see this is the issue with the news nowadays they are talking about something they don't understand at all i own a landscape co and a snow and ice management co out of the lower part of NY State so I'm going to break down some prices for everyone and if your from this news channel I suggest you listen. -price of truck new $60,000 - $80,000 used $15,000 to $30,000 -insurance cost $$6,000 - $50,000 per year for just snow depending on your coverage -price of fuel per gallon $2- $4 per gallon with a 30+ gallon tank + filling constantly due to trucks always running thru the storm that adds up quick -plow $4,000 - $9,000 -man power on average $15 - $20 per hour plus once they hit 8 hours with out stopping overtime sets in -salt and other ice melt materials $30 per yard - workers comp $20,000 per year -value loss per season on truck due to it being used for plowing est $4,000 - $6,000 per season - shovels $20 each -extra parts for plows and trucks too much $$$$$ to even think about spending a simple nut and bolt on these plows run you $5 add all that together than add the time it takes to prep for the storm the time it takes to bill the time it takes to chase down customers that don't pay driving time to and from houses on and on and on so the point here is the contractor ends up paying alot of money to simply plot a driveway then add a event like nemo where we got alot of snow really fast and the lovely news goes you shouldn't pay more the $50 to plow your driveway and guess who gets screwed us the contractors. We are plowing drive ways for $100 a pop and after everything is added up we are only making $10 - $20 for that drive way.
LOL Someone likes bitching about business expenses. Bottom line is you built a huge money pit. Not a business. If you cant handle the heat get out of the damn kitchen.
ben kors there's a difference between bitching about business expenses and people who are uneducated about the field of work they are discussing telling people how much to pay based off what companies who want to work for free this upsets me because there was a lot of time wasted after winter storm memo dealing with people who saw a thing on the news like this. The news said you shouldn't pay more than $50 to have your driveway plowed the average driveway around me is 200-500+ yards long add the several feet of snow there's no way I would ever plow for that much so we end up getting burned this is the stuff people don't get and these type broadcast really screw with the industry
50$ is on tyhe cheap side. when i was in NY living. most plow ppl did 75$ to 150$. now and then see some companies charge lower pricing for Older seniors ppl usally around $40 but its cause they want to do that. some will even do discounts for long term customers or even now and then do some driveways free of charge for fire stations and police stations
That's certainly a good point and possibility. Many operators don't run a tight ship or keep tight controls on expenses. I operated my truck(s) for 20+ years. Being an engineer, I kept close watch on _every_ expense that had an impact on profit. After new regulations and law changes about commercial plowing in my State took away another 31% of my margin, we entered into the $4/gal gas winter..that was it for me. I finally tapped-out. Sold the trucks and equipment and referred all my accounts to others.
$50??? It won't cover my gas and time going to and back from your driveway LOL! You know what you can do for $50? Buy yourself a shovel, dress up warmly, and get your lazy arss out there and shovel it!
In a storm I will always charge more. I've gotten $150 for a one time plow on a double wide driveway that was just over 2 car lengths long. It's supply and demand. If I've been out of 20+ hrs I'm going to charge a whole lot more
@@BradlyTheRadly that's called capitalism silly liberal, supply and demand.basic economics. I know, he is a greedy evil corporation that has bottomless pockets . Gtfoh.
We got 18” last week, I declined all emergency calls. They couldn’t pay me enough to risk damaging my truck and not being able to take care of my regular customers because of their lack of planning and preparation. After getting some rest I did snowblow a few for $100 each, and still managed to kill a driveshaft so I made $0. That just says I have the right approach.
I plow my own with my ATV, and get questions of doing other driveways for neighbors, around here it's $20 and I will do it, but my schedule has prevented it from happening this year. Only have time to do my own.
I used to plow when is lived in NY. Had a few clients who called me every winter. They paid a decent amount for their driveways because of the grade, length, and drive there. One guy would pay $150 for me to clear his driveway because no one else wanted to do it. Had a sharp curve down hill with a pond at the curve.
I live outside Buffalo NY. An average driveway (single width, 4 cars deep) usually runs $30 per plow still in 2021, and people still bitch that they are getting ripped off at that price. I don't know how these guys make any money. Most of these guys have $50-80k trucks with $6-12k plows attached to them.
This reporter totally mis-summarized the pricing given in the interview. She never said $50 was average. She said the average sized driveway STARTS at 50. There are many other factors : size of YOUR driveway, snow depth, steepness, de-icing, etc... So to sum up the report by saying move on if the price is over $50 is bad reporting. Btw...$50 for a driveway is not absurd depending on where you live.. (in Chicago its peanuts) it may even be low if you include the factors already mentioned.
Here in Montreal I charge a fixed price of 460$ - 560$ for 4 months starting on December 1st, with snow being cleared at 2 inches without any salting. This is for single driveway and walkway of no more than 200 sq feet. works pretty well when you develop a route and system.
Im in Clevekand and I'm a guy with a snowblower trying to make some side money. I've been charging $30 for a double wide driveway and sidewalk. I feel it's too cheap given my travel time. Should I try raising it to $35? My last potential customer said he found someone that would do it for $20. I guess you need to know when today no.
i live north of Syracuse ny where we measure our snow in feet not inches. if someone dont want to pay enough money for plowing then i tell them to buy their own plow and truck and destroy it for someone else for 20 dollers. after you do the math your much better off to just pay someone a fair rate
That's for a standard sized driveway. If I called someone to come do my 1/2 a mile driveway, $50 is too little for that big of a job. $150-$200 would be fair for a big driveway like mine.
Ramon Tello I live in Thornhill Ontario and I'm an owner operator ( residential snow removal service ) and I do top quality service When I Plow on demand I get paid 50 or 60 $$ they gladly pay me for normal 2 car driveway specially when it's heavy wet snow , Proper PLOW EQUIPMENT IS VERY EXPENSIVE , if they don't want to pay I won't do it Thank you very much
65 minimum. A visit is required every six inches in deep snow. Grab a shovel at lowes if you don’t want to pay . Plowers unite in fair prices. Equipment isn’t cheap
I love not dealing with homeowners to be honest parking lots have treated me well I do not regret taking driveways out of the picture. I don’t want to plow you out 3 times because the city keeps fucking up my work. You have to pay for that too.
$50 for a drive way is for someone who just has a plow people don't realize that landscaping company have insurance and trained /experienced driver it adds up don't be stingy if they come to plow ever snow storm. even on 3/4 and 1 ton truck plows wear the truck down evertime you plow
*Massachusetts*. You'll get $50 for that driveway all day long up here. The state gouges you for commerical plates, inspections and insurance up here. I got rid of all my trucks because of the expenses I had every year. It was really hard to turn a profit, keep the trucks going and keep my home lights and heat on. With almost every customer complaining about pricing, you finally just say _"Why am I doing this?"_. I'd rather plow for $25-$35 a driveway and not have to deal with all the yearly State nonsense/expense. An enterprising kid with a decent snowblower cold make $100/hr if kids (and their parents) would wake-up and teach them the value of work and money. The state hasn't figured out how to take punitive action against kids turning a buck..yet.
it's worth as much as you are willing to pay, there is no such thing as a fair price.
I love when people that know nothing about business talk about business.
see this is the issue with the news nowadays they are talking about something they don't understand at all i own a landscape co and a snow and ice management co out of the lower part of NY State so I'm going to break down some prices for everyone and if your from this news channel I suggest you listen.
-price of truck new $60,000 - $80,000 used $15,000 to $30,000
-insurance cost $$6,000 - $50,000 per year for just snow depending on your coverage
-price of fuel per gallon $2- $4 per gallon with a 30+ gallon tank + filling constantly due to trucks always running thru the storm that adds up quick
-plow $4,000 - $9,000
-man power on average $15 - $20 per hour plus once they hit 8 hours with out stopping overtime sets in
-salt and other ice melt materials $30 per yard
- workers comp $20,000 per year
-value loss per season on truck due to it being used for plowing est $4,000 - $6,000 per season
- shovels $20 each
-extra parts for plows and trucks too much $$$$$ to even think about spending a simple nut and bolt on these plows run you $5
add all that together than add the time it takes to prep for the storm the time it takes to bill the time it takes to chase down customers that don't pay driving time to and from houses on and on and on
so the point here is the contractor ends up paying alot of money to simply plot a driveway then add a event like nemo where we got alot of snow really fast and the lovely news goes you shouldn't pay more the $50 to plow your driveway and guess who gets screwed us the contractors. You guys have no idea what you are talking about...
Nice when people like the news have no idea of the subject they talk about tell others how much they should pay
$12 -15 dollars per parking spot...you have a 2 wide and say 8 car length driveway your talking around $200-250 each visit...nobody is coming for $50.

$50 maximum? where is the logic behind that? $50 is the minimum and that is still low balling it.
What a total joke.
oh my god people around where i live complain about paying 35.00.and your saying 50 is cheap.
Right!?! Up here in erie, "Joe blows" un-insured with a plow have driven the prices down so far that it's getting hard to make money around here
i hear that.
bryan tremmel we have high taxes in Connecticut. Need to make up for the business tax. $50 is average for an average driveway.
oh okay gotcha
bryan tremmel yeah.
Lol. People
Yeah where the frick is $50 cheap for a drive??? If you ask for more than 30-35 for that drive they're calling someone else
paul rogers Connecticut. We have high taxes. Need to make up the money to pay business tax plus all your other expenses.

50 bucks to plow a driveway? where the hell are you plowing thats crazy
gotta consider the maintenance on the equip, time and fuel
50 is cheap, ive been plowing for years and the costs between truck repairs and maintenance, labor, fuel costs, this really is a super fair price
Thats why I would strongly recommend commercial plowing, snow no snow you still get paid, resediantal properties is a joke.
