    I’m honestly more excited about this absolute gem than that two ton five million quid Bugatti Divo. Porsche Cayman is a great car but this is just so much cooler. The proper man to review one of the star cars of 2018. Brilliant as always Harry

      Marcus Hogan the Cayman used to be easily my favorite modern sports car. But when Porsche had to drop those soulful normally aspirated flat-6s for turbocharged 4-pots I lost interest. No matter how good the handling, they’re just not the same without those wonderful engines.

      David Datura yeah it’s weird alright. The Porsche four cylinder is more responsive and powerful than the Alpine’s yet is just so dull and lifeless. The Alpine’s seems gutsy and sounds quite rorty

    "Focus on the drive, and not on silly figures."
    Other car manufacturers take note, this is how you make a sports car. 0-60 means nothing. It is all about the drive. Now...give it a manual and I am sold.

    • @ianmedium
      @ianmedium 6 лет назад +15

      ChaosphereIX exactly! In the real world this car is more of a driver experience than any of the others designed with numbers in mind, such a shame no manual to make that driving experience even greater. I was a child when the original came out and loved it, this seems to be a worthy successor. It’s an LJK Setright sort of car and if your young and don’t know who he is google him and read some of his stuff and you will know what I mean.

    • @Roadjull
      @Roadjull 6 лет назад +22

      I beg to differ. Most of the driving in the real world happens on highways/autobahns and inside busy cities. In such scenarios, usually the only sports car trait that you get to enjoy is a good launch off the lights and the thing you come to hate the most is the manual gearbox.
      Weekend drives on deserted, twisty B roads are a rare treat in most of Europe.

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 6 лет назад +42

The only problem I have is that I swore to myself my next new car would be a manual as I derive so much pleasure from this part of driving. I don’t love taking the TTS for a “drive” and I put it partly down to the DSG being boring. The racing fraternity have embraced paddle shifters and on some fast cars you really don't have time to take your hands off the wheel to change gear. Follow the racers - go paddles!

    Fabulous bit of kit. Love how it looks and sounds, and love the lightweight brief. The price is punchy, though. Punchy enough that I’m going to be picky about the lack of a manual box. I alternate Caterham and Lotus and that’s no hardship, but if Alpine put a stick in this thing, I’m in. Meantime, I think Alpine might struggle a bit when the novelty wears off. Tough to pitch an expensive, stripped out, lightweight, 4 cylinder toy directly at enthusiasts who appreciate the brand’s legacy, and deny it the interaction of a manual that a decent percentage of the dedicated masochists (myself included) demand.

    I love the look of this car, especially in the blue and from the sounds of it, it drives like it should too. Given the car's lightness, I wonder if Alpine has ever considered doing an electric version as a counterpoint to the forthcoming Tesla sports car.

    • @grahambarnes7325
      @grahambarnes7325 3 года назад +1

      That's exactly what I thought, but i wondered if it would make it a lot heavier. i would love this car if I was prepared to buy a gas powered car, but I'm not. Those days are done for me. Loved the review, thanks Harry.

    • @adrianchell
      @adrianchell 3 года назад

      @@grahambarnes7325 You're absolutely right, a battery pack would add a massive amount of weight, but my thinking was that if the rest of the car was designed to be as light as possible, like the Alpine is, then you wouldn't end up with the final electric version weighing as much as a Range Rover to get decent range.

    • @grahambarnes7325
      @grahambarnes7325 3 года назад

    Alpine just got one thing wrong to me: the lack of a manual is the only reason why is off my list. Knowing that manuals are lighter than autos they could have shaved a few more kilos and rub it on Porsche whose cars keep getting heavier and heavier a result of a brand whose positioning has moved into luxsuvury (...) vehicles from what used to be previously a brand of sports cars...

    • @morecoffee998
      @morecoffee998 6 лет назад +33

      That's just not true with modern automatics, at least, that's what Alpine say. The cost of development and lack of weight saving, plus market preferences made auto-only the most sensible choice for a car with a relative small production run.

    • @MRFUCKOFF202

      drive one before you judge it. you will be surprised. I know a few people who have moved from 981s to this and love it. I had a manual 981 GTS prior to this and as much a the Cayman is a better car in almost every objective way, the Alpine is tons more involving and lots more fun.

    • @Farlig69
      @Farlig69 6 лет назад +5

      Agreed in terms of technical driving pleasure - there´s a lot to be said for the mechanical symphony of a proper manual shift, heel & toeing that when you get it all right, feels bloody wonderful. These paddle shifts are for speed yes, but there´s more to road driving than just being as fast as possible (that´s for racing) & for that, they should bring back manuals...

    This car really needs a manual gearbox option. Now I'm not one of those people who thinks manual is superior in all cars in all situations, because clearly that is nonsense, but I just prefer a manual transmission.

    • @tavirosu25
      @tavirosu25 3 года назад

      Renault does not do good manuals, I'm afraid. Even the Megane Trophy-R manual is just an ok-ish gearbox. Porsche's one is godlike. So I'd take the EDC paddles every time, since they do feel nice than a sloopy manual, just because "it's a manual bro!".

I am old enough to remember the original and saw a perfect example last year in Prince Rainer’s collection at the museum in Monte Carlo. Brilliant that there’s a genuine alternative for enthusiasts. @Baerchenization 6 лет назад

      Err.. that is EXACTLY the same effort for both cars to get to the engine from the top... maybe you wanna check out 1-2 Boxster DIY videos. And with the Porsche, you flip the seats and there is another such panel, where you can change pulleys, belt etc... air filters, you peel back the trunk carpet and there they are. For sparks plugs, you take the rear wheels off. I have not seen how this is done for the Alpine, but I imagine it will be very similar. There is no problem doing any of these jobs yourself, not that much different than with "regular" cars.
