I read the description after noticing; shouldn't be surprised you caught that. It seemed you were trying to move it gingerly during the off-axis test but holy frijoles that handling noise was BAD. Great sound for $50 though, actually sorta tempted to get one to complement the V7! It's actually intriguing how they don't have frequency response from when it's 2in off like they do with the V7 so it's easier to compare, but it sounds... not ideal from right on top.
Graphs are nearly impossible to compare from mic to mic because there's no standard which is kind of a pain. 1m away is fine and all, but I can't think of many people who use mics a meter away...certainly not on stage or in content creation. Maybe for orchestral recordings or drum overheads, and definitely for room mics .
Great review as always man. I can't decide if I like the V2, V7 or SM58 the most, but they all sound good. I just received a Beta 58A for free which I'm excited to start using for my gaming channel, but I'm going to customize it by painting it white first. Keep up the good work, I love your content and you humor.
Well a free mic is hard to beat. Sounds like you've got the best mic of them all for now. Hope it works out well for you. Be careful when painting it, and I'd recommend against painting the grill. That may cause a vent to get covered and change the sound.
Lol I have same mic and may try the paint job. Got it used but damn it gives a nice warmth and rejects noise better than any mic. Sounds surprisingly great on my acoustic guitars.
Reminds me of an SM57 tonally - hugely versatile, boosted upper midrange sound and could fulfill the same roles on a tight budget. Great review as always!
Any plans to review the JZ BT 202? Seems to have quite different sound signature compared to the SDCs you have reviewed and would like to hear your opinion on it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't really want to add even more data to the lower third because they're already too dense. Adding more numbers would just make it more cluttered. I state the price of the mics and place them in order of price lowest to highest already so I think that should probably be more than sufficient for most people.
You got me wheezing at the beginning, if you do see this I really need your opinion, under $100, should I do a diy Shure sm7b with one of these hand helds, should I buy the blue yeti X for $70, or should I buy fifine k688 for about $70, or save a bit for the maono PD400x for like $120-$140 (IMO sounds like the closest budget Audio Technica BP40 that’s what I’m trying to go for however I don’t have that money so i know it’s not possible but with XLR and hand held and modern technology you can get close, as well streaming and video compression most won’t notice a difference.
Hello! Thanks to the amazing videos, I've been getting a lot of help in choosing a microphone! If you had to choose between XM8500 and Se V2, which one would you choose? Please judge based solely on sound! Um... I'm not sure.
Either would be fine. The Xm8500 is brighter and a bit muddier and the V2 is smoother. Depends which you like. I'd probably go sE, but that's personal taste.
Great review 👍!At $50 it sounds really nice. Mic stand will be a must on this mic. It sounded more clear with pop filter. V7 at $100 is a great value and investment. Epic guitar playing, i replayed guitar section multiple times 👏👏👏! Chair fall 🙀……
Was just in the market for a mic and after watching so many reviews... I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger yet. The XM8500 sounds good to me but the V2 Switch background noise rejection is really good which seems like a better option for my noisy environment.
Hi everyone, thanks for that great test. Once again I believe it would be perfect if you could add a female voice to your test. 3 points: 1. sE rocks 😄 whatever the mic you buy from this brand, you won't be disappointed. 2. sE seems to start a strategy of making cheaper version of some of their best products: After releasing the DMC 3 & 6 from the dynacaster (who becomes DMC 7) they do the same with the V2 from the V7. What is noticeable is that it is done without downgrading the sound quality. 3. This mic compete (with the same strategy) with the shure PGA 48 lc which is the little brother of the sm48 and both at the same price range (you also made a review of this mic). I was planning to buy a V7, the handling noise is not a problem to me, I admit the only thing who makes me still choose the v7 is the beauty of this mic, especially the limited edition series.
I would like to add female vocal tests to my reviews, I unfortunately don't have any friends in my town to record with and I don't have the budget to hire voice actors for their time. One day I hope to be able to get someone to help with that though. Thanks for the input.
Given it’s real world use case is “number 42 to the snack bar” and it’s one of the only competitors to the sennheisers we currently supply, I’d say job done.
For those applications where people are seeking extremely budget mics, I think it's a fantastic offering because I prefer it to the other $50 mics and it has that on off switch. Thanks for sharing that.
It is getting pretty crazy how good cheap mics are now. I definitely love sE persoanlly, I have a matched pair of sE8s and a matched pair of RN17s (which are ridiculously heavy for SDCs.)
PODCASTAGE: that was an interesting fall. I was going oh my gosh as your equipment was bouncing attached to the XLR doobly-doo. ... ! (you know, hoping it wouldnt like, fall over or something)
I do have a suggestion: Can you do a test of handling noise from different microphones? Does not matter if it's dynamic or condenser. And know what? I kind of like the sound of handling noise in both V2 and V7 microphones.
I'll eventually try to find which one does the best with handling noise. I just need to find a way to do a proper repeatable test that eliminates as many variables as possible.
Would you consider upgrading to the V2 from the XM8500 for fieldwork, press conferences, and one-on-one interviews? I'm not too keen on taking the V7 out into the field, risking having an angry coach slap it off the podium.
My question would be why? Is there a massive drawback to the XM8500 that you're trying to resolve, and something you're hoping the V2 will fix? Or are you just looking to upgrade for the sake of upgrading? My advice is always to upgrade with intent, so if there's nothing in particular wrong with the XM8500 that you're trying to fix, I would say stick with the XM8500.
The V2 has massive handling noise! Twice that of the XM! So, def NOT for any kind of fieldwork! For ur situation, u probably have the best budget mic already.
@@MaximusAdonicus I've yet to really find anything for what I'm doing or a better ROI to beat my XM. This mic shouldn't sound this good for what it cost me!
@@Podcastage What is crazy is that I didn't get the notification for this reply, until today. My biggest issue is trying to mic really tall athletes that don't practice good microphone technique or stand in the same direction that I placed the microphone on the really tall mic stand on the really short Lectern. Plus I'm always looking for more clarity in less than ideal recording environments. I think I'm going to continue to stick with the XM8500.
I don't currently have a V96 and it's not within my budget at this time, but thank you very much for the recommendation. I have been impressed by Beyerdynamic and hope to try it out sometime.
I suppose it could work for that as long as you like the sound of the mic. Keep in mind that no mic is going to eliminate all background noise or reflections, so don't expect this mic to make you sound like you're in a fully treated room.
Yep, it sounds like the V3. Thought it would. Maybe you should get a kickstand for your chair, tho, eh? It might help with the throwing of the mic box next time!
To my untrained ear that sounds an awful lot like the smooth sm7b.... To me it just kind of has that warmed rounded off kind of smooth sound just like the shure sm7b..... But again my ears are untrained and that's why we leave these incredibly detailed, ridiculously helpful reviews to the pro like yourself
Ouch. Great lunge into the box void. Second ouch. It's not often I hear the nuances you're talking about. The handling on this was at fifine k688 levels. And here's it's on a hand style mic! I guess physical cartridge isolation costs a big chunk of the extra $50. In a way it vindicates the poor handling of some of the rising budget brands as clearly it is hard to do all of cartridge+shell+isolation+profit well in $50. 3rd ouch: (unless you meant only your Sunday podcasts were de-monetising) YT threw two ads at me at the start. 🧙🖖
This channel has too much overhead to shut off ads and monetization. If I didn't have any of that, I would have had to shut down in year 1 because I would have just drove myself into crippling debt to buy everything to review. I thought I stated I was only shutting off advertisements on the podcast channel, not every channel I run. Sorry if that was confusing.
Whatever good stage mikes could be, if you cannot hear other than rumble on a concert. This SE makes a nice coloration to your voice, which definitely missing from original and Behringer. Difference is so small (on Samsung cellphone), but price diffence is hearable. SE over Mackie and Behringer. Would be interested in Dynamic USB mic.
Honestly I think the V2 it's the best sounding mic on there. It was very flattering on your voice. I always have to eq out the harshness in sm58s and I hear absolutely none of that on the V2. The low mid warmth is great on your voice, but I could hear it being a bit much on a baritone or bass voice. Might be a good mic to have in my pelican. Thanks for the review!
Really like this mic, nice and flat sounding and a real ear pleaser imo. Definitely going to be my new budget mic recommendation and I'm kinda looking to maybe grab one myself at this price point
Glad the video was able to help you make that determination. I hope that if you do decide to pick one up, that it treats you well and you get a lot of great recordings with it. Thanks for commenting Jacob.
Just as I hit publish on my summary review, low and behold, THE KING posted his royal review of the V2 as well 🙂 Your review's are more in-depth anyway, so I was curious to see what you thought about it! Yup, another worthy contender from sE. It has its place in the locker, I believe. Good value and it sounds good on baritone voices as well. And speaking about handling sensitivities, I had a CRAZY experience with this mic in a desktop mic stand picking up some odd sounds. Figured out what it was, but is specific to this mic (so far).
Thank you so much for producing videos on mics to offer another data point and another opinion so that people can make more informed and educated decisions on their mic selection. You're an absolute legend.
Sounds amazing, love how sE started preferring a very flat sound, I remember them as being overly bright and harsh but they have been killing it lately. I just got a V7x and looking to get a 4100 for my LDC
...but I like to "Hello Neumann," along with you. It was just me being the dork today. It felt lonely and bad. I rather liked the SEV2S mic compared with the 8500(which I own) but I always like the SM58 so I may need to set my pennies aside for one.
Countless performers need a switched dynamic, in fact, a number of them. Every tour I’ve been on in the last 15 years has at least 6 on stage for performer talkback to engineers. Making them in full-hiding black was wise. sE should sell them in 6-packs - $249 out the door, hold the stickers! In all honesty it doesn’t sound great. Does that matter?
For talk back mics the sound wouldn't really matter at all. I"m sure at this price they'll fly off the shelves for sure. As always thank you so much for sharing your insight.
In the treated room it's the 18i20 2nd gen, in the untreated space it's the 2i2 3rd gen. The preamps are very very similar, so it should be mostly negligible in terms of the impact.
If you bang on your desk a lot just try to mount it to a different desk or get a floor stand so it's not acoustically coupled to the surface you keep hitting and dropping your mouse on.
I don't have any current plans to do so. I had them preordered for 3-6 months and they never shipped so I cancelled the order. Then I heard a few videos on them and I wasn't terribly impressed by the sound I heard so I chose not to spend hundreds of dollars on them. There hasn't been much in terms of requests to cover them either. I think this may be the second or third request. I don't currently have any plans to review them but maybe I will in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@Podcastage it would be interesting to find out who your demographic is and if their requests for what mics you review are influenced by where they are based I know some of the mics you have reviewed aren’t or weren’t available in the UK or Europe. There are some available in Europe that you can’t get in the states. They are mainly based on Chinese made capsules but they provide great sound on a stupidly low budget that in some cases is lower than the Behringer XM8500. I wonder if you have come across mics by Thomann in Germany or Prodipe of France especially their TT-1 Lanen.
@@Podcastage its a kick drum mic people say sounds great on voice and is compared to the sm7b. I love how interesting it looks with the grill on the back of it too. It has great room rejection accord to others. I like it because Its has the upsides of an sm7b with less of the drawbacks including it being louder so less need of a good pre amp as well as it not being as dark as the sm7b. I'm not sure if its still being manufactured but you can find some for around 90-100
Hey! I'm looking to get a condenser mic bundle and consider getting the maono PM320S Condenser Microphone Pack. I would really appreciate if you reviewed it.
I don't currently have that mic and haven't ordered it so it's not currently in the schedule of mics to be reviewed. Perhaps further down the road I'll get around to reviewing it though. Thanks for the suggestions.
I would ask you a question in return. Why do you want to change from the AT2020? What's the issue you're trying to resolve. Does the sE V2 resolve those issues? If so, then it may make sense. But if you're looking to upgrade or make a lateral shift just for the sake of making a lateral shift/upgrade, I'd advocate against that.
So the SM58 sounded surprisingly shallow, and Mackie sounded like the funkiest thing ever. I need to research EM89d some more... edit: just looked at the Mackie review you did and holy damn you really look leagues better now
It's all about selecting the mic that is right for your application. Seems like you're honing in on what's important for you .Thanks for sharing Lawrence, it's great to hear.
Sounds well but I am put off by this black/ red diabolical combination of colors. Great for vampires who like to sing though! You just need a long cap and off you go...
I'm not saying that. I'm saying if you like the sound of it, and the handling noise won't be an issue, then consider it because it compares pretty favorable to the other $50 mics in my opinion. Haha. Did I hedge that recommendation enough?
I mean, if you need a solid wired karaoke mic, this is probably your best bet, or if you've got a singer who gets really harsh. V7 is still better, but, more expensive.
V7 is better in every way shape or form. For $50 against the competition at that price I think it's pretty competitive. I like it better than the XM8500, SM48, Mackie.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this lifedimensinos. I agree that a pop filter and mic stand are necessary .
Thank you for leaving in the fall - I've done that more than once, and now I feel less embarrassed. 😆
Glad that it could help you feel less embarrassed. Ha.
Was just in the market for a mic and after watching so many reviews... I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger yet. The XM8500 sounds good to me but the V2 Switch background noise rejection is really good which seems like a better option for my noisy environment.
Glad the video was able to help make that determination. Hope which ever mic you land on treats you well.
Hi everyone, thanks for that great test. Once again I believe it would be perfect if you could add a female voice to your test.
3 points:
1. sE rocks 😄 whatever the mic you buy from this brand, you won't be disappointed.
2. sE seems to start a strategy of making cheaper version of some of their best products: After releasing the DMC 3 & 6 from the dynacaster (who becomes DMC 7) they do the same with the V2 from the V7.
@@Podcastage This is the way 😄
Nice biff out of the chair 😮Super Epic Bro 😂. Love yah and all the vids Brother you Rock
sE back with another great value offering 😁
Absolutely. They keep doing it.
Thanks for sharing that.
looking pretty skinny there, dude! looking good! how'd ya do it?
It is getting pretty crazy how good cheap mics are now. I definitely love sE persoanlly, I have a matched pair of sE8s and a matched pair of RN17s (which are ridiculously heavy for SDCs.)
Agreed. There's less and less justification for people to have bad audio.
PODCASTAGE: that was an interesting fall. I was going oh my gosh as your equipment was bouncing attached to the XLR doobly-doo. ... ! (you know, hoping it wouldnt like, fall over or something)
I try not to drop stuff but it will inevitably happen.
lol I hope not with those beautiful Empirical Labs Distressor EL8SX Stereo Pair with British Mode in that rack!😲@@Podcastage
Incredible mic for such a price... Thanks so much 🙂
I agree. Great mic at a crazy good price. Thank YOU for watching and commenting.
Se V2 handling noise is crazy bad IMO. dude glad you ok after that fall.
Is it weird if I prefer the sound of your voice in an untreated room on this mic?
I hear that from one person in each video so it's not weird.
sounds really good in comparison. Surprising rejection.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree the rejection was pretty darn good.
Hello. Good time. Thank you for the tutorials you publish.
Please also publish a tutorial about the beyerdynamic TG V96 microphone.
Thanks a lot.🙏
I don't currently have a V96 and it's not within my budget at this time, but thank you very much for the recommendation. I have been impressed by Beyerdynamic and hope to try it out sometime.
@@Podcastage Thanks a lot🙏🙏
Would you recommend this for recording vocals in a studio that doesn´t have sound treatment?
I suppose it could work for that as long as you like the sound of the mic. Keep in mind that no mic is going to eliminate all background noise or reflections, so don't expect this mic to make you sound like you're in a fully treated room.
Yep, it sounds like the V3. Thought it would. Maybe you should get a kickstand for your chair, tho, eh? It might help with the throwing of the mic box next time!
Yeah perhaps I should haha. Thanks.
10/10 box throw
Thank you very much I've been practicing.
Excellent box throw!
Thank you Bandrew
Whatever good stage mikes could be, if you cannot hear other than rumble on a concert. This SE makes a nice coloration to your voice, which definitely missing from original and Behringer. Difference is so small (on Samsung cellphone), but price diffence is hearable. SE over Mackie and Behringer. Would be interested in Dynamic USB mic.
best box throw to date
Dang that's quite the compliment. Glad I did the best ever.
You're very welcome, I'm glad the video was helpful in determining what you liked about the mic and how it might work well. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting Jacob.
would you recommend this over the xm8500 and q2u?
Just as I hit publish on my summary review, low and behold, THE KING posted his royal review of the V2 as well 🙂
Your review's are more in-depth anyway, so I was curious to see what you thought about it!
@@Podcastage you are too kind.
I think the Hello Neumann will make a comeback.
omg the v7 sound so good
Yeah it's a really good sounding mic.
Thinking of getting this for a talkback mic. The switch will keep it off unless i need it.
I imagine this would be a great talkback mic because it sounds pretty good and it's affordable and it has the switch.
@@Podcastage that’s my thoughts too. Plus I use the V7 so why not
Countless performers need a switched dynamic, in fact, a number of them.
I tell you what, if I wasn't already subscribed, your chair fall would've IMMEDIATELY fixed that.
Thank you so much Mark, that really means a lot.
What pick did you use on the acoustic?
Just thought of this are you still using the same interface in the untreated room? Just curious...
In the treated room it's the 18i20 2nd gen, in the untreated space it's the 2i2 3rd gen. The preamps are very very similar, so it should be mostly negligible in terms of the impact.
I giggled like a kid when you said, "earholes".
Glad I could make you laugh.
This seems like it would be a great mic for a cheap gaming setup. Excellent background noise rejection.
If you bang on your desk a lot just try to mount it to a different desk or get a floor stand so it's not acoustically coupled to the surface you keep hitting and dropping your mouse on.
Requesting a review of the Behringer B5, might be the only thing to beat the Mackie EM89d at $100 or below
When I have a little more budget and can start picking up some more stuff I'll consider the B5. Thanks for the recommendation.
When are you going to test the Austrian Audio OD303 or OD505?
Have you ever used a Peavey 520TN. I'd be interested to see a video on that from you
I have not heard of or used the Peavey 520TN before. I don't think it's still made either is it?
@@Podcastage its a kick drum mic people say sounds great on voice and is compared to the sm7b. I love how interesting it looks with the grill on the back of it too. It has great room rejection accord to others. I like it because Its has the upsides of an sm7b with less of the drawbacks including it being louder so less need of a good pre amp as well as it not being as dark as the sm7b. I'm not sure if its still being manufactured but you can find some for around 90-100
It seems like V2 sounds more accurate than SM58. I use very cheap headphones, so please correct me if've heard it wrong
The V2 has more treble and sounds more open, but less smooth than the SM58. Depends on what sound you want. The v2 sounds pretty darn great.
Which of the sub $150 dynamic mics has the best handling noise rejection?
I don't have an exact answer for you there. I would need to do some testing to determine that.
@@Podcastage oooooohhh a video idea?!
That box throw was personal haha
I think it was, they're so busy trying to get me back.
Hope you would survive all box throwings till there are mics on the globe.
Hey, are you gonna try the audiotechnica GL3???
This is the first time I've heard of that. I don't have any immediate plans to cover it though.
Is the V2/V3 Gain hungry?
Alr thanks!@@Podcastage
I currently have a audio technica at2020 would it be worth getting this mic instead?
I would ask you a question in return. Why do you want to change from the AT2020? What's the issue you're trying to resolve. Does the sE V2 resolve those issues? If so, then it may make sense. But if you're looking to upgrade or make a lateral shift just for the sake of making a lateral shift/upgrade, I'd advocate against that.
Going to review the v3?
Is it 2x better than the xm8500?
Watched that box throw multiple time lol
My form is that good, isn't it? Ha.
Fantastic@@Podcastage
You should give the V3 a shot.
I will eventually give that a shot.
You do realize that fall will be Clipped, and turned into Shorts?!
😆
I will beat everyone to the punch and the title will be so bad that it will tank.
0:38 1:06 This could be the most epic moments on youtube
I'm scared to know what they are. 🙈
So the SM58 sounded surprisingly shallow, and Mackie sounded like the funkiest thing ever. I need to research EM89d some more...
edit: just looked at the Mackie review you did and holy damn you really look leagues better now
There really is a big difference between all the mics in this comparison. What a great time to be picking a mic with so many options!
I like the 50 to 16 range , 20 to 20 is a waste and just causes rumble to eq out
It's all about selecting the mic that is right for your application. Seems like you're honing in on what's important for you .Thanks for sharing Lawrence, it's great to hear.
Sounds well but I am put off by this black/ red diabolical combination of colors. Great for vampires who like to sing though! You just need a long cap and off you go...
My sleeping cap was at the cleaners so I didn't wear it while reviewing.
I liked the old “Hello Newmann” better!
Me too. I missed it.
So… what you’re saying is…i should buy this microphone 🤔
I'm not saying that. I'm saying if you like the sound of it, and the handling noise won't be an issue, then consider it because it compares pretty favorable to the other $50 mics in my opinion. Haha. Did I hedge that recommendation enough?
the v2 actually sounds better to me compared to the v7.
same the v7 has the beta 58 peakyness
That's awesome that you think that. If you're only worried about the sound of the mic you can save $50. Doesn't get much better than that.
Whats the difference between the SE V2 Switch and the SE V3?
I have not used the sE V3 so I can't speak to what the difference is unfortunately. Sorry.
