Back in 09 my dad had bought one. A couple months ago he decided to sell, I've always loved this car. So now I'm a proud owner of an e60 that's just clocked 70k km
The 525i is the same engine as the 530i N52. With a 3 stage manifold swap and a free flash you can bring it up from the 215hp of the 525i to the 258 of the 530i
It seems to be aging as well as the E34 5 Series (predecessor to the E39) has. That's how I view this design. A 2000's take on the E34. The way some interior parts are shaped remind me of it as well.
The man who actually put pen to paper was a man by the name of Davide Arcangeli, who was a young Italian designer that worked under Bangle at the time. The key in the E60 was the converse design of the doors that made the car slimmer and less bulky. I loved the design as soon as it came out and I bought a 530i Msport in lovely metallic blue. I still have it it runs well after 155000 miles. The car was build very close to original design and had very little changes when it went into production. I had a E39 525i for fours before but good as the E39 was the E60 was on another level in handling and performance. It drives with a fluency that no other I have car I have had has. The N52 engine was also one of the best engines BMW made. It stills revs to 7000 rpm and is smooth as silk.
Interesting! I didn't know that about the designer. I have an 07 530xi touring 6 speed, I've owned just about every brand out there, this thing is amazing, every feature that could exist they put into it. I found the turn signals and cruise and seat controls really unusual at first, but realized that BMW changed it because it was better their way, like most of the car.
Personally favor the 530i N52B30. The B25 has oil leak issues like hell. The B30 just needs good care, new thermostat etc. and timing chain to be checked
Download the .pdf manual, read the manual regarding the voice command... it does work, but only in specific ways, it's not the same as the modern or phone voice commands. For example, you can tell it "Dial", followed by the 7 numbers, and it will dial the numbers you've told it. But I don't use it, I just go to the IDrive bluetooth, all my phone's contact numbers are displayed here, along with top eight numbers, and I just select the number I want to dial.
I think the bmw's before this look absolutely hideous! Like some stale baguettes. This car's design looks quite nice and modern, even though its relatively old.
I agree I think the ones before this were just very dull, but so were most cars in the 90's. This was one of the first cars in the world which made car design interesting again and that was controversial at the time.
It's a nice looking car and definitely aged very well. It's a shame it's got poor reliability and the engines while strong are plagued with many issues.
