  • In this weeks video, we find ourselves in a sticky situation with the DREADED d.e.s.s battery failure.
    After its pampering session down at ROYAL DETAILS i came back to the car completely dead.
    It was only a matter of time and things COULD have been worse... BUT, we move forward, and in doing so i have a go at replacing the over complicated unit myself!

    I thought on the rensport uk forums they mentioned on first starting the new battery, you need to drive a few metres and all the settings would reconfigure.
    Have also heard here in Aus that a larger 50aH battery can be swapped out for oem 19ah. Thanks fr the video, am currently a 300t owner…. So keen to see this

    Just re[place with an standard EF or AGM battery like fitted to the non Trophy RS Meganes. Can't remember why they fitted to DESS battery to the Trophy, but I'm sure there'll be some waffle in the original bumpf somewhere.

  • @rowanlewisuk
    @rowanlewisuk 2 года назад +1

    Basically the battery is a lightweight race battery. Its got 19ah of capacity which is tiny. Usually they are about 90ah. Rather than redesign the whole battery tray renault just fit the lightweight battery in that enclosure so it fits straight in.

  • @steveh3204
    @steveh3204 2 года назад +1

    The other half of the DESS case is full of ultra capacitors. It is designed to be light weight but this battery is unique to Renault and the Meg and not typical of modern ICE cars
    Mine was fine, never had an issue however I knew that the Trophy had a lower capacity battery to that of a normal battery (19ah in the DESS vs 50ah in a normal car) so I just adjusted my behavior around it accordingly. Some people dont realise what they have and as such this is where problems start. Due to their lower capacity when they start to fail, they fail quick, generally after a heavy discharge. Of curse, there are some issues knocking around as well.
    I also belive some people use the wrong size chargers on these. The handbook states no more than 4amp hr charger should be used otherwise the charge rate becomes too much and buckles the lead acid battery.
    When mine failed, it was perfectly fine the day before, no issues starting but then the first cold snap and it refused to take any charge. Thankfully I always carry my jump pack permanently in the boot!
    There is some suggestions that an EFB or AMG battery can also be fitted, but Renault UK do not recommend but give no explanation as to why other than the 'regenerative' braking setup.

      @VersionOneUK  2 года назад

      Yeah its strange mate isn't it!? Mine had no issues at all but like i mentioned in the vid i think where mine was in the body shop for a month barely ran that was the start of the failures.

      @@VersionOneUK it gave up the ghost being washed, I didn't turn off the auto lock and as I was moving round the car it was constantly locking and unlocking which drained the battery, I couldn't get it to start for love nor money! I'd only had it a week and she was only 6 months old, the dealer I bought it from (DT Performance) went to London from the Midlands to buy a battery and brought it to me and fitted it the same day, this was during lockdown and as I was a key worker, he wouldn't allow Renault to have the car taken to London to be fixed. I think the first owner bought it, drove it for a few hundred miles and left it in the garage doing nothing for 5 months, seems when they go dead they never recover! It went dead again randomly on the second battery but I'd already decided by then it was time to move on, I think I went through 3 pairs of front tires and 2 rear in 13k miles, so it was an expensive habit! 🤣 I'm the guy that bought your panel filter off of you, I think it's still in the shoebox you sent it in in my shed, I sold it about a week after you sent it. My Trophy battrery gave up. Took it to Renault for repair. They say warrenty will cover 50% of the cost leaving me with £120 bill for replacement battery. Replacement battery didnt fix the issue according to renault and the issue was "more technical then anticipated" They have had the car two weeks now, only just fixed it so not sure what the problem is as i'm yet to pick it back up.
    I was also told that it was a known fault on the MK4 and i should go to halfords and buy and keep a battery recharge pack. Renault wanted £230+ for one off them. Kind of embarrasing that a flagship performance car has an issue where the manufacturer has told me to go to halfords as a temporary solution to the problem happening again.
    I had the car at 8000Miles. 19k the fuel pump went and i was left stranded on a cross roads no power nothing. Had to go back to Renault, was fixed under warrenty. 24k current mileage and battery has died. Probably started flagging low battery at approx 21k? I had noticed not long after purchase if the car radio was on (no engine) it would do a 15min cycle and flag battery low turn on engine. Not sure if this was normal behaviour?

      @@VersionOneUK Odd update from Renault. They had to replace a 12v Capacitor in the battery to get it to start working again. apparently they had limited options as waiting for stock of batteries was crazy lead times. To make things worse have also found out that between the capacitors is some type of fuse component (im not technical on this so apologies) apparently if this blows renault have no stocks and cant get the parts any more because it is completely discontinued. At first they thought this had happened to mine and there at a loss as to how going forward they can replace/fix these with the parts not being available.
      The trickle charge pack was recommened to me in the event i dont drive the car day in day out. To prevent charge being lost when not in use.
      They also honoured full cost of the replacement when i argued about it being a known defect. Had to play my face a little but at least its been honoured as they dont cover batteries under any warrentys
