Once upon a time, in a faraway village, there lived a kind-hearted old man and his gentle wife. Their greatest joy was tending to their beautiful garden filled with flowers, accompanied by their loyal dog, Shiro.
However, their neighbors were not good people. They were greedy, jealous, and rude. Whenever the kind old man helped someone, the wicked neighbors envied him and always wanted more for themselves.
One day, their faithful dog Shiro started barking excitedly in a corner of the garden. The old man quickly went to him. “What is it, Shiro?” he asked. Shiro was digging the ground with his paws. The old man became curious and started digging as well. Suddenly, a huge chest emerged from the soil! Inside the chest were gold coins, jewels, and sparkling treasures!
The old man and his wife were overjoyed and began helping the poor people in the village. But soon, the greedy neighbors heard about it. They wanted to borrow Shiro as well.
The next day, the greedy neighbors took Shiro to their own garden. “Come on, find gold for us too!” they ordered, forcing the dog to dig. But this time, instead of treasure, Shiro uncovered foul-smelling stones, mud, and dry leaves. The neighbors were furious and treated poor Shiro badly before driving him away. Shiro ran back to his rightful owner.
Hearing this, the old man felt very sad, but he still did not get angry at his neighbors.
A while later, Shiro started barking again in the garden. This time, the old man discovered an old mortar beneath the soil. He and his wife decided to try pounding rice with it. To their amazement, as they pounded, shiny rice and delicious food appeared!
When the greedy neighbors heard about this, they demanded to borrow the mortar. But when they pounded the rice with greed, only mud and foul smells came out! In anger, they broke the mortar.
The old man and his wife were saddened, but they gathered the broken pieces and buried them in their garden. That night, something magical happened! When they woke up in the morning, a magnificent cherry blossom tree had grown in their garden. And every blossom that fell to the ground instantly turned into gold!
The villagers admired the old man’s kindness and generosity. But the greedy neighbors realized too late that their greed had left them with nothing. From that day forward, everyone in the village learned that kindness, patience, and sharing were the greatest treasures of all.
And the old man continued to make flowers bloom…
