I think Mark Wallace is one of the best online teachers. Its the way he explains things. You never are left wondering what he meant.
What a beautiful model, Mark is so lucky to have Sarah, I am sure she could inspire anyone. I would love to have a model like her, I would never stop shooting.
Great video Mark, thanks.
MOISES F IZURIETA anybody..
from 2012 and still a great learning tool. thanks a lot guys. perfect video
Said it back then in the chatroom during the workshop and have to say it again: utterly gorgeous model.
Brilliant tutorial - thank you Mark & the team. Great work too Kelsey (the unsung hero of many a video!).
Mark is the best!!!
Mark Wallace, you are absolutely the best teacher.
Thank you
I finally found a video or source of info that answered my confusing questions about external flash and settings. Thank you soo much.
Hi Caleido, my objective here is not to argue but to rationally discuss in a way that may be beneficial to others. The second part of my reply about flattering light is not related to the lighting situation illustrated by Mark but is for a more general "actual use" situation. The one and only reason for the Rogue to even exist is because it is considerably more flattering in the close range shooting it is designed for.
This is really a terrific video. Some others out there discuss directional light, but this presentation goes so much further! Really like your videos. 👍
I wish I had half of your photography knowledge! Keep it coming Mark!
Gracias Mark, aprendi mucho de tus consejos. Un tutorial simplemente espectacular :D
Saludos desde Chile !!!!!!!
Fotomax Chile k..
Great Video Mark, very informative.
Very well explained and good presentation.
wonderful teacher. very detailed
Great video, mate. Really good demonstration, very clear and easy to understand.
Even thought this class was taught 2012, I am still learning from you. The way you teach the class is easy to follow. Not only that, you are from Phoenix. ::::---))) OK, that was a little cheesy.
Further, you're right in saying that you will lose light through the soft box. BUT, because the soft box is a more efficient design than simply spreading the light out to 24mm in the speedlight itself, the overall efficiency and therefore the amount of light falling on the subject; increases for a given output. The soft box approach is also better, usually, because a large light source is more flattering than a point light source which is what the speedlight alone is.
thanks so much, I'm learning a lot
Good presentation, thank's.
Hi Mark,
btw Canon Speedlite can adjust the power too, just like what u've done with the Nikon's.
just press the "SET" button in the middle of the flash, then you can adjust the power simply by roll the dial (it's adjustable from -3 up to +3)
Better learn again :D
good video, thanks, helped me understand lighting positioning much better. Cheers :)
I really thank you for uploading this on your channel, chase and team! Didnt get it on Live!
Greetings from munich
-Paul
you should try out the wing light flash diffuser works great!
excellent!!
brilliant video! love it! from England :P
learned a lot. =)) nice!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please see explanations of this below. Caleido, is forgetting that if the desire is to evenly spread a given amount of light over a large area then there are different ways of doing that. The video is comparing between a soft box with flash at 50mm to spread the light and simply setting the flash to 24mm. It is simply a matter of efficiency! If a soft box is more efficient in this situation then the video statement is correct.
Sarah is beautiful... nice choice for your model.. love her..!! :)
The softbox we are talking about (the "Rogue flash bender" @ 07:20) is not going to flatter any light whatsoever. The distance between subject and lightsource is too big and/or the surface too small, depending on how you look at it. So there is no advantage there.
Second, I'm still not conviced that the light loss from the internal wide diffuser is -always- bigger than the light loss from using the modifier. You can move your flash. The only way to see this would be by using fixed manual power.
Hey Mark Yongnuo has these triggers YN622c that use Canons ett L and HI speed sync. You should check them out!!!
Canon has flash feathering in custom settings function # 21. On the 600 ex rt and 430 ex iii rt , plus the ability to control your entire flash set-up from the cameras rear LCD screen. The ability to control ambient and flash separately(as two different exposures) flash /f.stop...ambient/shutter speed. And Canon again another first RADIO CONTOLLED FLASH with 5 groups and up to 15 flashes via radio set-up I tested and was able to fire them 500 ft in a rural setting down a gravel lane with no trees. And was able in my architecture photography light interiors and shoot from exterior even when I couldn't see the slaves. Unlimited number Via optical set-up although the distance is not even close to the radio range.
The Canon 600ex-RT has that feature as a custom function.
Mark never said the canon was unable to do flash exposure compensation, he said that nikon was able to control the light dispersion pattern. those are two different things.
There is nothing to show what video goes in what order. Great info, thanks!
This girl is beautiful:)
You dont see many women. Don't you?
what's wrong with her?
Tnx
WOOGY!!
woogy!
Not sure if it matters but the Nikon SB-910 is in TTL FP mode which is high speed sync mode. Does this matter that between regular TTL and TTL BL, about 11 minutes into the video.
thanks i realy learn alot from you
How exactly will you get 'more power' when shooting with zoomed in flash at 50mm into a small plastic soft box put on top of the flash, compared to shooting with zoomed out flash, with wide adapter out or not?
The flash is TTL based, so it will always generate the -required- power and light in order to lit the scene accordingly. It won't fire more efficiently because it is at 50mm and in a soft box. Au contraire, you will loose light through the soft box.

I know what the model is thinking about!
Hmm...
How can I use my Godox speedlight TT685n, in RPT mode, off camera as a slave, noting that I have only one unit
Mark gives some very good tipps at the cost of rude treatment to his female colleagues.
Mark, I am a BIG fan of your work. But I must admit that you are incorrect to say that NIKON cannot be tethered with. I shoot tethered with Apple Aperture, a USB Cable attached to a D300 and I can see what I am doing quite well.
id like to check out her soft box
How are you getting the image on the screen what are you using?
+JayNicole It's called Tethering look it op on youtube
I'd like to have a sarah on standby :)
Bien Mark cocacolero.
Hi - complicated!. 1st, you often need more light than a speedlight is capable of giving, so often the speedlight will be at 100% light output. You're right in saying that the camera will adjust to achieve correct exposre but that's not the point here! 2nd given that the speedlight is putting out a fixed amount of light in a given situation - the difference between the amount of light falling on the subjct between 24mm and 50mm is significant as at 24mm the light is spread over a wider area.
Sara is beautiful
he is shooting in manual mode, which most pros will do with multiple flashes.
36:24 "Ah f*ck..."
You know I can't remember a damn thing he said while Sarah was standing there.
sara like katy perry i think
Fares A.H.H dont ruin sara..
he looks like Chris Elliott :-0
Does anybody knows Sarah's full name ?
You are crippy!
just give me a a dslr and Sarah ....i will be happy all day :D
What was this video about? All I could see was the girl.
I know where Mark is coming from when speaking of increasing the contrast as the speedlight is moved around to the side. But, this is very misleading! For a given distance, the light is NOT changing in contrast at all. The shadows will still be hard - just in a different place. If I were Mark, I wouldn't talk in terms of contrast at this point. Instead I would talk in terms of direction. However, it is a fact that the contrast between the left side and right side of the face IS increased.
lol "its a Canon..its fine"
Manual or TTL camera exposure has no impact at all at the flash TTL. Your reply is irrelevant. You always have two exposures: ambient and flash. I am obviously talking about the flash, not even mentioning ambient exposure.
It is about how much power comes out of the flash to (most of the time, correctly) light up the scene. Or how much is needed. You don't save power by putting an extra diffusing element on top of your speedlight. This is just more light loss.
7:35 - 8:20 Really? I smell BS.
This guy Mark Wallace is really mean to his employes and putting Casey down, I would definitely not like to be part of his team.
I can't really listen to your explanations; next time take a less attractive girl please
R u a pervert?
oh please, get out now and then.
Very informative and good knowledge, but soooo boring.
Clearly a teaser video... no thanks
I cant find the thre previous videos so i can start from the very beginning can you help me im new to your page and youtube
