Amusing some think of Latvia as eastern Europe. The Baltics are historically and culturally apart from former eastern block states and were historically very anti-Russian as well. Mikrotik is a great company. Founder and CEO John Tully actually sent the first Routerboard for the U. S. to me back in the early 2000s. Wish I kept it instead of putting it into deployment!
It is awesome to see that there is a product out there like Firewalla that exists. I only knew of Trend Micro Network Security but it requires a subscription. :P Good to know so I can recommend something to regular users who want plug and play improved security. I don't like Security Onion as I am not a fan of Ubuntu, I prefer CentOS so one can grab RockNSM as a replacement. You can also grab a $20 TPLink 5port easy smart switch which can port mirror.
Is promiscuous mode required on the device? I didn't hear you mention it being needed at all, which seems kinda strange given that you are getting traffic for other devices... or does the ARP poisoning kinda take care of that for you?
Maybe I’m missing something but at 9:30 John said there is a intro to SOC class next week. But on the training schedule the next one that I see is not until 8/30/21.

it was hard to make from scratch my enterprise grade home network on a small budget ie free softwarewise. love the arp poison idea
