  • Let's talk toys! In this video, we travel back to 1990 to spotlight the Playmates toy line for what was planned to be the biggest movie of the summer. Dick Tracy may not have been the smash hit that some were expecting, but it still had a huge impact on a young Heath. This one's dedicated to the action figures of our childhood and the fantastic summer of 1990!

    Dick Tracy 1990 is a great film. The atmosphere, settings, and overall vibe were perfect. It was also Madonnas best film.

    I remember as a kid there was something so appealing about Dick Tracy’s hat and coat being bright yellow. It’s hard to explain. But the movie was cool. I can’t believe Flat Top came with a noose. Wow!

      The movie used the four main color scheme used in comics. His bright yellow outfit is iconic!

    I loved the makeup in that movie. To this day there have been no fotos found of Warren Beatty with the nose makeup... Which in Theory he did try but didnt want to use since he said it looked unrealistic lol

    I was 11 when this movie was out.
    I was heavy into it. I bought the movie cards .
    I tried to get the figures.
    Only got Tracy, big boy , itchy , prune face , flattop, and the brow.

    OMG! nearly 30 years! Those old Dick Tracy figure were big, fun and chunky figures. I still have the cinema ticket from seeing the movie. Back then I used to collect all the tickets of films I saw at the cinema. haha XD Great that you still got your old childhood toys. Only a few of mine remain. Still trying to buy back some of the figures and toys I had.

    Yes, I had them all except for The Blank, and like you the figures were enough. I would have thought impertinent and excessive to ask for the vehicles. But last week I picked up Tracy's police car, new in the box, and this weekend I am completing my collection with Big Boy's Getaway Car, the watch and the 2 pack of wrist walkie talkies. When I found out what happened to The Blank, and how much money the character was going for, I gave up on owning it, but today, I am making my own custom of The Blank, based on the comics, a killer by the name of Frank Redrum. Thanks for the video!

    I had a lot of these figures as well. As you stated, some of these releases were regional or in short supply. I had everyone other than Sam, The Blank, Big Boy and Mumbles. I still remember the day I got my hands on Flattop. Life was good.

    You are so lucky to still have these. I had the whole series besides flat top and the blank but over the years I’ve lost them all. Occasionally I’ll find an arm or torso of one of the characters in an old toy bin at my parents but who knew I’d want to play with these again at age 34. I wish I’d taken care of them. 90s toys were the best!

    I had several of these, but it's not one of the few sets of toys I kept. I wish I did. I remember so wanting to get that Blank figure and never knew I didn't even have a chance. This brought back memories. Those cement shoes ... classic.

      I’m missing a lot of stuff that I can’t account for. I had the original Optimus Prime, but he’s nowhere to be found now, and I don’t know what happened to him. I had the 1989 Batman movie toy Batcave and the Super Powers Hall of Justice too. We didn’t sell them, they just vanished. So some of my toys have scattered into the wind too, unfortunately.

    I always loved the Looney Tunes short "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery" (1946) featuring Daffy Duck as Duck Twacy. The villains in it kinda freaked me out as a kid, lol
    There was a UPA Dick Tracy cartoon (produced in the 60's) as well.
    I remember liking the Dick Tracy movie more than the Batman movie.

    I forgot about these. I saw less of the figures around than packages of the watch, trading cards and other toys. Fun accessories, especially the cement shoes. The Blank would have been a cool mail order exclusive but they would have had to plan that out in advance. That way, by the time you received it there was less chance of a spoiler. Then again, given how the film performed at the box office I'm pretty sure they could have released it with the rest of the figures without much griping. Regarding the film, I like that even with all the makeup you can easily pick Henry Silva out.

    This takes me right back to 1990! DT was nearing the end of an era where movies (like Batman the year before) were filmed mostly on those elaborately built soundstages with matte painting backgrounds that just had a look CGI doesn’t. Amazing artistry that’s largely lost to time. I also remember being at Disney World that year and the Main Street in Hollywood Studios was all painted in primary colors to look like the movie. Swept up in the Dick Tracy fever, I bought a yellow fedora there and wore it all over the park and wanted that yellow trench coat real bad to go with it. 😂 And can we talk about the music? I could go on and on about this movie and do a whole commentary-I was so into it too. And also your toy collection is amazing! More toy vids from your collection would be fun in the future.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 лет назад +1

      This is incredible, Eric! You wore the hat through the park! Yes, I agree, the music was fantastic too. The duet between Mandy Patinkin and Madonna, "What Can You Lose," is one of my favorites. I have both the movie soundtrack and Madonna's "I'm Breathless" on CD somewhere. When we do a Dick Tracy commentary (and we WILL do a Dick Tracy commentary), I think you're the person to co-host it. What do you think?

    I was a poor college student when the movie came out, so wasn't collecting toys, but I was working part time at a movie theatre at the time so I not only saw the film several times, I saw bits and pieces of it almost every day during its initial release run. If you haven't checked them out, Max Alan Collins took over the Dick Tracy comic strip for a number of years (he might still be doing it, I'm not sure), and there are a number of collections (the Dick Tracy: Collins Casefiles) of those strips I recommend for fans of Dick Tracy, Max Alan Collins or both. I love the Gould originals, but the Collins stuff is a close second.

    there was a movie tie-in graphic novel called " big city blues" which is excellent with some fantastic artwork , it was the first of 3 graphic novels , the last being the movie adaption. "big city blues" is by far the highlight of the 3 books and well worth getting if you can find it . the odd thing , is that the books were pretty violent and not really suitable for the audience the movie was going for.

      Isn't that funny? A dollar made a big difference, and what kid could wait up to two months for a toy? Kids can't appreciate delayed gratification. Hey, I'm an adult, and I can hardly stand having to wait for something like that even now.

    Dick Tracy was a wonderful film, the only flaw being that the villains were killed off so they couldn't live to fight another day. The Playmates figures were too cartoony, not enough characters, the limited edition of The Blank, lack of trench coats, and no playsets. The line had so much potential. The accessories were very good.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  5 лет назад

      I do love them, and I also see them as interesting examples of a unique time in the toy industry. Bright and colorful, but also a little bit dark, thematically. Strange to see gangsters with machine guns, brass knuckles, rope, and knives marketed to children. They take things farther than G.I. Joe (both sixties and eighties versions) and even the Rambo toys.

    It's a shame that Dick Tracy wasn't a successful film. It was stylish and unique. It was impressive when it came to it's visuals and art direction. Warren Beatty and Madonna in particular, were solid in their respective roles. However, a major criticism was due to the fact that Warren Beatty was simply too old for the role. A bit of the story was sacrificed in favor of the movie's visuals. There was also a lack of emotion as well. Having said that, it's interesting to go back and look at these figures. Otherwise, thanks for great video. I really appreciate it!
