I know we’ve never met Marianne and we probably never will but I’m so proud of you for doing this so publicly on this channel it’s hard enough to learn a new skill and to do it with a camera pointed at you is a brave thing well done you!😊😊
As a professional seaman and a powerboat instructor and yacht master it’s so good to see finally someone saying how important it is to have training to go on the water. Too many people buy cheap boats and go out and cause chaos! Great video! “Steer before gear” 😉
It’s incomprehensible to me that someone would even think about operating a boat without training, seems far more complicated than driving a car, and you wouldn’t be allowed to drive a car without a licence.
“Steer before gear” is my mantra too. One useful reminder is “it’s not a car”. That reinforces the message that it doesn’t have four wheels to grip the road and no handbrake or foot brake. It’s so easy to see a throttle and a wheel and “assume” that it will react the same way. Even if you’re sat alongside someone truly you won’t pick it up without time on the wheel as the sensation of how the vessel reacts to “your - helms” input can only be felt from actually driving. Great work from the instructor. It must be warmer in the south west than in the Solent. I’m dressed up like a spaceman in sub zero windchill at present. Roll on warmer days.
I found this channel earlier this year and loved watching this series in full - so much so that this weekend, I took the PB2 course myself and had a great time doing so. Thank you both for this introduction to boating; you're inspiring many people to become boaters!
She already has some experience driving a boat, and still had a lot of questions and probably learned a lot. Imagine a person that has never driven a boat and decided they wanted one. Courses like this are great for everyone. Well done Marianne.
As a seafarer (firmly ashore these days though) it’s fantastic to see a channel like this promote good training. It’s so dangerous to put out to sea without any yet many do each year costing millions in rescue resources. ...I hadn’t realised how triggered I was by people saying reverse in a boat though. 🤦🏻♂️😂😂
Well done Marianne . I did love that she asked almost exactly the questions I would have asked , obviously you have to edit your footage down but I am probably not the only one that could have happily watched the entire thing raw warts an all as it were lol . Love to ya both .
Wonderful Nick. Very interesting. Reminds me when I did mine about 25 years ago. I did mine as part of scout leadership training with Kingskerswell scouts. We were blessed by a Kingskerswell resident who left the group a lovely little speed boat. Well done Marianne 👍
Learning to drive a single screw or single outboard boat is a good way to learn. Then you get in a twin screw boat and realise how much easier it is to manoeuvre when you have 2 engines to play with. Good on you Marianne!
We’re going to have Marianne do a level 2 boating course. (Marianne raises eyebrows) Here are the parts of the boat. (Marianne raises eyebrows) Now gently manoeuvre to the dock (Marianne raises eyebrows) I’m glad no one created a drinking game based on this fun and happy video. We’d all be sloshed! Marianne is one cool cat; total grace under pressure. Rock on! Hey y’all should (once restrictions are eased) do a journey on all the canals here in Belgium. Or do a trip down the Mosel in France/Germany. Make it happen, Cap’n Marianne!!!
Hi Nick and Marianne. Congratulations on passing your PB level 2. Even though no certificate is needed in the UK the experience gained using the boat at low speeds with and against wind and tide is crucial. Well done. Great video thanks 😊 👍
Congratulations👏 and well done Marianne!👍 Nice Vlog that can give confidence to more ladies (and men) to go do this themselves as well! I believe all people that operate a boat should have to go through this. Too many people believe that because they can operate a car (no matter how poorly they do that as well) that they can operate a boat because it has a steering wheel and a forward/reverse lever basically like a car. They have no conception of water current effects on the boat at slow speeds trying to park it and maneuver around other boats/docks, who has the "right of way" out on the water or what different bouys and markers stand for, and the major differences in turning, handling, and most importantly stopping distance of a boat vs car, or how waves and boat wake can affect steering/handling and can cause a boat to crash and sink! She did this properly with a professional and didn't just rely on the time she's had in a boat with your experience and knowledge alongside her to give her a feeling of knowing what she's doing! Keep going all the way to getting a Captains license!!
Awesome job Marianne! I grew up on boats so never realised how much learning is involved. I then got my English wife on a rental cruiser in the Frisian Lakes to 'take control' and it didn't go well, she didn't make any mistakes, but panicked a lot, it made me realise how much is actually involved with things like mooring and so on. We took a course and it was worth every penny. These days I'd rather have her in charge with docking etc!
Currently boating out in the Solent and it is actually sunny! Unfortunately not much wind today but will apparently pick up tomorrow. Well done Marianne!
Please stop it, you're making me jealous ☺. Apart from being in my Tinker on Windermere I haven't been at sea since Oct 2019 (🛥 in Wales) and I need 4 new trailer tyres before I can get it back afloat :-(
Thanks for the tutorial, really enjoyed it. Love this channel. oh and please tell Marianne, loving the natural look. She gave me the courage to get my license, well done everyone.
Nice video. The main difference between driving a car and a boat I learned (I have quite a reactive sporty car) is the lag bit on the boat, so you just have to keep it a tad calmer and not be yanking at the wheel and the throttle like a maniac and just take your time. But that is why I like boating so much, it just makes you slow down and enjoy the activity whether you want it or not :-)
disagree , there are 2 factors really dangerous , wind and sea current , and also hidden rocks. In sardinia where i used to boat 10% of boats had hull or propellers damages each season
Huge congratulations to Marianne ! Thank you both for showing us some of the required training needed to own a yacht. I was hoping you would cover this topic. As with learning to drive or fly, there is so much you need to know before you can be let loose. I know you also need to learn maritime radio as well. Marianne did brilliantly, and it is great you can share your yachting passion now!
Congratulations Marianne. Very worthwhile course regardless of how long you've been on the water. Did mine last year,it's helped with my mooring technique no end.
She's is a brave girl letting you film that Nick. Nerves of steel all "Props" Marianne. The world need more female captains xx. RYA Day Skipper next Marianne?

@5.55, Why am I going sideways? So perfectly put, a question many of us have asked on the way back from the pub, What a sport Marianne is, she is fun and a great student. Nick is a very lucky man. Of course Marianne is too.
That was brilliant, any more of these Nick? Your videos showing your trips out in Smugglers Blues 2 make it all look so easy, watching Marianne being put through her paces brings it all home it's takes time, patience and practice to hone the skills. Well done Marianne for the bravery of putting yourself in the spotlight.
Next time Nick pops down to the marina & wonders where SB2 has disappeared to, only to see Marianne giving it the full beans heading out of Torquay harbour! 😂
I remember when I first did my course with the RYA, it was brilliant I learned so much from so little time. But don't forget marianne practice make perfect, you were brilliant for a novice.
I’ve done this via the sea cadets and it was good fun and the second day and RIBs we used in Plymouth were amazing And I’m 14 with that qualification Doing well Well done Marianne

Driving an outboard power boat and driving a shaft drive boat are two totally different animals. Nick you are going to have to let Marianne drive yours and try to do the same maneuvers of docking etc. One safety tip/rule I failed was actually about right of way . The question was:- if I see a boat approaching on my left ( on a collision course )and doesn't look like it is going to give way , what do I do? I answered - slow down and let them go past. The correct answer was turn to the right , that way the boat which was on my left becomes the overtaking boat and still must give way. I didn't fail my boat license but it is something I have remembered my whole boating life.
Boyce, you know you want to. My course was a great team builder, still in contact with couple of people from all that time ago. You never know offshore when a situation might crop up where you can make a difference if you know what you are doing.
I thought when you qualify it included being given a boat? Doesn't it put at the end of the paperwork a few photos to choose from? Just tick the appropriate one and where you you wold like to find it moored! Nothing too big mind - just owner operated will suffice ! !!
That was great when she pulled into the slip and he said good job, but she immediately looked over and said I need to do it again. Driving a small light weight boat like that is actually harder than a larger boat. It's effected by wind and water current a lot more. Small mistakes turn into bigger mistakes a lot quicker. She did great. It's hard to keep from getting frustrated.
Thanks Marianne, for showing us the process of learning to "drive" a boat. Like cars, it's easy on an open road, but add traffic OR parking and the pressure is on. Thanks again for sharing. BTW - Marianne I hope this will not be a simple RE-POST on you channel. Original video EACH day, thank you.

Nice to know you don't HAVE to get a license. Back in the mid eighties, my dad taught me boating skills as a young man on the Jersey shore. No license needed for salt water boating then, but I had a nice surprise when we trailered the boat to lake Hopatcong, and found out the hard way that you had to have a boat endorsement on your DL to do fresh water boating in New Jersey. Never could figure that one out, but the funky rules and laws of my old home state were some of the reasons I left over thirty years ago, Nice to live in free states😁
Well the Marianne it must’ve been really hard for her as well as doing it she know she’s being videoed and put on a RUclips channel where people could criticise her. well done
Just noticed the RIB has the wheel assist knob on the steering wheel and Marianne seems to take naturally to it. I wondered what the views of Nick, Marianne and the viewers think of that? I teach PBL2 and getting the wheel turned “promptly” when manoeuvring is something that never falls easily to students. Every vessel I’ve taught on has been without one of those knobs on the wheel. Watching this I wonder whether it would be a help or a hinderance? When I drive my finger goes in the spokes and spins the wheel that way. I’m conscious that method isn’t for everyone and I don’t want to prescribe my method as correct when the task is to turn the wheel quickly under the users control. 18:15 illustrates perfectly the control that is needed when going from ahead to astern and lock to lock at the same time. Views, with Nick’s approval, gratefully received. Oh yes and very well done to the instructor and to Marianne for a wonderful illustration of the benefits and fun of RYA Training.
in italy commander license, without limits for non commercial boats , is much harder. From theory with meteorological , charting and sea rules test in admiralty, to pratical ones , seawrecked rescue , boarding manouvres done with professional boat without bow trusters or joysticks. Got mine with 6 fts waves and 4 hours waiting in Genova Gulf. 4 licensed 6 rejected at sea 3 rejected at theory tests. Think limited license is a lot easier
Well done Marianne! I know how stressful some of these situations can be, docking always gets my heart racing! Fantastic job!! And nick, great job, as always!!
Good on you Marianne, you will make a fine captain! Word of advice, don’t keelhaul Nick you’ll need him to swab the decks and fetch the tea.... Nick, glad to hear you touting boat safety and training.

You guys rock!!! If I’m ever in the area your in I’m going to request a tour of your boat :) love ya :) From the US! Arizona not much water here but we can dream :)
it's not as easy as it looks it will be a lot harder if the water is choppy .... i don't know how i would fare doing it ..there will be a nack to doing it but also a lot of experience to master being able to steer/control and captain a boat no matter the size .. you just can't go off land and step in a boat and be able to steer it like a pro ... and well done Marianne

I do the finger under the spoke thing too, but the knob on the wheel seemed to help
@@AQUAHOLIC thanks Nick, it certainly seems to work for Marianne. More time for you to be the casual navigator to Marianne’s skipper 🤓🛥🤓
in italy commander license, without limits for non commercial boats , is much harder.
Thanks so much! 😊
it is nice to have some one show you instead of having to figure it all out yourself like the old days.. But then you are in the UK and I in the US..
Good on you Marianne, you will make a fine captain! Word of advice, don’t keelhaul Nick you’ll need him to swab the decks and fetch the tea.... Nick, glad to hear you touting boat safety and training.
Just want to say your wife is super cool! Love you both! Hope she keeps up with her channel! So many things to learn about you both. Ppl love learning and seeing real ppl! Doing there thing! You guys rock!!! If I’m ever in the area your in I’m going to request a tour of your boat :) love ya :)
From the US!
Love seeing your wife getting accustomed to water operations, good on you Nick!
Nice work soon-to-be-skipper Marianne. 👍👍
