I like seeing an actual Open cart surgery and not another open cart cleaning. nice job!
Sometimes a competent cleaning is all it takes tho lol
I like it when all it needs to do is be cleaned. If that's all it takes, I'm good! But these are definitely much more satisfying to see working again.
I DID say "transplant". You did a hell of a job on this one.
No rare game is going to get the better of John Rigg's.
Brilo pads, the greens pads that are used to clean pans and pots, work wonders with pins that can't be cleaned with brasso or alcohol. I have brought back to life many "dead" games with it! You have to wet the pad with water and pretty much wet sand the pins and dry the pins with a clean cloth or towel
That label looks like napoleon dynamite dragged it behind the bus.
Hey, that's awesome that you were able to get this working. Great job! :D
Have you ever tried letting the pins sit in vinegar for a bit? A friend picked up TMNT II and it was in terrible condition. Cleaned using alcohol, Brasso and then soaking in vinegar.Works great now!
Nice work. You put in the work to fix this game and now it is listed on ebay for $500 and is apparently "authentic and original" lol
Thanks for saving Bonk NES dude. He lost the race against Mario and Sonic back in the day buy we all have a place in our heart's for him.
You're such a cool dude, I love watching your vids. Keep it up John!
Wow... That is a crazy game to have to fix. I always wanted to try a Bonk game and never did til about a week ago, or so. Got Bonk's Adventure on the TG16 (finally), at the PRGE Swap Meet. It totally kicks ass. I assume the NES port kicks slightly less ass, but it is still cool that they ported it at all. Really cool repair this time, John!
love the channel. funny story i got a broken sega genesis game from amazon and didnt want to bother with returns so i did a transplant and it worked. keep up the the great channel
i never knew you could swap the boards. if i ever find a non working game like bonks and its cheap i'll try this. great video riggs
Good Job saving the Game.. Some buyers won't care to much... Your the King... RIP for the other game though.... :{...
The replacement circuit board is still an official NES product and the same type used for Bonk's Adventure anyways so nothing changes in terms of value.
Nice save dude. You sir are an NES angel
Just removing the ROMs and then reseating them in the original board may have been enough to fix the problem. We also didn't see you clean the original board's contacts with a pencil eraser or brasso, etc -- if they were dirty, it would have made sense to clean them and try testing them again. It just seems like you had decided to do the board swap the entire time, rather than trying to fix the simple things first.
Michael's Workshop i thought the exact same thing!
the pins looked like the copper was coming off.
He tried off cam and it didn't work
To be fair, he said he did use brasso off camera and tested it and it still didn't work. It still would have been more interesting to see a bit more troubleshooting before swapping the board.
shout out to Chile, Love it! Chile loves you to bud.
I don't have them anymore, but I bought my Bonk and Flintstones 2 from Chile for an awesome price. This was several years ago, though.
you ever consider soldering sockets into the boards rather than soldering the chip in? or maybe have a test board setup with sockets to test roms before spending the time to solder them in?
John your videos are great and your tips are super helpful. You've got me itching to get my own eprom writer....
I don't see any problem with swapping out the circuit board with an original vintage nintendo exact replacement. There should be no reduction in its value as long as the workmanship is up to nintendo standards. Anybody who thinks otherwise is welcome to express any concerns.
I agree...it's still using Nintendo parts...there was nothing "reproduction" used...no repo boards, no EPROMS, no shell swap...
Yeah, a game that doesn't run is a game not worth having. Or do those people actually expect a person to painstakingly restore a part worth 25 cents at best?
The authenticity is where the value lies, so it will drop in value, less people want to buy a refurbished game as to one used but original
I know its late... But... I absolutely agree. Just be honest about any makeshiftery. Also, Rigg is thee best! Always!
Lol! Riggs invest in a FLUKE multimeter. One of the best in my opinion. Very popular in my profession anyway.
Awesome job John, you are my hero BONK LIVES!
As of August 10th 2021 there are 12 Bonks Adventures on Ebay the cheapest being $1,169.99. Cheapest bid $455 3 days left.
Wow! A great game in perfect condition.
Sweet!!!!! I'm happy that you got it working again!!!
It's sort of depressing watching the games that don't make it :(
I love this open cart videos keep em coming
Yay for Justin! Good job Riggs :)
For sure! He's stoked. I told him I'd happily trade it, now it's working, but I'm sending it back.
I know its good to be honest when selling a transplanted game. To me though this is as good as an original game because its the original chips in an original nintendo donor board thats good enough for me.
I had no idea that this game existed for NES where the heck was I back then.
One of those late-release titles. Most (including myself) had already moved on to SNES at this time.
Honestly, whatever the donor game was, It probably wouldn't lose much value with a reproduction board. You should try to get some of those donors back into working condition rather than considering them a totally destroyed writeoff.
Hi John! Big fan! I have a question. One of my favorite pastimes is opening NES carts & restoring them to pristine condition. I’ve never attempted a Transplant. I’ve seen every variation of NES boards. My question is, is there a release date you can go by to know what form of NES board you’re going to find? I really want to try a transplant.
I never knew there was a Bonks Adventure for nes. Where've I been? 🤔
Does intensive game repair effect the price or value of the cartridge? I.E wires soldered to complete connection on pins or worn out contact points.
Luckily there are a decent amount of really common TLROM boards.
Totally!
I'd be more than happy to take a Bonk's Adventure with a swapped board!
This is a great video also tiny Toon adventures what tiny Toon adventures what
WHAaAAT?!
so awesome you were able to save it. sux its not "factory stock" anymore but it works!
And it didn't hap-hazardly give it to Wood at PRGE 2015
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games yea not finest moment ;)
It is still factory stock. The replacement PCB is the exact same as the original.
charvelgtrs its like changing parts in cars. Some people care some don't. But its not something you shouldn't tell someone. Some collectors will care
I don't see why they would. Its not like that PCB is unique to Bonk's Adventure. You'd have to be the most anal collector for something like that to bother you.
Insane how this game costs more than a TurboGrafx with all 3 bonk's adventure games.
What's even more insane is the idiots that pay $500+ for a copy. Its those types of buyers why prices for retro games keep rising.
charvelgtrs no doubt. It is a pretty rare game so I can understand the price being higher than most NES games, but I would never pay that amount, especially since I could play superior versions elsewhere.
One of my good friends has one of those NES carts that contain 60+ games on it, and I've tried to get it working for him through conventional means, but have had no luck. I know it's probably not considered a legit cart because of what it is, but would it be eligible for something like this? I'd love to get it working for him, it's from his childhood and he used to play tons of the games on it.
good soldering skills
Love your channel and great vid! :)
Awesome Job Your'e A Legend Can't wait to play it
Riggs, next time try using DeXoit on the cartridge pins.
I'll check it out. Thanks!
If you get it I like it in the brush bottle applicator. It's the pure DeOxIT (not watered down with mineral oil) and you have precise control of where you put it. People are always swapping out the cartridge connectors on NES front loaders, it's not necessary with DeOxIT . It's that good. You might have to give it a few hours on some really bad oxidation.
www.amazon.com/Booster-Electric-Connection-Enhancer-Lubricant/dp/B0002BBVN2/
The multimeter uses a 9v battery that probably needs to be replaced.
Can that board be repaired? Bad capacitor maybe?
I got the same soldering iron. I got it on Amazon.
John I got a Sega cart with Earth Worm jim 2 it doesn't work how much do you charge? contact me thank you
who cares if its not the orig board its a working copy
Ahh the ole switcharoo eyyyy?
keep up the great work Riggs.
I would dump the roms and check for integrity before soldering them to the other board.
Once I was given an original kabuki Quantum Fighter famicom cart with horribly garbled graphics. It turned out it was a bad CHR mask rom (unfortunately it happens). To get it working properly again I had to replace the bad CHR with a programmed eprom with the right code. Cart fixed, 50% original since then!
Did you went to Chile? Awesome
Love the tripod.
I have a few. They're little wooden boxes I keep repro parts in and I stack them up to hold my phone when filming.
Nice job Riggs!
good job and cool videos!!!!
Would you be able to fix a Toshiba Windows Vista Computer
It shuts down at random times, it seems to be a falty motherboard.
Good job 👍
I saw this game at a play n trade a few years back. They wanted $400 for it.
tf
Plants and Games it's a rare game. At this point $400 is a really good price
David Garcia yea I noticed the price has risen quite a bit.
David Garcia Can't you get a rom and import it to the nes game itself though?
The TG16 version is about $30 on average and is considered to be superior. Unless you're going for a complete NES collection it's a waste of money imo.
It would have worked fine in the cartridge
brilliant maneuver sir..FIX MY TICK!!! Thanks!
great job John:)🖒🖒👌
Glad I don't sell retro games! I would forget to let them know the chips were swapped and would sell them off lol
Do you send the cart back to the person?
I did, then they traded it off (As they told me they would) and it, from there, ended up on Ebay. I should've signed it :)
Screw falls out the back at beginning of vid.
My Stadium Events is not working, can you fix it? 😆
NICE JOB!!!
Will there ever be another Bonk game ?
nice cool game
Nice job!!
Can I buy this if you fix it by vid end :)
Why don't you tell what game you used?
keep the original board with the game, is good preserve with the game even if its not working.
if tyres were collectibles, I would do it.
The board is not unique to Bonk's Adventure. Its just a standard board found in many other NES games.
You rock man!!
muito bom show ✌👍
oxidation
oxidation ?
Andrew Stephens looks like Water damage
Must admit David... that it was a complete shot in the dark !!
im jealous
Why does he grab the circuit board and its components with his bare hands? That alone is unprofessional imho. I feel like all he did was clean the module contacts and cut the rest out to make it feel like the circuit board clammering would actually do the tricks and help solving the issue while in real cleaning the contacts alone already worked ;-)
