What the hell did they do to that piano?!! The compression and whatever effects laid on it, sounds so unique and ethereal. So beautiful.
its how they spread it in the stereo mix. the piano could have a wide spread her voice could have narrow spread and just reverb. it gives the illusion to your ears that the piano is coming at different angels while the voice is right in front of you

It looks to be a Yamaha upright with a mute/muffler rail felt engaged between the hammers and strings, processed with a deep reverb. You can see it clearly at 2:00.

Besides the obvious things, Im loving that vintage sound and how it creeps through the beginning of the song, like shes walking through an abandoned house where the stuff was all just left there untouched for 50 yrs - pots on the stove, slippers by the sofa.

As a jazz vocalist, I have ALWAYS appreciated Yebba's commitment to flying deep into a modal closet and throwing out the most melodically appealing lines I've ever heard. Her collaborative accompanists must be so proud to work with her, from James Francies, Robert Glasper, PJ Morton, and sooo many more!!! She is in a class by herself. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Yebba!!!
I love how she’s like some wild unreal mix of gospel, jazz, r&b, and folk music, some of everything. I can only attempt to mimic her choices but I never would have been able to come up with them on my own.

I've never cried to a song so much in my life. This was like therapy. It has me contemplating a lot of my life. Yebba has an outstanding talent that I hope isn't squashed by the music industry. She embodies all of the greats. Very powerful, very other worldly talent.
Well.... dont listen to Heartbreak if you don't wanna cry. I think her mom died or committed suicide, like the first night she performed somewhere big if I recall what I read. Heartbreak is to her mom. I cant listen to it without balling my eyes out. I went to call my mom and play Heartbreak one day, and I remembered I can't. She's gone. Cried the rest of that day. Reading that Abbey lost her mom made it hit harder.

When I was in high school there were these super connecting/spiritual moments listening to certain artist like Frank ocean, Drake, Miguel, and other artist. There was an element of strategic simplicity, yet you could hear the immense amount of emotion and creativity through their voice, lyrics, and passion. Yebba... You're amazing.

I acknowledge and respect Adele’s gift in talent but I was never compelled to add her music to my playlists. And then this technical elegant vocal goddess that I just learned of today.
