My takeaway from this- you can pinch pennies and still make nourishing meals. One doesn’t have to resort to ramen noodles and box Mac and cheese , not judging-I’ve certainly eaten them. What we eat is a big part of staying healthy.
You're right about that. You can definitely eat healthy on a low budget
To buy a cheaper brank that i do not like taste of is not worth it for me
Luckly i can buy what i like within reason
This is so motherly of you. Not everyone had parents to show them how to think like this when shopping for food, or some just get overwhelmed with all the choices at these stores. Thank you for putting in the hard work to do these videos.
Cottage Reader, thank you for this sweet sentiment! I really appreciate it.
I love your eating on a weekly extreme budget videos !!! I can’t get enough of them
Ali, glad to hear this. Thanks!
I bet that kale and sunflower kernel over rice would be delicious with a balsamic glaze drizzle
Nya, yes, sounds good to me.
Great suggestion!
Instead of rice you can do pasta and blend the kale in to a pesto.
I love these videos and I use them as inspiration to challenge my teenage sons to learn to shop like this. College is coming up soon and we like to practice this types of shopping
You sound like a good mom 😊
@@TheQuaintHousewife Thank you so much!
I love when you do these videos. I have eaten just about all of your recipes. 🙌
Yayy, glad you like them!
She’s wonderful

You could use some kale (even the stems) food processed with the sunflower seeds and olive oil to make a kind of pesto to use on your rice or perhaps toast or eggs.
Wendy, thank you for the idea and I'm looking forward to trying it
It's nice to see new ingredients in this type of challenge. Another option for the 7th breakfast could be to divide the last 2 egg omelette in half and add one slice of toast for the last two days. 😃
Or to make french toast with it!
Portions to small for me
I really enjoy watching your videos! I always get happy when I see a new one. Not only are these helpful but also I love watching because you have such a warm personality!
I love how you do these videos that you come up with different things each time!! Yes home ech was my faverigt classes to take in school I took as many as I could.
I can’t get enough of this series. I just love these videos! You’ve made it so easy to eat on a budget. Thanks again!
Thanks Reba!
Well done! That kale is huge. You can always wash & freeze what you don't use. Then just crumble the frozen pieces into soup. I do the same with lettuce & spinach before it wilts.
Using frozen kale in soup sounds great!
Thank you for this video...that's about all Ive got for the next week and a half so I really appreciate this video :)
These are my favorite of your videos!!
Glad you like them, Katelin! Thanks!
I thought of 2 things more to do with rice: a pilaf adding an additional type of nuts from pantry, caramelized onions, butter, salt & pepper. Making a treat of sweet rice for dessert by adding milk, sugar & butter. Serve warm. If you have those staple items of course.
Love these videos. They give me a new appreciation for the bounty of food we have and make me more grateful for the money and food that I have. These videos have made me more mindful of food waste and being mindful and intentional about my food purchases. I love a slice of toast with 1 egg and 1/4 avocado mashed for breakfast, it's extremely filling.
Keep up the great work with the relatable, real content!
Thank you, J! Your meal sounds very satisfying :)
BRAVO !
ENCORE !
More of your budget menus please.
I have learned many useful tips
watching these videos.
I wouldn’t alter any of your dishes
and the eggs really looked super.
Thanks!
Thanks John!
Onions will keep for months if you place them into nylons one at a time, tie a knot between each onion. Hang them in a cool dry place. When you need one, cut one off or untie the knot.. It really works well.
You can also dice and freeze!
What are nylons?
@@DiverseKitty pantyhose
@@DiverseKitty stockings or hosiery. Usually of the man made fabric nylon. I personally, would not use my silk stockings for this...
I've missed this type of video from you! Thanks for posting this!
Thank you Kelly!
Thanks for explaining the nutritional value of the meals.
I like that you take the nutritional value of foods into consideration vs just throwing a bunch of cheap fillers in the cart as some do. Good job!
Great video, as usual. I live in Michigan and I will tell you that I could Braunschweiger every. single. day. Bread, a little mayo, sliced onion and that lovely meat.....mmmmmmm
I have never tried with mayo but I know people that love it that way! Thanks Russell!
You make everything look delicious! I'll try it minus the onions. I'll use the green onions instead! It looks healthy and filling. Thanks you so much for these low cost idea's! I LOVE your channel!
Thank you! I would rather have the green onions myself. I just didn't want to pass up the big onion deal!
I can always count on you to make creative dishes! I would never have come up with these ideas myself.
Pretty creative ideas for what you purchased. I'd love to see you make one of these types of videos incorporating inexpensive soups.
the sunflower kernels with kale served on a bed of brown rice looks very edible. makes me want to cook it for myself!
I think you make the best grocery budget videos. I end up rewatchong them because I love them so much!
Oh thanks, Rach. I loved reading this :)
Another option. Put sunflower seeds in food processor for nut butter on toast. Awesome vlog.
Jessica, that is a lovely idea. Thanks :)
You are the queen of these challenges! You give me so much inspiration! My grandmother always had liver wurst in the house. I loved the way you displayed the food it looked like a painting!!
Oh thank you, Lauren!
I grew up primarily in Texas & Arizona my dad was from Illinois he use to give me braunschweiger on saltines with mustard for a snack. once in a while I crave it when I see it at Walmart.
Arizona, thanks for telling me about your familiarity with it!
I enjoy your videos. You do a good job with food and give us good ideas of eating frugally. I live in the Northwest and our grocery prices are twice as high as yours, but I do my best to keep our costs as low as possible.
I love when you do these videos they are such fun! My nine year old actually asked when I was heading to the grocery store today to make your rice and beans from another of your videos lol
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I really appreciate how you break down the step by step process in selecting the food choices. I love all your recipes. They look so yummy and nutritious. I think these extreme budget meals and shopping trips are spot on and enjoyable to watch, not only for the general broke situation, but especially now that so many are out of work- thank you for offering a way to get variety at the lowest possible price.
My 'cheap meat' go-to is always a turkey kielbasa, they last forever and go in almost everything, I can find them on sale often and they are always worth having on hand.
Lane, happy to hear these videos make a difference! Thanks!
I love mustard on about everything. My German grandparents served liverwurst. Strangely, I also like a squeeze of lemon on many foods including potatoes, rice, kale and various fishes and chicken.
Thanks for another emergency extreme week! I love seeing how differently other people put the same puzzle together, so to speak. Onions are a staple for me, they have more vitamin C than citrus. This year I've switched to buying many lot of my vegetables frozen so that I don't have to go out but once a month or less, but fresh onions, cabbage, carrots, and apples will generally last the whole time.
I haven't met anyone who eats liverwurst here in GA, other than my own transplanted family, lol. I did recently indulge in a sardine sandwich that was also just toast, mustard, onions, and sardines. I haven't eaten liverwurst in years and now I'll have to get some in the next shopping trip if budget allows. :)
Frozen veggies or those long-lasting fresh ones are musts now! Love those sardine sandwiches like that on toasted bread!
Funny..I just had a sardine sandwich with mustard and onions yesterday..I shop basically the same way you do
Thank you for posting these videos. I love watching them. I admire you for cooking kale. I’ve never been able to enjoy. I knew someone who dehydrated them and ate them as chips. They were a bit salty, but ok. I tried kale in vegetable soup, but added too much and it over powered the soup. Kale for me at last resort. Thank you for teaching us!
Ooooohhhhhh!!!! I’ve never considered sunflower kernels like that before?!!!! COOL!!!!
Sprinkle some salt on your hands and wash under cold water will take the onion smell off your hands.
Good to know Thanks!
You are so excellent at this!!
Thank you, Anna!
My youngest is 41. I took them grocery shopping with me. You can get lots of carrots, eggs, rice, oatmeal, pasta, etc. Or just a little of the fancy prepared
foods they showed on TV. One is a great cook. Two are smart with money. If the third didn't look like her grandpa, I'd swear she was a changeling.
I'd never eat liverwurst. My mom used to buy it. Tina, Al's wife
I grew up in New England. We ate liverwurst sandwiches with onion, mustard and mayonnaise. Yum!
I love how balanced your meals are. I would love to see a one month emergency family haul that gave allowance of fifteen or twenty dollars for spices or condiments alone...so you could enjoy your favorites. It would be fun to hear a vote of what your family favorites are from what you make. It is easier to make a variety of meals from a budget for a family than from an individual...and you do them both so well!
Yes I do get excited at the thought of a budget challenge. I love your channel because it is different it doesn't rely on the same old things all the time that everyone else does. You're always thinking outside of the box.
Goodi, I try! Thanks!
I am a diabetic. So far the rice, grapes and bread are not in my diet. I eat a lot of cabbage though.....😊
You can eat the rice, just 1/4 cup. The grapes you can eat, small portions, wheat bread is good for you just in moderation. I’m diabetic, too.
Cabbage is just awesome! God bless
Try lettuce leaves to mock the bread in sandwiches. Riced cauliflower to replace the rice. Blueberries to replace the grapes. All are within the price points of the original items. P.S. I'm a cabbage lover too!
You had all the perfect replacement items for diabetics...good going!
Im im type11 diabetic and in these amounts i coud have everything on these budget weekly meals. They are reasonablely priced and well balanced.
Yes, we have liverwurst on the West Coast.
I love the shopping trip experience. It really helps me think of options! I think fried rice with grilled onions would taste great as well!
Good job, you have a gift for this! Man, the store seemed super quiet... Here in California they do sell braunschweiger but I think most people who eat it moved here from back East somewhere... 🙇🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Love your extreme food shopping hauls! You do a really good job of making it nutritious as well as cheap. The eggs with the kale and avacado look delicious. Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for watching Lisa!
Thank you. I really like your videos. You are an excellent teacher and you have a good voice.
You are too sweet. Thanks!
That looks tasty. I was thinking diced tomatoes on that egg dish would rock. IMO. Ty for the recipe.
Another wonderful video dear lady. I would like to try the roll sausage in place of the liverwurst which I also love and I was always raised on liverwurst with mustard and onions. My dad was from germany. I think my fav is your breakfast. Looks yummy. Very nutritious meals. Thank you so much. Do the kitties get a little bit of liverwurst?
Me Ma -- Yes, they love it, so I give them a tiny piece each :) Nice to hear about your dad. I love German foods, including all the sausages!
The egg dish with avocado looks really great. I love those sauteed onions. I would probably put that on top of a tortilla with some cheese. It's very straightforward of you to critique your dish and make changes on camera instead of acting like everything is perfect. That looks great
Shoplifting can make a difference
We only had home ec in 6th and 7th grade. We baked cookies and sewed something. I should have paid attention to how to read a recipe. I didn't learn that until 2010 when I moved into this apartment, and a friend told me how to do that. We also had wood shop: I made a clock and a bridge and a napkin holder.
Michelle, I never had wood shop but had home ec in the 7th to 12 grades. Your wood shop projects sound very useful! It's never too late to learn how to cook or read recipes!
I just tried the breakfast recipe today and loved it!! Even though these are budget meals, they are perfect for anytime. As someone who struggles to make meals because I find them complicated, you make tasty so easy. Thank you!
"Tastes great with lipstick"...
You are too funny! 😆
Thanks Naomi 😁
Hi! I love your videos! I especially appreciate how you make sure you have fiber in your choices!!!
Lots of these budget videos are all white rice and white bread. Yuk!!!
I am a disabled senior living on Social Security. My budget is really tight.
As someone who detests Braunschweiger, could you recommend an alternative protein source?
Have a wonderful day!
Another great video. You look lovely, and the food looks delicious. I haven’t had liverwurst since I was a girl, but I remember my parents and grandparents eating it often. Is it time to give it another try?? We’ll see!
Another great video! I think that I would sauté some onion (as you have so much of it) , with the kale and sunflower seeds , to put on top of the rice.
I like that idea!
So many people are going hungry. I’ve seen long lines of cars waiting at the food pantries. Some people are leaving with nothing because they ran out of food. On the news they reported that one in twelve adults are suffering food insufficiency.
Indeed! These are very pressing times right now!
Yet another awesome video. Thanks!!
Your videos are so entertaining. I love the challenge aspect.
I love Brunswiger or how ever you spell it. Thank you, I haven't had it in forever.
It had been a while for me too. Love having it in my menu this week!
Oh.me too
If you don't want to eat the nuts with the kale, you could saute some onions and add a can of white beans. Every once in a while I eat this with spinach.
We actually had snow today. It's still snowing. My mom says you can make snow balls, there's no way I'm going outside. Luckily I have a lot of food.
LOL Michelle. Sounds like mom wants you to have some outdoor fun!
I'm in Florida and a lot of us hibernate in summer..now the weather is beautiful!!
Fried kale and eggs is a regular breakfast here...but I have a garden and chickens.
Kale is easy to grow, its gone wild here and even survives WI winters to reseed in spring. Plant it two years running and you will never run out. Knock snow off, pick it in winter too. I consider it an emergency survival garden staple, it takes care of itself. .
You are so fabulous at these videos. You do truly inexpensive meals that are healthy and flavourful. Even though I’m from Australia, you’ve still taught me so much.
Glad to know. Thank you!
Love this kind of food budget videos. Nice job.
My tip for eliminating brown edges on 🥑. Cut with a plastic knife rather than metal. 👍
The breakfast looks delicious to me! I find your videos so relaxing and helpful. Thank you for sharing.❤️
Thanks so much Sherry! 😊
Avocados are the food of the Gods! I try to eat them as much as possible. They are also an anti-inflammatory food. I loved home economics too! Do they still teach that today? We learned everything in home ec as far as running a household, but I went to school when penny loafers were in style, so, a long time ago lol. Your videos are informative and fun to watch. I do need these types of videos because my income has gone down greatly. Thank you for your videos!
Hi Jill. So good of you to be eating those avo's! Yes, home ec is around but in less schools. Most of the time it is called Family & Consumer Sciences now!
I like your budget videos; I tinker with them to suit my family's need (I have picky eater at the table) and that first egg dish is something I hadn't considered but now will. I do not like avocados myself, so I would swap them out with the grapes, since it would be like eating jelly with the omelet, and that is precisely how I like eggs. Thanks.
I grew up in the midwest and LOVE liverwurst. Do you have Aldi's? Eggs are about $.30 a dozen. What about making your own bread?
I have to pay 3.33 a doz eggs
Hi Stephanie. Yes, Aldi is accessible. I have an Aldi food budget challenge published as well. I have made my own bread a lot. Thanks!
Wow..1.30 at Aldi's here in Florida yesterday
@@TheQuaintHousewife Cool! I find Aldi's is much cheaper in their dairy department.
I enjoy watching these. It also serves as a reminder for portion control. I have seven children, half of them are teenagers. It gets difficult to meal plan because I have spoiled them with so many choices throughout their lives. Not to mention unlimited portions, though they do need more calories due to sports and being active.
I understand your dilemma and you sound like a great mom!
First of all.. you made some good iron-rich choices for a person with anemia, such as myself. Secondly.. I LOVE braunschweiger. I grew up on it also. A few weeks back I made a pate using it, combined with cream cheese, fresh mushrooms chopped and cooked in butter, grated onion, Worcestershire and a dash of cayenne.. yum!
That pate sounds fabulous!
I live in Southern California. My mother is from North Carolina, and until a few years ago, the only time we had liverwurst was when we would go visit my grandmother in Kannapolis. An Aldi was built in our county about 3 years ago, and she buys liverwurst there... Love your channel!!!
🤤 I agree! Rice with EVERYTHING!!!!! a leftover bowl of rice with an over medium egg and hot sauce or a smidge of ketchup is comfort food... that avocado or jalepeno would be nice too!
I’m also a HUGE fan of peanutbutter rice lol. I overboil it and eat it like oatmeal 😋
Can I ask you how do you make peanut butter rice ? I bought a jar of peanut butter today with the thought to stir it through rice. How do you do yours ? :)
Quaint, this morning I thought "gee I wish Quaint had another one of those budget videos today" and here you are. I enjoy your food combinations because they are different than I'm used to and I get new ideas. I'm not much on kale though, could you suggest an alternative 🤔?
I ate liverwurst and cream cheese sandwiches as a child in Los Angeles.
Wow wurst and cream cheese. I think that could be really good. I must try it! An alternative to the kale would be whatever greens are cheapest to you (if price is an issue). If you like a mild tasting greens I suggest fresh spinach leaves. Another tasty option is cabbage. You can also do collard greens and turnip greens, but the latter is very strong tasting and not everyone likes them.
If you see over ripe bananas, snag them. Mash them up - make up pancake mix normally, add 1 tsp vanilla and 1.5 mashed bananas per cup of pancake mix you use. You are welcome in advance. They are AWESOME!
Love your tips and videos! So helpful and Inspiring! Would love to see a video of budget Instacart shopping for those who can’t get out to the store in person.
Where’s all the employees and customers at the store? Did they shut it down for you? 😜
There were some people in the store, but I aim to keep people off camera.
Altogether great job! I can see using this list on a limited budget and adding just a few dollars for a great week. We have local discount stores that have some great deals on fresh veg and fruits. I can get a 3# bag of apples for 1.99 and Bell peppers for 50 cents each, along with weekly specials and also a good markdown shelf. I have been following you and especially loved when you did the breakfast of pancakes with yogurt and apple slices. Thanks for sharing and have a great holidays.
Barbara, those deals around you sound fabulous! Sometimes a couple of dollars can change everything!
Those hungry college student days were a great inspiration for learning to eat on an extreme budget. Extreme by mainstream standards but not extreme by emergency standards. Having a pantry stocked with months or years worth of shelf-stable foods is like money in the bank for hard times.
Agreed on all points!
Nice video. I will definitely try these recipes, especially the sunflower and kale one. My husband and I were amazed with adding water to scrambled egg thing. That's something we've never seen done in our area of the US. Everyone here adds milk but I just like mine plain since I'm lactose intolerant.
Megan -- I still use water most of the time. Water makes eggs fluffier. Milk makes them creamier. Both work but I figure why bother getting the milk out LOL
This was wonderful as always. Would you please consider doing a video with your version of a to-go breakfast bar? I absolutely love to see various takes on the at-home breakfast bars and I am sure you could do an incredible breakfast bar without spending a whole bunch of money since many of your videos are about how to shop and create delicious and nutritious meals even on a tiny budget. Thank you so much for sharing. These videos are extremely helpful.
Hi there -- thanks! Did you see my homemade granola bar video?ruclips.net/video/oJ-ZkFEiYqo/видео.html It is highly customizable in terms of additions.
Hello from Alabama and yes we have eaten Braunschweiger many times.
I find other supermarket's cheaper in price than Kroger's. I like the crisp veggies, such as how you made the jalapeno pepper! I hope you do a vegan budget video one day. Enjoyable, thanks.
was the first bkfst spicy with the jalapeno? I think the more it's cooked the hotter
This can really help people stretch a buck, great video ! ❤
You are my absolute favorite at these kinds of videos!!!!! I know I have a big family but these are still extremely helpful for us. I had my kids do a $60 challenge for a family of 8 fir a week and they actually did a really good job!!!! They watch you with me 🎄❄️😊
You are teaching your kids well!
12×8=96...$96 so you did exceptionally for a family of 8 for $60...
@@crazycatslave thank you!!! 😊
Love your videos. How about another day of just avocado toast for breakfast and add the eggs , hard boiled and sliced, to the kale and rice bowl. I like a light breakfast and heavier dinner and this would rearrange the calories a little
The addition of onions and or olive of choice to dinner rice and kale dish may be another option.
Really appreciate your tips and tricks.. !!
My pleasure!
Love your challenges! I live in NE TN but grew up just S of Chicago. I am very familiar with braunschweiger being first generation American and of German heritage. I can picture my mom picking almost identical items, trading the grapes and sunflower seeds for canned herring!
Erika, that is interesting! I have some German background and my husband is Swedish and German American. He loves pickled herring and creamed herring.
I live in Arizona but from Indiana and Michigan. I like making liverwurst sandwiches with onion butter salt and pepper sometimes with mayo. For people that have the 99 only dollar stores they sometimes carry it.
Third mayo-wurst eater on this page! I had never thought of butter. I am curious about it now!
I m new to the channel and enjoy and learn a lot from the content. What did you go to college for? I’ve heard you talk about it in the past in a few vids.
Hello Mr. Joseph! Thank you for subscribing! I was an English major. Thereafter I worked as an editor and writer for many years.
Girl no, I’m 51 I grew up in a house where liver wurst was always purchased as well as Spam, Cornbeef. I told myself never again if I can help it I will never eat it again.
Braunschweiger isn't my favorite, but mustard helps. My other suggestion would be horseradish, that sounds good.
My husband likes horseradish, so I might suggest him eating the wurst this way. Thanks!
