Thanks for playing this song that I haven’t heard since it was a hit back in 1977. You should check out Manfred Mann’s seminal classic Do Wah Diddy Diddy from 1964 next.
I have followed the MMEB since the mid 60's before they were the Earth Band in the early 70's they morphed into one of the most progressive bands through the 70's & 80's and are still playing gigs, welcome to my world!
This song was on the "Nightingales & Bombers" album, released in 1975. It had to be '75, cause my girlfriend gave me this album for my 16th birthday. I turned 16 in August of 1975. Still one of my favorite albums of all time... do yourselves a favor and listen to the whole album. Killer album! "The Good Earth" and " Solar Fire", are killer albums as well.
Wasn't it a great time for music... man! All the reactions I see from people who were unaware of this era of music, says that we were very lucky to be alive when this music was released. Everybody trying to make a living in music, had to have the talent. No computers to help them fake it. @@utekrause8334
I've got one that I'd say you all have never heard of And he's a country music singer. David Lee Murphy and the song is Dust on the bottle. I promise you will love it. 80s music
J & Amber, another song of his written by Bruce Springsteen!! Manfred is a keyboardist, arranger, singer and songwriter. Bruce's version is best. You are overdue for more Springsteen "Rosalita", "Thunder Road" and "Jungleland" !! Great sax solo on Jungleland.
I agree with listening to those great Bruce Springsteen songs but I absolutely disagree that his original version of this song is better. Manfred Mann's Earth Band *ALWAYS* did *EVERYTHING* better than Springsteen. The only difference between Bruce's original version of "Spirits In The Night" vs. "Blinded By The Light" and "For You" is that the former is actually a good song to begin with. "Blinded By The Light?" Not so much. It's just Bruce rambling on and on for 5 minutes. And don't even get me started on the awfulness that is his original version of "For You." Manfred Mann took both those songs and made monster Progressive and Hard Rock hits out of them.
Manfred Mann released two versions of this. One where Mick Rogers sang the lead. When they switched to lead vocalist Chris Thompson the next year, they recorded it again. Most people don't realize there are two versions that you can tell apart, and they know both.
Manfred Mann go back to the early 60’s, a extremely talented band. The band split into two around 1970. One becoming The Manfreds, very popular, whilst Manfred Mann himself formed a couple of bands which morphed into the Earth Band. Manfred is a brilliant Keyboards player!
This was first released as a single in about 1973 or so and it did OK but when Blinded By The Light had that phenominal success they re-mixed it and re-released it again in 1976. I "think" this is the re-mix version. I hope someone else can chime in to verify or correct me! BTW, Springsteen's lyrics and Manfred Mann's music really nailed the summer of 1976 for me. Heading to the beach in Half Moon Bay on a warm summers night. Doing what you felt like doing. Not hurting anybody, just havin' a good time. Waking up in your own bed the next morning. Waiting to see your friends so maybe they can tell you what it was that you did the night before. "Dude! Where's my car!" Growing up in the 70's. Music, girls, cars, a little of this...a little of that. Nothing else like it.
Ya, it was released bt MM as a single in 75/76 off the album (not 73) but then released again in 1977 with a different mix and a different lead singer, hoping to cash in on the success of Blinded...Either way, I like them both. All three really. Gotta respect The Boss!@@wotgM316
I remember hearing the remix and thinking "somethings not right. It sounds different". Thankfully, after getting complaints, or "feedback" one S.J. FM station played them both back-to-back. I thought I was going crazy at 17!@@dragonan5674
It's the original with Mick Rogers on vocals. They put out another version in the US with Chris Thompson as the lead singer after the success of Blinded By The Light.

Check out his song The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) (#10 in 1968). This version of Spirit In The Night is the album version, single was shorter without the solos.

I have this song, plus "Blinded By The Light" and the third Springsteen song "For You" on my playlist for my overnight work shifts. I also have their song "The Runner" that they did for the Olympics in the 80s. It has a Pink Floyd synth vibe.
