This is one of the best video's about genealogy. I wish this could be shared everywhere. We get too many people claiming Cherokee, but almost never backed up with documentation. Great job Ashley! Wado.

I just found out I'm related to Chief DoubleHead, not the chief I would pick to be related to but it explains my Dad's generational curse. Jackson& Mann line

I have Cherokee and Chickasaw ancestry. Decendants of Chief Moy Toy (Cherokee) and Chief James Colbert (Chickasaw). I finally know where I come from. And have my whole family tree from my dads side. 💞

Mama was born Sizemore, Sand mountain, Valley head, Fort Payne Alabama. When I hit a dead end in the geneology searches, it usually means I have found another Native. So far, I have found many Cherokees, and also Chickahominy, Shawnee, and Crow. Much love to my family.

I'm a Sizemore descendant as well. We should talk. Definitely Catawba, Shawnee, and possibly Creek in my ancestry.

My ggf was a Cherokee. Last name Jackson from hills of NC and came down to SC. I can't get past his parents names in 1880s. William Christian Jackson. My maternal grandmother had almost black eyes, hair was so black it was blue and dark skin.

I'm wondering if we re related. My father was John Richard Vann. He was born in the area of Oklahoma you mention. I do not know his father's name but his mother was Charlotte Poindexter. His father I am told was a full-blooded Cherokee. I have no information on his side of the family. I am 66 years old and moved to California when I was 5 years old.

Don't be discouraged the Ancestors are there. You can be Cherokee without being eligible for Citizenship and Also there were alot of Cherokee indians that were enslaved. Alot of Indians lost theirs heritage and said they were Cherokee but didn't know their actual tribe. Lastly you can find indians listed as Mulatto, Black,White, and Other ; There was a paper genocide also.

Yes, I was surprised Ashley seemed unaware of the Texas Cherokees. They’re ineligible for enrollment because of the mediation services they provided after the Alamo. Not only that, but many Natives went to work on the oil wells in Texas in the very early 20th century, too, so the fact an ancestor is on a federal census instead of a reservation one really doesn’t mean much.
There was no option to be listed as Native or Indian on any paperwork prior to 1970. Choices were: black, white, mulatto. That was it. It’s called a Pocahontas Law, pioneered by Virginia. It says because Pocahontas married a white man, Natives are recognized as White people for paperwork demographics “out of respect.” It’s a strange and fascinating topic to research.
