*Sizing Info*
According to a Brannock device, I have a men's 7.5 (US) normal width foot. I bought the 990v6 in size 7 Wide. So I went a half size down and increased the width. I think this is a good rule of thumb since this model runs long. For the Brooks, I could wear an 8 or 8.5 comfortably (both normal width).
To fix some nagging foot pain that's been creeping up on me over the past few years, I tested out a bunch of comfy shoe brands and models. This video is about two pairs that I ended up buying and wearing all the time. Both are very comfortable, and my feet feel a lot better now.

You've been been wearing too tight shoes causing your metatarsals to compress. Our feet need to spread out naturally.
My metatarsalgia was caused by brand new too tight shoes I used while traveling.
Broo get yourself a pair of RM William Comfort Craftsman.... you'll never wanna wear anything aside from them again...😭😊
Try the NB 2002R
Your best edited video yet. You're not just at your desk the whole time and it made it much more engaging. Great work here 👍
Thank you! Trying to get a bit more creative with the channel going forward 🤓
The Mephisto cutaways are gold @@BrockMcGoff
I can confirm! I have always suffered from back pain when I travel and walk a lot, and on my last trip to Argentina I walked a lot with the new balance 990v6 (I bought them exclusively for the trip) and I didn't experience back pain for the first time while traveling, I think it's because of the 990v6. They are super comfy and help to support the bounciness that hits the lower back when you walk.
Wow that’s awesome!
This man has so much swag he could wear a cardboard box and look amazing
I recently got new balance 990s, and trying them on felt like wearing shoes for the first time. Had the same revelation about never wanting to wear another pair of shoes again. I love rocking the lawn-mowing dad look because now I can walk all day without my feet hurting, it's great.
New Balance also has walking and hiking shoes that provide support, cushioning, and comfort.
Really enjoyed this video. Felt like a different vibe in terms of personality. Came over very well, good entertainment.
Thank you! I put way more time and energy into this one, so I'm glad it came through.
They do have more than a whiff of ‘dad shoes’ about them. But the older I get the more comfort appeals…
Same
strong whiff to me.
The 990s are a favorite of the sneakerhead community.
HOW MANY KIDS YA GOT?
Comfort is king!
Been wearing Adidas Ultraboost for 3 years now. I've had knee and lower back problems and my buddy told me it might be my shoes. Since I started wearing them and it fixed my knee and back issues within a week. They are super comfortable and light too.
I have that exact same pair/color of Brooks and every time I wear them, I appreciate them so much. Plus you're right that off-white color way is surprisingly quite fashionable.
The zero drop, wide toe box format resolved my foot and knee pain. It’s nicely explained by podiatrist Ray McClanahan at Northwest Foot and Ankle. I came to appreciate the aesthetics of Altras and Lems. Thanks for all you do, Brock.
I *just* got a pair of Lems and am testing them out. They definitely look a bit odd compared to standard shoes, but they felt great right out of the box!
The tone of vid is very different from the rest of your videos, in a good way! Loved the intro, great video!
Thank you! I wanted to try something more creative with this one. Really enjoyed making it, so I'm glad it came through. More to come!
Good to hear an honest opinion. I was leaning towards Hokas or the On Cloud but these sound more of what I need. Also, that jacket is awesome. nice fit.
Adidas Free Hikers are my go-to for comfort. Roomy toe box with Boost midsole and ankle support. They've been a Godsend for my feet, particularly on long walks with my very active dog.
Some shoes that are modern with good underfoot cushion are Kizik, Travis Mathew Cuater, Clarks Court Lite, Peter Millar Drift, and Cole Haan Grandpro Crew sneakers. All of them have varying levels of cushion but they're all well cushioned imo.
Good for you having fun with the drums. I picked up an acoustic guitar this Christmas and gave myself a year to see how far I go and, more importantly, to see if I enjoy it. Have to admit I’ve slacked off on learning, this month. Not calling it quits, just yet!
Keep it up!
Even the New Balance Numeric Skate shoes are amazing! Their fit and feel are amazing and comfortable and don't tire my feet by the end of the day.
Loved the new video style, Brock!
Thanks, glad you noticed!
In my mid 40s, I started getting this horrible pain in my right foot, the base of my big toe. Thinking this was probably from when I broke my foot in 2011. The days of wearing any sneaker was not an option anymore. Did the Sketchers BUT it had to have "Goga Mat" inside, those were ok, I'll wear the slip ons if I'm not going anywhere. I found a pair of Adidas "Alphabounce Beyond M" ..those still work well actually. I have a collection of Jordans 1,3,4, 6...but can't get through a 1/2 day with those anymore. I admit, I never even thought about owning NB's until 11 months ago. I found a pair of 992 gray and wow, unreal comfort! Then tried 2002r, they are ok. The newer 9060 are ok as well, not the greatest however (for me) in terms of pain. Then I also grabbed the 990v6 just like yours and these are my go to sneakers. I have never tried Brooks, but heard these are very comfortable also
I have been buying 990s for a long time but I had to return my 990 v6. They caused blister on my foot after about a week of regular walks of 4 miles. Luckily, New Balance has excellent customer service and they immediately sent be a return label. They said the new version does run little bit bigger and suggested one size down. So hopefully they will be better.
Glad to hear NB customer service took care of you!
My first time watching your content, Brock and I’m sold! That drum part at the end, being an edrummer myself is just the icing on the cake 👌
Thank you! This is my first e-kit (TD27kv2) and I'm loving it so far. What do you play?
@@BrockMcGoff now I have the Alesis Nitro. I started with a Chinese brand , Soundking but the channels started failing one at a time within a year🤣
I just got a pair tonight, LOVE them.
Sweet, enjoy them!
Millennial here, comfort is the name of the game lol these 990v6 are amazing! 10/10 highly recommend
I usually wear Red Wing 1907s but it is time for a resole so went sneaker shopping and landed on New Balance 993. Perfect for my wide feet.
Loved the music bit at the end! But you HAVE to link that navy top you're wearing. It looks gorgeous!
I have unusually shaped feet and most shoes are too slim for me.
New Balance came onto my radar because they are the one brand that offers different widths, they have a reputation for being comfortable and I like their aesthetic.
And as a 40 year old with 2 young kids, the dad aesthetic is where I live but I don't want to give up on style!
Brock, you're the only style person I follow so this video came along at just the right time!
Never change, brother. This video is super informative and hilarious.
Miss you 😘
Miss you too, brother.
Have you tried the NB 574s? They’re one of my faves. They’re supportive without being too chunky.
Yes! I have a pair. I like the look a lot, but honestly, they're nowhere near the 990s in terms of comfort, at least for my feet.
574s are more generic in a way that... 990s are a modern, streetwear-ready dad-core style, and 574s feel like the kinds of shoes your actual dad would wear.
But yeah, 990s are more comfortable and kind of just better.
I like the way you stylized this video. Good work.
I appreciate that!
Great video. You cannot go wrong with anything from the NB 990 made in usa series.
I have the same foot problem. I feel the pain of not being able to wear the boots anymore. I found the red wing 1907 can accomodate an insert quite well and have been able to wear them that way with no more foot pain
Anecdotally I experienced the opposite. I switched to new balance because of my foot pain, but it slowly just made the underlying problem worse, which was lack of foot strength and mobility.
People’s feet are weak because they’re always in a supportive shoe, then they have to keep increasing the support as their feet get weaker and weaker. the real fix is gradually removing support
I also suggest you ASICS Quantum 360. I been wearing 180 version last 2 years. it still comfortable shoe as new. Would also love to see how do we style these kind of sneakers?
I liked the style of this video. I too had a lot of foot problems from wearing overly flat soled shoes, my feet would even bleed in Adidas shelltoe shoes in the 90s. I had to abandon coolness in favour of comfort and found new balance 15 years ago. Now theyre so trendy im having trouble buying them online! Luckily the uk outlet has a few pairs in my size in stock (full price theyve really increased a lot). I find them more supportive than other shoes and most importantly they dont tend to hurt my ankles and heels.
My NB 2002r’s are easily my favorite pair of sneakers ever.
Ecco, you gotta try Ecco. Lots of models, so try and buy. Biom Fjuel is my favorite rn.
for your boots, ask you podiatrist for a custom 3/4 insole (unlined). They will but just a piece of clearish plastic and won’t mess with your toe room. I used em for both my allen edmond boots and
I wear a lot of boots because I am a commercial contractor. One cheap comfortable boot is Brazos moc toe from Academy Sports. I have much more expensive boots but these are the most comfortable. I took it the cheap insoles and put in mine.
Thanks for your great videos.
Really enjoyed this one Brock 😎
Very informative video Brock, thank you! I am someone who has very little/almost no arch - can I still wear the ones you showed? TIA :)
Thanks! Yeah, I think the 990 line is good for low/no arch too, but you should visit a running/orthotic shoe store and get some expert advice!
The SAME thing happened to my husband. One day great- the next day terrible stabbing PAIN in his foot. He tried them ALL & 'Sketchers Arch Support Shine' are the best he's found! Said they're way more comfortable than the NB 990. Also- put CASTOR OIL on it every night! It works miracles (also on KNEES if you were ever a runner)!
great video man, those pants look great. NB 990s are very good, I have a pair of 990v4s and like them a lot.
Thanks! I want to try the other versions too. Heard the v4s are great!
Ever since I hit my late 40s, my feet and back started to hurt more. Come to realize that I needed better shoes. My older buddy recommended New Balance sneakers. "Dad shoes?" I joked. But he convinced me to try them out. I first bought 880v12. Then 1080v12. And before you know it, yes, I became a fan! And more importantly, my feet and back don't hurt as much anymore. 🙏
I'm looking forward to your comfort+stylish discovery! Great job, as always, Brock. And I don't think I knew you were a drummer!
Thanks, Scott! Yeah, I grew up playing piano and drums. Just getting back into it after a long hiatus. Do you play anything?
@@BrockMcGoff ah, I love piano too. Maybe you'll showcase that ability in an upcoming video? 🥰
If you find something slightly more dressy and slightly less chunky, but still as comfortable as New Balance, please let us know! I have exactly the same problems you described. Glad it’s not just me.
Great video Brock. This is kinda funny and timely because I've been thinking of writing this comment to you for a while now! When I watch some of your older videos, I notice that some of the style "mistakes" mentioned are wearing running shoes, even though you're not running. I can agree, but I went thru the exact same issues you describe here. I used to love wearing minimalist sneakers (Vans, Common Projects, et) but as I got older, my feet just could not tolerate them ( I was an avid skateboarder and basketball player for years, my feet took a beating). After so many years of resistance, I finally gave in to some Nike running shoes. The Revolution 7 work well for me and the Vans ultrarange also work well. I'm actually okay with it now and feel as though I've incorporated it into my style with confidence. But I sometimes picture you evaluating my outfit as I walk down the street, as if your saying "nice fit but those running shoes are ruining it". I"m like "I know, but my feet can't take the stylish shoes!" Lol. So it was really cool to see this! Goes to show that many different types of shoes and clothing can work if worn with confidence, and our style always evolves. Thanks for all the entertaining and useful vids!
We're on the same journey, my friend 😅
I was probably too prescriptive in my earlier videos. But either way, I've come to the same realization you have re: comfort trumping style (not that you can't have both).
No judgement from me haha! And I'm going to check out those shoes you mentioned...
Blundstone 585 Chelsea boots are what I wear everyday. For boots, they are amazingly comfortable.
Ahh, what a timely video as I just placed in an order of the New Balance 990v5 in Castlerock/Grey. I know I need a shoe that’s not super squishy and more on the stability side.
Great choice! I want to try the v5 at some point. Love the castlerock/grey color 👍🏼
B gots jokes! (I already knew this, however) More of these style vids! Also digging those lestrange pieces
Have you tried LESTRANGE? I think you'd be into them.
Thx homie
great Video, as a suggestyfor comfortable shoes i've been wearing nothing but Cole Haan for years now. Nike owns the company so there is sneaker technology and the have a wide selection from formal to sneakers and even flip flops. I think it would be great if you did a video about Cole Haan shoes
I've been on the same journey the past six or so months, which also started with NB, but my favorite has been the Asics Gel-1130. The special release versions are a step up style-wise, but just as comfortable as any NB I've tried.
How's the width and toe box volume compare to NB?
@@BrockMcGoff Missed this -- about the same width and volume, however, I have not tried the 990s. I wear the 880 v13 for running and have worn some of the classic styles, like the 574, in the past. But man, it's really hard to go back to more minimalist shoes once you go down this road. My knees and hips thank me. I even tried on my old Killshots the other day and the comfort was just not there. If you're not familiar with his channel, @SeanGo does really great sneaker reviews. Cheers. I've appreciated your videos for many years now.
I really like the 2002Rs but you've convinced me to give the 990s a try!
I want to try those too but haven't been able to yet. Are they true to size for you?
Hands down my most comfortable sneakers have been the new balance 1080 v13 and the ASICS gel nimbus 25. I even got my mom a pair and she loves them.
Do the Gel Nimbus 25s run narrow? I was concerned about the width.
@@BrockMcGoff most people say get half a size bigger but it fits true to size for me with room in the toe box at a US 8. They do offer a wide version as well if you are concerned.
I just got a brand new pair of New Balance 990v3s and a pair of On Cloudnovas and man the Cloudnovas are superior in comfort. I wanted the New Balance to be as comfy and supportive but the Ons just blow them away. I find myself wanting to wear the Cloudnovas daily. It’s one of On’s lifestyle shoes and not made for running, just walking and everyday use. I highly recommend. Seriously give them a try. Cheers!
Was that the Roland TD-27kv2? It sounded great. Also, your playing was very clean, you should make a drumming channel :))
Can you please share the link for the Navi jacket brand at 3:16? Thank you!
Would love different outfits videos with these shoes. Feel like these would be great for a minimalist
You should try the Saucony Shadow XT 600!! Similar realm as the NB 990v6 (stylish Dad shoes/80-90s running shoes). They offer this model is so many color ways and premium materials. Truly amazing and comfortable.
I'll check it out!
I do agree that the New balance shoes are very comfortable but being in my sixties and also a dad I hate the idea of wearing a “dad shoe” so I have been leaning more towards getting the New Balance 272 which has a sleeker profile preferably in white to go for the minimal white design. Trying to look cool in your sixties and still choose comfort is my aim.
i have it too but the air monarch 4 extra wide is the most comfortable for me
This is really interesting because I'm in somewhat of a similar predicament with a mild case of plantar fasciitis. The solution seems to be comfortable footwear and exercise while the feet heal and get stronger. Do you still work out?
Yeah I’ve never really stopped working out (always some combo of lifting and BJJ), although I haven’t done much running or jump rope in a while. I hope you find a solution!
Where's the black/navy overshirt you are wearing in the video from? It looks really nice!
It's from ASKET
you should try thursday primer low sneakrs as well as blundstone boots, they are pretty comfortable for sneakrs for me, as someone who has flat feet.
a
Hey Brock, will definitely check out Lestrange. I’ve had issues with my feet as well. The ASICS Nimbus are very comfortable but I just discovered the On Cloud 5. Went to Europe and wore them everyday. And logged about 20,000 steps each day. I’ve never worn anything so comfortable. I wear them 5-6 days a week.
Nimbus 24s were stellar! New ones are great too but hate the stack height. I have wide feet so on cloud are a joke. Love the 990s ..just wish new balance would take that N off the side.
@@Lilnewtynewt completely agree with the branding of the new balance.
Most comfortable shoes I've worn thus far (and I'm not a hypebeast) are the Yeezy Boost 700 V2, 350 V2, and Nike ZoomX Invincible.
I may be double-posting but, correction on my recommendation either way, you must try the New Balance 9060 (not 9080 lol.) if you haven’t try them at the store at least bc the comfort is something you won’t forget! Loved the style of vid.
I cant afford this 990s, any recommended shoes that is a bit cheaper to this?
I would love to see you address stylish shoes of all types for narrow feet.
Just got a pair of 880s... I really like them. I also wear Asics Nimbus and Cumulus. I find the to be hit and miss from year to year....
I've heard good things about Asics Nimbus, but I've also heard that they run narrow. Thoughts?
Cool video style!
Thanks!
Something about the suede on the 990’s that makes them more versatile than the Nike Monarch.
These walk the tightrope between dad shoe and trendy lifestyle. These will age like wine
I would be interested in seeing your thoughts on some pairs of Birkenstock’s shoes.
I had a pair of Arizonas years ago (with heel strap) that I found very comfortable, but the second pair I purchased hasn't worked out. I think the bumps under the toe (the little ridge that's built in) doesn't quite line up with right for my feet.
Do you like them?
Ultraboosts, 990’s, brooks, Hoka, are all very very comfy but the 990 is very quality. Hell I find Air Max 90’s and ASICS Gel Lyte 3’s extremely comfy.
Have you tried All Birds Tree Runners? Really comfy.
I haven't but will check them out.
There so many comfortable shoes especially max cushion shoes. My favorite are nike invicible, hoka bondi, oncloud monster, addidas ultraboost, addidas 4frwd. I think they are more comfortable than NB 990.
Please do review some new balance 2002r....
try Asics 1130, its more comfortable than the NB 990s and more affordable too
For boots the Lems Boulder Boots are super comfortable
I've been sticking with common projects for so many years, until I jumped on the New Balance hype train last year. Also been experimenting with more Y2K runners like the Nike Vomero 5s. I don't think I can go back to the minimalist shoe trend unless it's for smart casual purposes. While minimalist white sneakers look great, it just becomes too safe and boring.
Hey Brock, not sure how long it will last but the 990's and Asics Gel lytes are huge in Nyc right now
Makes sense given how many miles NYC people are walking everyday!
@@BrockMcGoff Indeed
One of the best shoes for my gouty ankles🤣
I use to do moving for a living I bought a couple pairs of these new balance as they were on sale. I assumed they were some generic brand. It took me more than 3 years to wear out both pairs. Now I cant find them in my area. 8* (
Glad they lasted that long!
I would recommend Asics. They are on par with New Balance.
Which model do you like?
@@BrockMcGoff The Asics GT-1000 10 (discontinued model) is my daily pair of shoes these days. They are comfortable and roomy. My feet never hurt from the very first wear. The midsole may feel a little bit harder compared to other shoes but it just takes time getting used to. Other models like Gel-Lyte III and GT-2160 are comfortable too but so far my pick will be the GT-1000 model.
I work in a hospital and most of the staff wear Brooks and Hokas. I have pairs of both and find my Hokas to be the most comfortable.

What pants were you wearing @ 4:35? Thank you
Hylete Flexion joggers
L’Estrange are absolute top tier. WELL worth the price tag. Unlike anything from New Balance, will be wearing the 24’s a lot.
I agree they're nice pants. Funnily, if you look on LESTRANGE's site, many of their models are wearing New Balances (mostly made-in-UK collection, for obvious reasons).
@@BrockMcGoff I just can’t do it…..
Try the new balance Tiago 1010
I've ended up in the same boat. Seems like heritage boots were a bad idea afterall. The boot ends up outlasting the health of your feet.
I would also recommend trying barefoot shoes to build strength in your feet, shoes with thick soles and arch support merely just mask the problem by providing support
I wore New Balance Minimus a lot for a couple years, but I kind of think they made my foot problems worse. Indoors, if I wear a thin (barefoot style) house slipper, my feet start hurting pretty quickly.
Might be an individual thing, or I might have to do some rehab/strengthening.
@@BrockMcGoff sorry to hear that. The New Balances will work well for rehabbing if you’re on your feet a lot. There are some good exercise videos available on RUclips that you might like to try too. If you want to try barefoot shoes after that I would try to transition slowly, start with around the house, then a short walk, and then for longer periods until you’re hopefully pain free.
you need cushioning and low drop shoes. That's what worked for me.
Does New Balance have anything that is comfortable but doesn’t look like dad shoe
Birkenstock Kyotos are comfy af
Those are on my list to try. I just they made versions without the build-it toe bar/molding.
I wish these things didn't look so dorky on me. I've seen plenty of people pull them off but I am just gonna look trash in these. Which is a shame because this is the first time a show that is in (or any popular stylish shoe) actually comes in wide width which I need. I have mostly running and barefoot shoes but those cannily be worn with athleisure wear.
Heh, Metatarsalgia.. I know what u feel. U can imagine how i loved different types of shoes and now i'm forced to buy only shoes which doesn't hurt my metatarsals.. i'm 39 years old now and my Metatarsalgia symptoms started around 6 years ago. With special feet exercises i recovered my feet but still i can't wear all kind of shoes, especially those with heel and little cushion in front of feet.
I'm feeling the same way! What kind of exercises did you do? If you can link to any videos/routines, that would be helpful 🙏🏻
@cGoff There are many exercises which are waste of time. There are two of them which really recover transverse arch. here number one. You must make this exercise every morning around 3-4 month. 50 shrink 2-3 set. after 3-4 month, when ur feet and transverse arch get stronger, u can do this only 2-3 times in week. ruclips.net/video/BbP-UMa-oSA/видео.html
@@BrockMcGoff In video there is used some ball but u don't need ball, u can just sit on chair and do shrinks 30-50 shrinks 2-3 set.
@@BrockMcGoff Second best exercise is calves workout. you can google how to exercise calves. 30-50 reps and 1-2 set is enough every morning.
@@BrockMcGoff I recommend to see on youtube videos about Metatarsalgia, just to know what it is and what kind of deformities causes it.
Gonna have to change the tag line to "until next time, stay comfortable"
Truth 😂
990s are the GOATs
What is your take on Mephisto? I actually have several dozen pairs of Mephisto shoes, and I was definitely surprised to see them referenced...seems like nobody ever talks about them, but that must not be the case if they're popular enough for you to have mentioned them in a video about a different brand.
I've never tried them, but when I lived in DC, I remember seeing multiple Mephisto stores, so they must be pretty popular. I know they're a comfort focused brand, sort of like a higher end Rockport or Cole Haan. From what I can tell, their designs aren't always great (hence my joking about them in this video). But function over form! Seems like you like the brand?
@@BrockMcGoff They've got some pretty ugly old designs, but I think their newer designs are pretty stylish-especially for folks like myself who aren't into the whole "urban streetwear" or "athleisure" aesthetic. They use either full-grain leather, nubuck, or suede in practically all their shoes, and to my knowledge, all of their shoes are resoleable and refurbishable (though it is a pretty expensive service). Their MSRPs are ridiculously high, but I can buy them barely used off eBay for usually less than US$100, so I think they're a good deal to get something comfortable, high-quality, and (depending on the design) stylish. I just counted, and I have 33 pairs of Mephistos, with another pair on the way. I definitely need to stop because I don't even go outside all that often. 😅
When I don't care about looking taller, the Birchbury Bramford is my go-to shoe to offer a comfortable "barefoot shoe" experience. I've actually got six pairs in different colors and sizes (for thin versus thick socks).
@@BrockMcGoff Would love to see you try it. Its hard to find a good review on them.
On clouds are a good comfortable shoe to try if you haven’t already
I’ve heard good things but haven’t tried them yet!
@@BrockMcGoffI’d definitely check them out, I work at a running shoe store and On’s out outlet best seller and if you’re able to try em especially the monsters or the surfers those are the best cushioned ones
