It doesnt get emphasized in the show bc its from the Bad Kids perspective, but the Rat Grinders were straight up living a teen horror movie. The song does so well in bringing out that tragedy. They weren't doing as well as their classmates... caught a "lucky" break in that a teacher would mentor them... they were naively led to dark rituals... their best friend gets murdered and they cover it up... one by one they get anger zombified by that adult they trusted

I think I'd like to see a sequel just because I don't feel that their story is over (Copperlilly Caterpillar is still dead, I could see the party wanting to revive her) It wouldn't surprise me if Buddy Dawn's reappearance at the end of Junior Year is handled like the Night Yorb, where it's not actually the main focus of Senior Year, so using him as a story hook for a Rat Grinders sidequest would work pretty well, I feel
oh my GOD, Mary Anne being the one to actually do the deed killing Lucy, and then once the Ratgrinders are released and Lucy's finally revived it's HER being the one to immediately go hug Lucy first..... I was GUTTED.
Kipperlily “do what it takes to survive” (3:27) with all the choices she made or was manipulated into that led her to the events of the finale… gorgeous omg imagine being filled with rage AND actively haunted
Finally, someone else who acknowledges that despite it all, the Ratgrinders were kids who didn't deserve this. Even Kipperlilly. She had problems, obviously, but she was a high schooler. Name a high schooler without problems and I'll show you an incredible liar. The fact that they brought everyone but her back still bothers me, though I don't judge them for not doing it. Brennan did a helluva job making us and them hate her.
i feel even though ultimately she is just a kid who did not deserve what happened, she was irredeemable. even with the rage diamond removed she would have tried to kill the bad kids at all costs
@@mokithepepe2454I wouldn’t go so far as to call any kid irredeemable, or any person for that matter. I’m sure that she could have eventually grown into an at least mostly well-adjusted person, maybe being shown mercy by the bad kids could have even been a part of that, even if she never ended up liking them or it took a few decades and some therapy to sink in. Still, her actions were undeniably monstrous, and I get why they didn’t bring her back, and it does make for a satisfying moment if you don’t think about it too hard. My line on redemption is that not everyone deserves a second chance, but anyone can become someone who retroactively deserves to have been redeemed, though nobody ‘deserves’ forgiveness. I think it’s generally better to err on the side of rehabilitation, at least on a systemic level (not saying you should necessarily reconnect with abusive parents or anything) with these sorts of situations though.
We got one more year to save so many souls that were fucked by this school. Aguefort's school is not a good place too go. To be fair most systems in this universe are fucked up but the juxtaposition of a (semi)modern American small town and the cutthroat environment that usually creates adventurer guilds is striking The system of adventures is needed in this world but there HAS too be a better way then, this!

I always wonder, sometimes beg, for anything to have gotten to Kipperlily before Porter. I know that rage. It is all consuming. It can be helped. It can also, very obviously, be abused. I wish we got to know the Kipperlily who stuck with Jawbone, or who he recommended to a therapist he thought could help her more effectively. I know the story is from a specific perspective. But im so glad theres many of us with love for the kids who got hurt so despicably in so many ways, and that theres no love lost for the young girl who was so angry she made easy prey for an egotistical wanna be god.
OKAY OKAY one more thing- Kipperlily walking away from Lucy at 1:37 paralleled by her then trying to run Back TOWARDS Lucy at 4:15, but being unable to catch back up with her from how far she'd strayed. I can't believe the detail you've all put into this animatic, this has had me going CRAZY for like Days now. good LORD.........
I think a big reason the Rat Grinders have captured the interest of the community is because a part of their story is about feeling unimportant in world full of amazing people, which I can't help but empathize with as just some guy watching all the incredible people on Dimension20 and Dropout.
Also the idea that even if the play by the rules you are still out stripped by those who are richer,naturally more talented,and some times just LUCKIER ((from an outside perspective)) is so frustrating and feels unfair
i could talk about the nuances of the ratgrinders and their story that i feel a lot of people simply refuse to see and this video captures those PERFECTLY

genuinely such a perfect song choice because the beats really allowed everyone participating to have such important parts in the mv!!! like no one felt overshadowed or like they were just filler for the real kickass parts. incredible stuff fr, im going to be rewatching this for a long time! very curious to know if the screen tones were added by each artist to really unify everyone’s art styles or if that was done by someone else after the fact. really great choices made all the way around guys❤❤❤
ahhh thank you so much for your kind words!!! the screen-tones were individually added; we knew we wanted a punk/grunge style for the animatic so we shared around our favourite half-tone brushes and scripted a colourboard early on to make things cohesive even through everyone's different art styles! :)
THIS IS SO CRAZYYYY UUUOOGHHHH kipperlilly pulling the knife from lucy at 3:33 GAGGEDD me. There's so many little great moments but I'll have to watch this again and again to properly appreciate them, ough!!!! The usage of colors (which, to my chronically online brain, reminds me of flipnote animation) makes everything so raw and explosive. Also the transition from artist to artist? mwah, *perfectly* cannot capture how well this was put together. each and every parts have so much to look at, just big BIG kudos to all of the artists!!

(Bought dropout a month ago and been binging so much) I love me some humanizing and giving attention to the side characters and this is what I'm talking about. Ratgrinders angst and Kipperlilly being the biggest tragedy of all is just a dagger to the heart.

It’s so cool to see the story from their perspective, because it really hammers home the tragedy of their story and the impressive animation from all the hardworking animators just enhances that by 10x
1. this is so fucking amazing and captures the rat grinders so perfectly, 2. it looks like the flowers u chose to surround lucy/her casket were blue hydrangeas? which I Love if it was on purpose, doubly so if it was not. they symbolize a lot of things but specifically rejection, forgiveness, perseverance, sincerity, and patience; all elements that are deeply tied in lucys character and story!!!
The Rat Grinders death montage had me replaying the section over and over again. This has to be the most smoothly edited animatic collab I've ever seen--9 times out of 10 I didn't notice when the art style changed, and when I did it still felt like the most natural thing in the world. Everyone involved absolutely killed it!
Oh my goddd I am so emotional because 1. Everyone who worked on this is so talented and it’s so cool to see people working together to create something like this and 2. The ratgrinders finally getting the attention they deserved. Kipperlilly’s ending made me cry! Amazing work ❤
this is art omgggg I love this. It always surprises me how creative the fandom is and how much they develop the perspectives we didn't really get to see in the actual episodes. I love seeing the way people would have carried out the story of the ratgrinders and just reveling in the angst of it all.

I'm obsesseddddd with everything about this it's everything I've ever wanted! The color pallette? Chef's kiss. The art styles that are all so different but look amazingly cohesive and tell the tragedy and horror of it all?? The way kipperlilly is consumed in the ghost of her rage that didn't even leave her in death??? The way she's the only rat grinder to not come back???? As fsjy went on I grew to LOVE the rat grinders so much (they're my horrible traumatized children) and this feels like a gift. I'm so happy that everyone who worked on this project were able to make something so gorgeous together ❤️

This has to be the most smoothly edited animatic collab I've ever seen--9 times out of 10 I didn't notice when the art style changed, and when I did it still felt like the most natural thing in the world. Everyone involved absolutely killed it!

this is art omgggg I love this. It always surprises me how creative the fandom is and how much they develop the perspectives we didn't really get to see in the actual episodes. I love seeing the way people would have carried out the story of the ratgrinders and just reveling in the angst of it all.

I'm obsesseddddd with everything about this it's everything I've ever wanted! The color pallette? Chef's kiss. The art styles that are all so different but look amazingly cohesive and tell the tragedy and horror of it all?? The way kipperlilly is consumed in the ghost of her rage that didn't even leave her in death??? The way she's the only rat grinder to not come back???? As fsjy went on I grew to LOVE the rat grinders so much (they're my horrible traumatized children) and this feels like a gift. I'm so happy that everyone who worked on this project were able to make something so gorgeous together ❤️
