  • I'm kicking off a new series on Henry VIII, the second Tudor monarch who ruled from 1509 until his death in 1547. He’s a figure that fascinates and divides opinion, often seen as either a tyrant or a complex ruler who achieved much during his reign. 🚩👑
Want to join me for a deeper dive? I’m hosting a members-only livestream here on RUclips this Sunday, 28th July, at 10pm UK time / 5pm New York time. Let’s chat Tudor history and share our views on this iconic king. 💬📜 You can become a channel member by clicking on "join" on my channel homepage or going to / @anneboleynfiles
In this series, I’ll explore the lives of those rumoured to be Henry VIII's illegitimate children. While he had three legitimate children-Mary I, Elizabeth I, and Edward VI-and one acknowledged illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset, there were whispers of other offspring. One such intriguing figure is Ethelreda Malte, whose life blends fact, conjecture, and Tudor intrigue. 🤫🔍
Join me as I unravel the mystery of Ethelreda Malte, also known as Etheldreda, Audrey or Esther. Born in the late 1520s or early 1530s, she was described as the "bastard daughter of John Malte, a tailor of the Great Wardrobe, by Joan Dyngley alias Dobson." Yet, there are compelling hints that she might have been Henry VIII's own child. 👶🔍
Could the king's generous grants to Ethelreda and John Malte suggest a deeper connection? What about her alleged close relationship with Queen Elizabeth I? And who was Ethelreda's mother, really? Dive into the enigma of Ethelreda Malte with me and discover the untold stories of the Tudor court. 📜👸

Just read that about Ethelreda that she had a daughter with her husband Harington and then died the same month that Queen Elizabeth I was crowned Queen. Also some interesting tidbits, Ethelreda's husband is the ancestor of the Earls of Sandwhich and actor Kit Harington.

It’s always seemed slapdash to me that Mary Boleyn’s children are automatically assumed to be Henry’s children by so many, despite the actual evidence not specifying how long the affair went on. It simply may have been a brief relationship that got exaggerated later to attack the Boleyn’s reputation. It’s disappointing to see the slut shaming towards Mary, with her portrayals in fiction often making promiscuity her main character trait, and ignoring that maybe she didn’t really have a choice in being Francis and Henry mistress.

Some of the so called evidence that some of these people use for proof is that Catherine oldest child looked like Elizabeth. They don’t stop to think that of course there was a chance that some of the kids might look like Elizabeth due to the fact that both Catherine and Elizabeth mothers were sisters. Both of my brother have kids that look alike. Looking alike can occur in families especially if the genes are strong. The Boleyn genes were clearly strong.

Extremely slapdash. You get arguments like "Henry granted William Carey loads of land!", but as Claire has pointed out, Henry granted land to loads of people, & he wasn't sleeping with all their wives. And of course you can't discount the influence of Philippa Gregory here, the bane of historical accuracy. I guess at least she doesn't sl*t-shame Mary- she's about the only woman Philippa DOESN'T vilify- but yes, it's disgusting to sl*t-shame anyone, & particularly for being a king's mistress- how likely is it that they could say no? Is it definite that Mary had an affair with Francis I though, or was that just more gossip &/or sl*t-shaming, plus the fact that Francis _did_ chase everything in a skirt?

In a way, though, the Boleyns got the last laugh. Whether you believe Mary’s kids were Henry’s or not, they did well for themselves, and I love the fact that their bloodline married into the current British Royals. Meanwhile, despite everything Henry did to try to have a son and see his dynasty continue, it ended anyway, at least in part because of the impact of his actions on his children.

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  2 месяца назад +7

Yes, I really think that it fits more with what we know about Henry for his relationship with Mary Boleyn to have been before her marriage, like with Elizabeth Blount, and that he then arranged a good match for her when he'd finished with her.

Fun to hear about little known Tudor people and stories.
Had not heard about Ethelreda, who stands out with an Anglo Saxon name. Makes a change from all the Marys, Margarets, Catherines, Annes and Elizabeths etc.
Had she been born a man, Henry may have acknowledged her had she really been his offspring. At least she benefited from from Henry's wealth in some way whatever the reason.
Easy to imagine Henry having bunk ups with a laundress or two especially during his pursuit of Anne. It was a long time for Henry to remain chaste, don't know if he could hold out that long.

I was really hoping there was a physical description of her. I think all his legitimate heirs look like each other even though they had different mothers. It's a little crazy that in my brain if she had red hair, it would have been enough confirmation. Like there is no one else in Tudor England with red hair.
I had heard before that he had a child by a laundress, but never knew their names. It actually raises him a little in my opinion that he provided for her regardless if she was his or not. I like that you named them.

    Hi Claire,
I recently went home for a weekend and my parents were really into the show ‘The Serpent Queen’ based on Catherine de Medici. I know you like to review period dramas on this channel sometimes. Is this one you’ve done? If so what did you think? Following on from that, have you done a video on Catherine de Medici before? Her story seems very interesting. If not would you consider doing one in the future? She seems a very divisive figure so it would be interesting to hear about what primary sources say and how much we can trust or read into the main sources we have on her.
Thank you for all your hard work and many videos. They are always very interesting.

I never heard of this contender for a daughter, this real interesting i always leaned on the side of Catherine Cary was his daughter. There seems to be few parallels between Catherine lives this maybe daughter. This might be a pattern of how he took care of them. I have always leaned toward Catherine Cary because of how close Elisabeth I was to her and how she acted toward her. If this women served Elisabeth at the same time with Catherine that is interesting.

This one is tantalisingly possible. I tend to dismiss the other rumoured fatherings, because I see Henry as being proud of any products of his loins, 😊, but if the mother was very lowly born, and he was courting Anne Boleyn at the time, well, there might have been reason not to acknowledge? I agree there's not enough evidence, but the more I think on it.....ooooooh.

I think that the level of Henry's generosity can suggest at least a possibility that she was his daughter. Giving extra support to his loyal tailor is one thing - a gift of yearly wages or even that £1000, but to bestow multiple lands? All because he felt sorry for his royal tailor to be the sole carer of a single child? People had multiple children on their regular wages, and there are no records of Henry running a proto-child benefit scheme for his staff?

Viewers will also be surprised to learn that King Edward 7th and Queen Alexandra had an illigitimate son.
The then Prince Bertie and Princess Alexandra, met in September 1861 by arrangement, with a view of marriage.
By December 1861, her pregnancy was obvious and Prince Albert furiously confronted his son, Bertie, passing shortly after.
The confrontation was hushed up by announcing the incidence was in connection with a dalliance between Bertie and an actress, to spare the dignity and moral standing of both the UK and Danish Royal Families.
Alexandra was sent to South Africa, where she met the intended foster parents and in June 1862, their son was born, unannounced, baptized with an assumed name and sadly, abandoned.
Alexandra returned home to become engaged to Bertie and eventually they married, thus legitimising their eldest son, whose descendants have irrefutable DNA evidence of their zero distance between them and the Royal Family relatives.
    Zero distance DNA evidence.

I rather doubt what then constituted rewarding a faithful retainer or sympathy for one having an illegitimate daughter would have extended to such amounts of money. And Henry VIII was an extremely mercenary fellow. From what is known about him I rather doubt that is the case. I never heard of this myself but why wasn’t the subject of current descendants of Etheldreda through her daughter Hester and seeking out dna, speculated on?

I'm not sure what "British" is. William the Conqueror, or William I, was French, we'd been invaded by Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings over the centuries and it was the norm for monarchs to marry foreign royalty, so what do you count as "British"?
