fungus gnat eggs which attacked and infested everything in the house :(.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад +1

      I think for peat, indoors, it is worth doing all the time. Outdoors nope.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      3200 should work. 5000L is a perfect amount. Do they need some nitrogen?

    So I sterilized my soil this last year and stirred it daily but it ended up molding before the week was up . How do I prevent this next time? I tried scrapping it off but ended up tossing it. Is there a way I could have saved it to use?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад

      If it was green it is algae. It comes from the water and the light just lets it grow. letting the tops dry helps. It can also come from excess nitrogen.

    Hi, I am starting a garden for the first time. I'm confused about the sterilization of my starter mix. I purchased Jiffy Natural & Organic Seed Sarting Mix, and it didn't state anything about having to do this. Is this still your recommendation? Also, I didn't see that you were using a heat mat fee germination. Is that needed before I can start?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад +1

      Congrats on your first. year. Jiffy or anything won't address gnat eggs and I use it and it has carried gnat eggs. I pretty much say sterilize all your mixes for indoor use. Fungus gnats are no fun. I just did a video on worm castings. it is not a must but that is what I add in after it cools and all that. You dont need a heat mat if your temps are in the upper 60's. I do use a single mat for hot pepper germination to speed it up but it is not needed.
