- A vid from Crewe now showing a variety of traction and workings. Classes 31, 37, 47, 81, 85, 86, 87, 303, DMUs on light engine moves, parcels, Inter-City and Regional services, just about everything on here is now history! The golden age of trainspotting for diesel and electric enthusiasts. Wish I’d been around to experience it but I was born a fair few years too late! Great video
Thank you.... i think we all say we were born too late and missed things. I was 2 when the last main line steam ran and have never seen a proper steam working, so they don't mean as much as blue DMU & EMUs or blue locomotives, which is what i grew up with. Although i have seen a BR blue steam loco.... on the Vale of Rhediol back in 1981!
Yes I was born in 1965 and was spotting by the age of 6, still missed many warship, hymek and NBL class 22s although I saw all the Westerns….. BR Blue and the remaining green (albeit with full yellow ends) locomotives were my era but even in 1988 things were still a lot better than today’s railway…… very enjoyable video and very representative of that pre privatisation era as sub sectors and new liveries started to materialise…. the class 37 program was virtually finished with various sub classes…… Sprinters were appearing everywhere and locomotive haulage became harder to come by, and those were mostly ETH fitted class 47s but it was still possible to obtain non heat freight locomotives if you were in the know (access to TOPS helped) ….. nice one and thanks for the memories 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🏴😎
Oh Lord.... Thank you so so much for posting this video.... Absolutely brilliant, brings back so many happy memories of the days trainspotting at Crewe, as well as other stations and depots up and down the lengths and breadths of the UK.... Perhaps I'm a bit of an old fogey but I think that the rolling stock and locomotives were far more interesting back then...... Oh happy memories....... Now where did I leave my notepad, pen and binoculars???....
Thanks for your comments.... Crewe is nowhere near as exciting these days sadly.....
Wonderfully eclectic range of locos and liveries, as befitting the period. Crewe was a hive of activity back then. You never had to wait long to see something interesting. Passenger, freight, parcels, diesels, electrics, units, locos.... you had it all!
Sadly the same can't be said today.
No, it is quite tame today.......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Hope it doesn't sound like a silly question to ask you but, what is Crewe like these days for spotting?... I've passed (and stopped) at Basford Hall a few times, but it seems fairly quiet to how it used to be....
@@nigelbevan8449 Crewe isn't the place it once was. I still pass through and still film. There are lots of units of course but very few locos or freight movements through the station. You get odd moves of course, but most freight goes along the avoiding lines. There's always the chance of a new unit on test and perhaps some action on the old Crewe Deisel depot now in use by LSL.....
A real gem of a film, every scene has interest in it, great to see the early electrics plus 37430 the first loco I rode on mainline, two years after this was filmed.
I remember these days, there was never a dull moment and always the enjoyment of the day.
Especially at the end of platform 12 near the diesel depot.......
Great to see those 81s and 85s in this video. I always thought they looked odd with their slanted faces; it made them look more interesting than the 86s. Thank you.
My pleasure.... I imagine they thought the raked back look suited high speed travel, similar to the HST's i suppose......
il wish had a time machine lovely days watching locos always different trains coming up the line and down very freindly times
Great video of the variety we used to have back then.
You only miss them when they are gone .
Thanks for sharing Soi.👍😎
My pleasure.....
Miss the roarers the class 81s they sound good at speed I used to buzz off them flying through levenshulme near stockport in the mid 1980s happy days of propper traction locomotives!!!😎
Those signallers couldn't have had too much rest. An insane number of station workings.
Yes, Crewe was always very busy.... I imagine there were several on at the same time.....
Fantastic. Not an orange vest in sight ✊
Back in the days of old school railway......
What’s the issue with wearing a hi vis?
@@bfapple Why do you need to wear hi viz anyway?
@@nigelbevan8449 Hm, so that other personnel are aware of my presence, no?
Unusual to see loco changes from electric to diesel on southbound trains.
Nice to see a proper 37-hauled set of Mk 2 stock on a Cardiff working before it went over to the ghastly 155s.
Nice white Capri with rubber-bumper side trim on the diesel depot! I like the two experts with their heads under the bonnet of the red Mini too.
Quite a time piece this vid. The class 47 loco cahnge could be for a service running via Alsager which was unwired back then.
omg a class 81 in action
There is more, i have some on ECS at Euston.
Great footage.
Got to love the class 127 parcel units.
Crewe used to be brilliant overnight with many parcels trains.
Some would have 26s on them too!
I always palnned to do an overnight filming session but never got around to it sadly...
Thats some hardcore spottin in the rain there chief, nice one! Loads of intersting stuff in '88 there.
For modellers of the era, there's 31178 which was given DCE cabside strips and red BS shed stickers within 2 months of this vid, being around this time that DCE strips were being applied to loco's. She also had white body-side no's replacing black cabside no's, and an extra OLE warning sign above the boiler gauge on the other side for some reason. Possibly from weed-killing duties perhaps. .
Also of note is how fast weathering appears on loco's. 47615 was painted into her Rf plain triple grey 3-4 weeks before this vid (photed her in the rain outside paint shop at SF DRS 23.7.88 after overhaul) and is already looking rather filthy by now! And a rather unique livery too with red buffer-beams and cowlings, and SF didn't move the nameplates so was never given sub-sector logo's. Her black marker light panels didnt last too long either, going yellow in 1989. Also, one of a handful of Rf 47's given a lower than standard body-side break-line, therefore thicker black window surrounds, another SF thing! . . Lasting in this livery until repainted into Res 2.92, was then next overhauled at Donny and renumbered 47747 in 5.94. And prior to this vid, she was always a fave being part of the GWR 150 celebrations, given a fresh standard blue paint-job with red buffer-beams 4.85. And previously being overhauled/repainted at Crewe in June 1984.
You know your locos! Yes, it was a wet day, i had been at Warrington earlier and it was pi**ing down! But i got some great video there as well. One of my Dad's mates worked at Stratford including a spell in the DRS. He was involved in some Stratford's more quirkier loco repaints! And it doesn't take long for locos/trains to get dirty, wind/rain/brake block dust all add up!
Great video - a real shot of Nostalgia as I’m originally from Crewe. It was an absolute hive of activity back then locomotive wise. So sad to see what’s become of the diesel depot and railway works now.
Yes, it is a shadow of its former self. I thought Crewe Diesel Depot now had a new owner and was still in railway use?...
It's thriving again now under Locomotive Services
Great video, takes me back to the many times I spent on the platforms at Crewe in the early 80's when it was loco's and not the endless stream of multiple units it is now.
I want to go back and video today, just to see what is still about. But, yes it certainly won't be as interesting......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Be prepared to be bored. I find Stafford is better, as you have the freight that doesn't take the avoiding lines or terminates at Basford hall.
Used to love going to Crewe in late 80's & early 90's.
Took my 6 yo Gt Nephew there a few ago, it's like a ghost town now!!!
Yes, there's not much adventure to be had there now. And the actual station is a dump that has seen better days!
Brings back WONDERFUL memories. ♥️♥️♥️😊😊😊 when BRITISH RAIL WAS GOD'S WONDERFUL RAILWAY.
Thank you. I wouldn't say Crewe was GRW though!......But i do have some nice vids uploaded from the Western Region......
Great vid, always enjoyed Crewe back in the 80's. Love the class 81 pass through light at the beginning.
That's the one that then stables on the Depot. I assume it may have ran light from the electric depot after an exam or repairs.
Good video of various classes of work horses on freight duties in the 1980s I wish I could go back to them days as things wasn't as boring as they are now especially the railways!!!
Yes, it was a very busy place back then especially with Crewe Diesel depot still being open.....
Yet another truly amazing video soi keep'em coming it's good to watch the good old day's of train's 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Have no fear, there are LOTS more to come!
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I absolutely look forward to it soi 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Wow. What a great video. Thank you very much for the great footage of locos we used to take for granted.
My pleasure....
My Trainspotting days. I miss them.
I still do a bit. I was out at Paddington to see the last HST's run out of there, i even scored two poiwer cars for haulage, how's that for a bit of last day luck?...
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Another iconic train finished service. Let's hope they won't all be scrapped. That would be a crime.
Parcels DMU 5:11 were a conversion of the St Pancras class 127,
these had the bigger 238hp engines and torque converter transmission.
As i understood it they were hydraulic transmission and ran long after the WR hydraulics had finished!
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus They had a similar transmission to the class 150s. Variable revs torque converter up to 48/50 mph then a lock-up into fixed ratio "top gear" beyond that.
At one time a few were used for a short while on the Barking-Gospel Oak line in the 1980s, in NSE days.
They were nice old units, i've had a few rides on them along the Midland Main Line back in the late 1970s.
Great video of Crewe 👍🏻 love the DMU parcel units lol 😆 Maybe Amazon could convert some second generation DMUs into fast parcel trains 🤔 Great for inner city delivery with electric vans 👍🏻😆
Great to see the original AC electrics still going. I wouldn't have expected 81s though. I remember 85s on freights such as chemicals and vans
I still have more film with these old ladies in action, i will upload over time....
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Thanks. I'd like to see more of the early AC electrics:-)
Hi Soi, another great film selection Ed🤓
Thank you, i aim to please!
that class 47 that went past at 1:38 is still going - sort of. it's a Class 57 - 57,603 'Tintagel Castle' hauling sleeper trains.
They certainly are survivors the class 47s. It helped of course they were BR's largest loco class and worked all over the country!
Got a model of 57603 in current GWR livery, and, half a sleeper rake to go with it.
Great footage, pitty Crewe is so dead now. Lots of ghosts at the North End platform by 5A.
Back in the days when we had trains and loco's !
Crewe was always a good place to catch some action. I haven't been for quite a while but i think it may still have its moments......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus - Indeed Crewe was a good place and a good depot with always something going on somewhere but today it is a shadow of it's former self !
Sounds like it was pissing down!
Nice one Soi and no Buddleia in sight!
A cunning Network Rail and TOC plan to eradicate train enthusiasm from the system; worked for me!
Not sure what you mean. The Class 81-85 locos were gone years before privatisation happened.
I was there briefly in 1989
I miss those days.
I left the UK for the second time in 1990. I enjoyed the railways from 1978 to 1990, when I came back to the UK it has all but vanished. Everything was plastic and lacked any character. Is this really progress? The railway scene really is rubbish now. Would love to go back and have a day at Crewe, or even at Derby my home town. Great videos mate! I remember doing a bog unit quite often (Platform 5 bay platform) from Derby to Crewe and there was always plenty to see, on the way including Cockshute stabling point at Stoke. I bunked most depots but I got thrown out of CD.
Trying to get round Crewe showed some courage!...lol
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Ironically I went around 3rd rail depots like SL and HG dozens of times with no problems. WN was hit and miss. OC was cake, SF only kicked off there once. TO, never kicked out ever.
@@johnyoungieyoung123 Me and my mate only got as far as the horse siding, the one at the bottom of the car park ramp. We cabbed all the scrappers there in the late 90's.
Wonderful footage especially all those roarers! Many thanks for uploading these 👍
I have a few shots of the 81's at Euston on ECS moves plus a few 85s here & there.
Nice to see the AL Electrics. They had style although damned uncomfortable to drive.
Bit like spending the night ballasting on a 37 then? lol But i'd rather had one of them than a rancid 66 even if the cab seats reclined!!!
EPIC, & a Scottish 303 to boot..👍🏻👍🏻
Some of the 303's were sent south to work in the Manchester/crewe area for a few years at this time.
That’s a Manchester one. They had a very similar livery
I was trainspotting back then , make me laugh if I seen myself on one of these videos
I uploaded a photo to Facebook of a Deltic railtour leaving KX in 1981 and someone on the group recognised himself & his Dad in my shot, so you never know! There is more filming from Crewe which i will upload at a later date.
Love the AL1 ...
Good days
3:52 what was Bodie doing in the rail yard?
After the Professionals and Who Dares Wins he may have been a bit hard up for work?.......lol
😂😂😂😂
I would love to hear a class 81/82/83/84/85//86/87 roaring its arse off on a railtour as it's about time they were all made to earn there keep and it would attract a big crowd I bet as we never get many ac/ railtours and if we do it's always class 86/87 hauled sad to say!!!😎
The others would need a fortune to get back to main line standards it would never be re-couped from a few railtours sadly....
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus sad news isnt it I miss the old roarers screaming out of Manchester Piccadilly station and I loved to see them in the late 80s as them were the best days for uk locomotives I seen the class 89 on a few euston trains 25 year ago
@@justinobrien3593 I don't recall the 89 working out of Euston....It was an East Coast loco and work out of Kings Cross, the same as when it was resurrected with GNER.....
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I seen it in man Piccadilly a few times in the late 80s 1987/88 working the euston trains that was just before we got the class 90s 91s it seems like yesterday it's hard to believe its 3 decades ago! Wow 😎
@@justinobrien3593 I've read it was used on test on the WCML, based at Crewe Electric but didn't enter passenger service until it was transfered to Hornsey where it ran on the ECML. I don't think i ever captured it on video although i did manage a ride behind it once....
I wonder how the railways would have turned out had it not been privatised and had received the investment (particularly electrification of certain lines) it desperately needed?
Hard to tell. If BR had been given all the extra cash, we could have had a world class railway. BR only recieved a quarter of the 6 billion the 'private' railway recieved per year, and then only in one yearly settlements unlike the 5 year Control Periods now!
Given the widely considered failures of the Modernisation Plan, not that much different.
I do wonder though in my own neck of the woods how NE England from Sunderland to Alnwick might have looked had we gone for a "Merseyrail" approach vs the TW Metro.
I wonder why a first aid man was required at the ticket barrier.
Maybe an altercation over tickets? And someone got clumped!
👍👍👍
A lot of Capri cars
Depot staff cars i should imagine. Maybe a lot of fans of the Professional s worked there? lol
I would have preferred the escort mk2 RS2000 Mexico myself, but the capri wiould do!
Another, dirty admittedly, world innit. . . . . - I was 8 when this was filmed.
Shame on the politicians who in the 1950s and 60s got us into this neverending diesel nightmare! 😠
And still the civil servents think electrification is bad, that something is just around the corner to supercede it and we all won't need electricity ever again! Idiots, we should have carried on from the 1960s and got all the main, secondary & commuter routes wired/juiced leaving only the very fringes without some form of electric traction......
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Exactly! What also drives me insane is that when they finally had electrified the first mainline in the late 1960s everyone could literally see the difference! Classes 86 and 87 in the 1960s and 1970s immediatly outperformed everything that ever ran on diesel. In fact class 87 was in daily use until 2006 (!!) still happily running at a respectable 110mph. I mean English Electric had proven that they could build series of reliable and (relatively) fast electric locomotives. The solution was literally rolling in front of their very eyes!!! And what did they do? DEVELOP THE DIESEL POWERED HST WITH CLASS 43!!! 😡 Incredible till this very day! 😠😠 But There's good news, too. Electrification of the entire Western Mainline from London to Bristol has just been completed! I haven't given up hope entirely yet! 😂🤣
British rail at its best 1990 to 1994. Then j major broke the railway and I asked him why face to face. No reply coward
