Old chair needs new foam and upholstery - I used jeans (again)
“This chair just needs a new cover!” I thought, as I offered to do it for free. Turns out it needed a lot more than that. Would you do it yourself or send it to a professional upholsterer?

Reupholstering a chair with old jeans | Three Chairs Three Problems Ep. 3
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 года назад
Armed with some old jeans and a torn dining chair seat, I made a new cover and re-upholstered the chair. The first staple gun experience could have been better, but it worked out in the end. Fun discovery: making the cover from jeans is halfway to making a skirt from jeans, the choice is yours. #upholstery #oldjeans #upcycle Follow me on Instagram: homewithmelody

A broken IKEA chair (TERJE folding chair) came into my possession. DIY Plywood Desk from 1 sheet | Basic Tools | How to
Hi Melody, very inspiring, great honest video. Really enjoyed watching. Thanks for the plan. Definitely going to give this a try. Probably scale the size down a little so I have a play desk to gift one to each of granddaughters, I know they will love them. Thanks again. I've been making some great stuff but not posted any vids for a long time. Maybe I should be bolder
Hey thank you! You are a very thoughtful and skilled grandfather :) I'm sure they would love it.
It is a great DIY project. Few concerns I would have are, 1. The corners seem quite sharp and if living in an humid climate the life of the ply would be reduced by a lot. 2. Many ply are pressure treated with chemicals for pest resistance. Not an issue for normal usage but if bits starts chipping off that might be a concern, if there are kids or pets around who can ingest them . 3. The legs seem overdone adding weight and limiting bottom storage. The backboard seems underdone for anything more than casual leaning. Id be wary of putting in screws in the sides of plywood. Maybe sufficient for the angle and usage you have but it stands out with how tough youve made the base.
Hey thank you! And thank you for taking the time on writing your feedback! Let me see if I can help with a few points. 1a. The corners are actually not sharp, as I've rounded them by sanding, but of course they can be rounded even further if needed. No one's ever been hurt by the sofa :) but then again I don't have kids or pets around. 1b. I have covered the plywood with polyurethane. 2. There are different grades of plywood you can get, I forgot the exact grade I got, and also I have sealed with polyurethane. No chipping on any of my plywood projects over the last 3 to 4 years! 3a. Agree with the legs. There are some good suggestions in the comments to make then lighter! 3b. The backboard is sturdier than it may look! I frequently crash into the back when sitting down, no signs of any wobbles. I think I put glue then screws? I can't quite remember the details. Hope this helps!
Nice. Subscribed.
Great stuff. Subscribed ❤
Hey come back and start doing your videos again...loved your sofa build..
thank you were gonna make one!! no glue tho ;)
Nice! The glue is definitely not mandatory
I always like smart way and smart idea. Thanks for your idea.
Are you still making videos? these are great!
Thank you 😊 I intend to, just very slowly
@@HomewithMelody Awesome, they are usually so well done!
As a woodworker I must say great simplistic design and execution. I'm thinking of following your design I tend to over complicate things trying to make them last. One thing I was thinking doing different is using threaded inserts to attach the back board to the triangles and the triangles to the base
It's been almost 3 years and it's solid :) if you intend to disassemble it and move it a lot then threaded inserts would definitely be better.
@@HomewithMelody exactly, only reason for adding the extra effort to make It easier incase I plan on moving
Beautiful, I am going to try this for sure,
For a similar reason I just caved and bought a beanbag sofa for a small room then realised it could do with a base and this would work perfectly!
That would work! 🙂
Pkay, I'm not sure if storage space is something you dont have, if DIY woodworking is not something you plan to do on a regular basis or if the tools are too expensive/scarry for you guys but a simple jobsite table saw (mine costed the equivalent to 300usd) the drill you already have and paint rolles from home depot (as well as something to effwctively clamp everything) wpuld be super handy on any project that includes wood and it would make this project to become a thing of starting 10AM finishing 8 pm (with a ton of distracciones, time for Lunch and other stuff) overnight glueup and assembly the next morning done before 11 am (and the first day ypu could be fabricating the textile bit of the sofa). A 1 day proyect and next day assembly
Hey, yes storage space is definitely an issue :) but I agree with your suggestions!
well done
for how the seat back is done 5:33
Was it comfortable to sit on?
Yes it is! And more comfortable than before because I replaced the foam. The old foam was no longer squishy.
I need one. Twin size 😢
Way cool!
This looks great! I'm going to do a similar build for my couch and bed
Nice! Mine has been and is still serving well as a sofa/lounge/bed :)
Big fan! ❤
❤️ stay tuned, I'll be back for more!
handy hipsters ! not bad ! :)
I don't know if I classify as a hipster, but thank you nonetheless 😃
Seems like it would be simple to modify the box cover by making the top fabric a little longer to cover the additional length of the back of the cushion.
Yes definitely! It depends on where you want your closing/opening to be.
Late to the party, but loving this deep dive and narrative! I hope you keep it up!
Thank you! I will definitely be back for more videos 🙏
Nice vid, where did you purchase the foam from? Thanks!
Thank you! I got it from one of the online foam suppliers, can't remember the exact one. If you search foam cut to size, you should see a few pop up. Hope this helps !
Another premo video! Thank you!
Thank you ❤️
This video is dope!
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic job Melody. Love your couch come day bed.😊
Thank you! And a guest bed :)
That ideia was really helpful! Awesome and simple project, congrets for the video!
Thank you! Still going strong and I've had so many compliments in person 😃
Hey awesome job definitely going to give this a go! How do you figure out the dimensions for the trapezium base cushion? I found a foam store near me and I will be giving them my measurements.
The degree is the same as the back of my plywood base which I made myself, so I had all the dimensions I needed! As it's basically a rectangle with one side that is slanted, you could measure the bottom depth and top depth to get the trapezium dimensions. Hope this helps!
How much did this cost you?
Wonderful work !
What angle is the back bench supports cut at ?
I think if you want it so it can move with you then you can make it so the back rest can be easily taken off if needed.
They can be unscrewed easily. You probably could but I wouldn't move them screwed on.
I made a "Cloud" sofa similar to this... The pillow covers called "Envelope" are the best ... You did it beautifully. My material was Painter's Drop Cloth! Very durable and Cheap.. made of cotton...
Drop cloth is a good idea! Agre, Envelope are definitely the best, easy to put on and take off, and don't have to worry about zips or buttons breaking!
@@HomewithMelody Thank YOU again for your BEAUTIFUL Video
I would make this with a Twin Size Mattress... excellent for guest to sleep over.
Definitely an option! My sofa does act as a guest bed, I've heard it's very comfy 🤗
"YOU GO GIRL" So Proud of YOU!!! What did this cost you? ... Everything in total? Thank You for sharing this... EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thank you! I think I have the cost breakdown somewhere... But if I remember correctly, the plywood was £35 each, foam was around £200, the linen was the most expensive part but typically upholstery fabric starts around £45 per meter, I used around 5metres? Totally below £600? This was 2020, so cost likely not comparable nowadays!
@@HomewithMelody EXACTLY Thank YOU so much for your reply.
Looks great
Thanks! 3 years on it's still great!
Sweet video. Nice little inspiration!
Thanks, glad it's helping!
Simple, clean look, inexpensive and easy to make via your video. Thank you Melody
Glad it's helpful!
Very nice job with no fancy tools.
Thank you!
I absolutely love your sofa ❤ and may even build one myself…I’m impressed with the hand sawing you did and I love the layered legs. Should you ever build another, I highly recommend you get a simple jig saw, as you don’t need a circular saw. The jigsaw is neither expensive or intimidating to use and you will thank me for all of your future works of art. 💕
Thank you! A jigsaw is an excellent suggestion. I wish I knew about it at the time 😁
This is great, I'm gonna try this for my new home with my family. This will be our summer project!! Greetings from Chile!
Good luck! Let me know how it goes ☺️

I know you showed us this project some time ago, but I only discover it less than 6 mo. ago. I loved it so much and was so inspired that I built one as well! Thank you so much! My family loves it. ☺️
Thank you for your lovely message! So happy that you have built one and are enjoying the sofa 😊
Nice project. I'm sure someone probably mentioned this already, but adding a layer of dacron will make this soft look and feel even better. Great job any way you slice it!
I don't think anyone has actually! :D
Hi, grate video thanks! Do you think using beams instead of the plywood could work for the feet? Best Sarah
Hi, thank you! Beams would work, as long as they're thick/wide enough. That would look nice!
Great work and super simple concept
Glad you like it!
@@HomewithMelody loved it!
Good design... I have a rv I was thinking of making something like this but rv sized
Great idea!
Great looking desk, can you make a matching chair with the leftover plywood ?
Thank you! I used the leftover for some floating shelves and a TV stand
I use a handsaw for almost everything. specifically a set of various japanese pull-saws. super accurate, zero setup and mostly the same-ish speed as a power tool (waaay faster than a jigsaw!)
That ryoba is slow, a big kataba would blaze through it ...but you might get tearout
Nice, I used a Japanese pull saw :) I must say I do love that little saw. Question, what do you do when it's blunt?
no
Ok
