Hoser Man , it appears to me that the gear is normal prior to launch setup but then fully extended once they are in place to catapult. But I’m not sure of the reason... angle of attack or keeping the aircraft from lurching back when catapulted? Maybe it’s just because they are British. I can respect that, too.
Hoser Man wasn’t for landing just take off when full extended don’t think had any suspension in it just to make angle of attack greater on the catapult
Stalking Horse are you really serious they always folded even for yanks by folding the nose they could get more in hanger other shorter aircraft hand folding radomes that’s how they were serviced. The buccaneers had folding tails too.... I was on the ark royal in early 70s .... don’t know if you noticed wings fold toooo and rotors on helicopters
Cool vid.. thanks from NZ 🇳🇿👍

Why did they pul longer front landing gears on the Phantoms? That is not normal.

Angle of attach and so that the phamntoms could get of the ark due to its short catapult

5:07 It looks like the Phantoms were too long for the Ark Royal's elevators. Note that the nose is folded to one side.
