I think the show is better for ending with House addicted to Vicodin again because the hallucinations were never really about the Vicodin. I thought the Cuddy ending was really good because after years of trying to mentally fix himself Wilson and Cuddy want House to express his real feelings and he actually does it hurting both of them. It's like what Cuddy said about House when he told her she would be a lousy mom, he holds himself back, so as much as people say that was out of his behavior, it actually wasn't because he does hold himself back and when he doesn't you realize maybe people should hold back their true behavior. Seasons 7-8 are just fine in my opinion. This is a really good episode though. One of the best.

I agree with you! Albeit I'd rather describe House as dependent on Vicodin. He isn't a filthy addict from the street and doesn't take the Vicodin just for fun.
      House deserves better friends!
And the withdrawal with the subsequent forced sobriety was pointless. My best friend is a physician who worked with patients like House in different hospitals with different specialities. She's still mad at TPTB at how they handled House's chronic pain, especially in and after Broken. House's hallucinations are rather a delayed symptom of a traumatic brain injury (Bus crash?) that has been triggered by repeated severe stress. House had more than enough stress during season 5.
She would have prescribed him Qutipin, stress reduction and a long vacation/sabbatical. For example, a several weeks/months long roadtrip like the one at the end of the show but without having to fake his death and Wilson dying from cancer.

No. House is not a "happy ending story character".
His flaws run too deep. House as a character can't change. When we get to know that after him and Cuddy got together, he got kicked out of Med school. he did not seek her out. he "self destructed" and went his own way. Oblivion is his default state.

A little bit of sympathy for season 7? (SPOILER ALERT) We saw how House behaves when he's in love (like an idiot around Cuddy). How vicious he becomes after it blows; it's the same House we know but everything is doubled. It leads his self-destruction to peak in "After Hours". And he finally became open with Cuddy in "Moving On," admitting he feels hurt.
In the big picture, in season 6 and season 7, we saw House trying to change, keep being unhappy through the season, and get some results that save the day (because he was already at the end of his rope in the previous episode of Help Me). S7 starts with Now What? which was an excellent question. All the tension was resolved, and we entered unknown territory; everything seemed fine, with little struggles. Then, to reach the inevitable end with Bombshells, Cuddy just rejects House because he is House (not blaming her though). This leads to self-destruction, increasing tension, and the fall. It is the story of how House tried to change and failed. And becomes his unsustainable self again in Season 8. I'm not saying he learned nothing but I don't think he's way different than Season 5.
Besides the final scene, crashing Cuddy's home, everything was perfect. It felt like After Hours was the final episode; almost everyone's story arc was completed in that episode. So they may try to top that with the crashing scene, but I can't say I like it. But until then, the final episode was quite good.
Also, Master's arc was excellent. House says at the beginning of the arc, he wants to have the front seat when she crashes. Which is another prophecy that is realized through the season. And it just connects to, like in many seasons, you can't always get what you want.
I can't say much about Season 8; introducing two new characters into the team is a difficult choice. And I don't think they're as good as Masters or any of the show's characters.
It felt suck when House came back in the second episode. The hospital felt deserted. No one we know is around, House doesn't have any privileges. Even Wilson broke up with him (again).
Still, there are some great episodes like Nobody's Fault.
I'm still glad they have the final season, but it feels incomplete without Cuddy. I don't think Huddy got the end they deserved. They get just what they got...
One thing about the show that I could criticize is too many people die. Amber, Kutner, and now Wilson. 13 also has a low life expectancy, so too much death for 8 seasons. It's just starting to become a formula to make the plot interesting. Only Amber's death was properly planned, and it's perfect.
Kutner's death was unexpected, with the conclusion of no explanation (Simple Explanation with no explanation) and one of the leading factors of House's hallucination. I know Kal Penn has to leave, but they could send him away. They didn't have to kill him, so it was a choice. And finally, Wilson. Though his cancer episodes are great, I think it's a little bit too much death, and it becomes a plot device.

Yeah the following series aren't terrible and we always want more but its clear where this show should have ended if they were thinking of the show and not the money.

Cuddy and Lucas fit together perfectly fine! They were equally malicious when it came to play cruel pranks on House!
If someone is a cold and mean person then it is Cuddy! She took part in the betrayal that led to Stacy leaving House after his infarction and then in the episode Help Me she had the audacity to blame House for that nobody is waiting at home for him. Already her answer "To what?" to House's "I'm going home!" in the pilot was nasty. What a b*tch!
House doesn't need to be sober/clean! As a chronic pain patient he is entitled to get the medication that helps him the best regarding reducing his pain. If this medication happens to be a narcotic then so be it! In the civilized world, chronic pain is a valid illness!
Replacing Vicodin with Ibuprofen! What a bad joke! House might die from gastric bleedings caused by the Ibuprofen earlier than the Vicodin could destroy his liver.
And everyone who was attentive while watching the first 6 seasons, could know that Huddy was already doomed before it even started and only could end in a disaster. Ka-Boom! With his car right into her dining room.
How can anyone who loves Dr. Gregory House want that he has a relationship with someone that horrible like Cuddy is? She never really loved him. House deserves someone much better!
