We are in the process of making our couch and came across yours. I am so glad because you have addressed some things I didn't think about like the function that we need for our family, and the height, which I think about. I also like to commend you on cutting all your pieces out with a manual handsaw vs a circuit power saw. So above all your couch is amazing and elegant, your hard work has paid off. Oh by the way I love the wide square legs too, which I will be using for my creation. Thank you.
I am so happy to hear you find the height bit useful! I am not at the average height so I definitely pay more attention to details like that :D Thank you about your comment on the design, do email/tag me on Instagram your sofa when you've done it, would love to see it!
Hi Melody--we did it! I had to have each 8' x 4' plywood sheet sawed in half so it could enter our home, but we were able to join them as one. It came out perfectly and my wife and I cannot thank you enough for your plans. It took us about 9 days because I'm 75 and my wife is 66 so we work a bit slower than your average 30-year-old. You rock!
Rob that is amazing! So great to hear it worked out for you guys. I would be well happy if I could still do this at your age😊 Enjoy your well earned sofa 👏
Just a suggestion for anyone planning to make this sofa. The legs can be made more lightweight. Use two rectangle pieces for the bottom and build the sides with 1-2 inch strips and one through the middle. Think like a figure 8. This makes the legs hollow cutting the weight significantly. Also instead of gluing two sheets for the base, glue a U shaped piece to the bottom. This will reinforce and make the couch look sturdy while not adding so much weight. It is possible that you can make this couch for less cost and material. An additional thing could be adding drawers to the legs because they are hollow. Just some ideas
@@melesiogarcia2469 I think he means the bottom layer of the base is a U shape. The bottom of the U is the front of the sofa, and the sides of the U are the sides of the sofa with no plywood at the back where the backrest is. So from the front and sides, it looks like you've used two sheets of ply but in reality the middle and back of the bottom layer is empty, and the U layer is there just for reinforcing the base. Purely as a means to cut down on the amount of wood used, thus making the build cheaper. Let me know if I haven't explained it well enough.
This video has recently gotten more views... Thank you and an update! A year and a half on, sofa is good as ever. The removable covers and foam have already been a life saver where I've had to washed them down due to spillages. Cover in washing machine and foam hosed down in shower.
will likely do my sawing with a bread knife for how scared i am but its encouraging to see someone without a power saw prove to me that i probably could do this without maiming myself. thanks!
I absolutely love your sofa ❤ and may even build one myself…I’m impressed with the hand sawing you did and I love the layered legs. Should you ever build another, I highly recommend you get a simple jig saw, as you don’t need a circular saw. The jigsaw is neither expensive or intimidating to use and you will thank me for all of your future works of art. 💕
As a woodworker I must say great simplistic design and execution. I'm thinking of following your design I tend to over complicate things trying to make them last. One thing I was thinking doing different is using threaded inserts to attach the back board to the triangles and the triangles to the base
Pkay, I'm not sure if storage space is something you dont have, if DIY woodworking is not something you plan to do on a regular basis or if the tools are too expensive/scarry for you guys but a simple jobsite table saw (mine costed the equivalent to 300usd) the drill you already have and paint rolles from home depot (as well as something to effwctively clamp everything) wpuld be super handy on any project that includes wood and it would make this project to become a thing of starting 10AM finishing 8 pm (with a ton of distracciones, time for Lunch and other stuff) overnight glueup and assembly the next morning done before 11 am (and the first day ypu could be fabricating the textile bit of the sofa). A 1 day proyect and next day assembly
The shelf on either side is a great idea. Iove the fact that it can be used as a bed, and sawn in half to transfer. I would make a plywood box for the legs (using less wood and lighter to move) but your design would be easier in that regard. I love how the back rest can be adjusted to the correct angle for the user by the shape of the wedges. Nice, and the back rest can double as another mattress for someone staying overnight. I'll only use 1 sheet of ply for the base (weight and cost) but overall, it is a great sofa. Many thanks.
I use a handsaw for almost everything. specifically a set of various japanese pull-saws. super accurate, zero setup and mostly the same-ish speed as a power tool (waaay faster than a jigsaw!)
I know you showed us this project some time ago, but I only discover it less than 6 mo. ago. I loved it so much and was so inspired that I built one as well! Thank you so much! My family loves it. ☺️
Very nice, clean design. Fortunately, I have a circular saw because I can't imagine cutting so much 18mm plywood with a handsaw! Thank you for sharing.
Great job! It looks like an expensive modern art piece. I'm impressed with your dedication to the hand sawing bit. I would have been way too much in my own head during all of that.
Thank you! :D haha I only did max 30min of sawing per session, I treated it as exercise and that seemed to did the trick :D Fear of the alternative of getting a circular saw was enough to get me through all those, looking back now it did seem a bit silly of me! Needed to start somewhere I guess :D
I did consider that, but a slight increase in foam thickness seem to increase the cost by a lot... the height is not really an issue though so all good :)
Definitely will be trying to make my own sofa . Thank you for filming this. Nice sofas are so expensive but seeing your video gives me hope when it comes to making something yourself.
It is a great DIY project. Few concerns I would have are, 1. The corners seem quite sharp and if living in an humid climate the life of the ply would be reduced by a lot. 2. Many ply are pressure treated with chemicals for pest resistance. Not an issue for normal usage but if bits starts chipping off that might be a concern, if there are kids or pets around who can ingest them . 3. The legs seem overdone adding weight and limiting bottom storage. The backboard seems underdone for anything more than casual leaning. Id be wary of putting in screws in the sides of plywood. Maybe sufficient for the angle and usage you have but it stands out with how tough youve made the base.
Hey thank you! And thank you for taking the time on writing your feedback! Let me see if I can help with a few points. 1a. The corners are actually not sharp, as I've rounded them by sanding, but of course they can be rounded even further if needed. No one's ever been hurt by the sofa :) but then again I don't have kids or pets around. 1b. I have covered the plywood with polyurethane. 2. There are different grades of plywood you can get, I forgot the exact grade I got, and also I have sealed with polyurethane. No chipping on any of my plywood projects over the last 3 to 4 years! 3a. Agree with the legs. There are some good suggestions in the comments to make then lighter! 3b. The backboard is sturdier than it may look! I frequently crash into the back when sitting down, no signs of any wobbles. I think I put glue then screws? I can't quite remember the details. Hope this helps!
impressive video! this a true hands-on tutorial. Your advice pls in anticipation of moving one needs to 'dissemble' this bed while the legs are glued in layers like this. thanks in advance! truly love this!
Thanks for this! I'm planning one now and this design/approach really fits with my priorities as well. I'll be going for a similar length but not as deep to fit in my narrow living room.
Very Helpful video! Ill be making a slightly less deep version of this with 2 by 4s drilled together for the supports but ill be using the rest of your plans! Thanks for sharing
Thank you! I think I have the cost breakdown somewhere... But if I remember correctly, the plywood was £35 each, foam was around £200, the linen was the most expensive part but typically upholstery fabric starts around £45 per meter, I used around 5metres? Totally below £600? This was 2020, so cost likely not comparable nowadays!
So good! This idea will help me with the couch I need in my man-cave :) I have a circular saw and jigsaw too so shouldn't take too long to put together. My slight OCD tendencies cringed when I saw the plywood layers not aligned in your legs so for this I'll use clamps and other bits of plywood to ensure they're all flush when gluing.
Thank you for this!! I am going to try to make something similar, I am short and my feet always dangle, so the one I make will be rather low, and pretty big bc I want it to double as a spare bed for extended visits. This video is great, so well explained, thank you!!

Hey, there is a breakdown of cost in the sofa plan linked in the description. If I remember correctly it's less than £800, most of the cost is in the upholstery fabric which I splurged on!
I loved your sofa. I am just little confused that how did you made sure that sitting cushion doesn't slip on board when someone slides on it while sitting. Hope you got what I am trying to say.
Thank you! Yes I know what you mean, in part 2, you can see that due to the way the cover is made, there is friction between the sofa base and the bottom foam. It does move a little over time, but it definitely doesn't slide!

All great ideas! 😃 One sheet for the base is probably enough too, given u added the 5th and 6th legs in the middle 👍
could u explain what u mean by a u-shape for the base? 😁
drawers in the legs is such a good idea!

It's been almost 3 years and it's solid :) if you intend to disassemble it and move it a lot then threaded inserts would definitely be better.

Nice, I used a Japanese pull saw :) I must say I do love that little saw. Question, what do you do when it's blunt?
For a similar reason I just caved and bought a beanbag sofa for a small room then realised it could do with a base and this would work perfectly!

It is birch plywood. Bought before the price hike though.

It can do a little. I have thought about putting a small raise strip at the front, but not bothered me enough to want to change it!
Just see some Velcro to bottom or place a rug slip pad under
