I actually grew up on these streets when i was 16 and learned how to survive downtown and many friends that were there with me are now no longer alive or around!!! I miss them all!!! But i managed to leave that place many many years ago!!!! Its so sad to see what this place has become and the constant changes its gone through!!!!! I remember the Balmoral bar was one such hang out i used to drink at !!! Same with Brandys across the street!!! Im so glad imnot down there anymore i live a cleaner life NOW!! I pray for all the people's that are and were down there it really does a number on my heart to see what this place has become from when i was young!!!? I actually blame you know who (JT) the government was supposed to be helping people and they are the ones who caused this that to me is not considered helping humanity that to me is considered abandonment!!! And thats a lot of people to ABANDON!!!!! I always worry about what is going to happen when winter sets in who will survive where will they go !?? Is there a place for them to go!??? It isnt the same as when i was down THERE!??? I pray for you all and thatyou make it safe and sound!!!!!!?? Take care brothers and sisters!!!!

grew up in the 60s, that same stretch with my friends on friday night once a month when we had a buck or two. Haircut for like 10c at Molar's barber school, then a 3 course dinner at the White lunch for around 50c, and catch a double feature at the Lux theatre for 2 bits. While it was always a lower class part of town back then, the worst we got was getting chased by the occasional wino, but junkies back then were not the norm.

why is it always the east side??? Why dont the builders of cities not make an east side and then you wont have any trouble? Did anyone ever think about that??? Its the east side in every city and every crime detective show on t.v. They always start the show by talking about the east side. You would think that someone would have clued in to this years ago.

Great observation. As far as I know, your observation stands what I personally seen in every big city I went to. I have never been able to explain this. phenomenon

I spend time in Vancouver once or twice per year and in case anyone doesn't know, this has been Hastings for decades. Nothing new or unusual compared to any other city.
Other than some addicts loitering in Chinatown, Vancouver and its surrounding areas are absolutely beautiful.

It's not true anymore. It is spreading all over east Van.

I live here all year, and sadly, it's spreading beyond this one area, actually. There are tent cities popping up everywhere on the outskirts and in smaller towns, too.

So what. At the same time all levels of government are aiding & begetting homelessness by throwing these people out on the street. It's degusting!!

Probably a body cam. Openly filming with a phone would be a bad idea.

It's crazy when people complain about such a great city because it has homeless.. if edmonton didn't have such winters, there would be just as many.

This is in Vancouver, British Columbia, and NOT a representation of "Life in Canada". Every nation has homelessness and often times drug addiction issues. British Columbia tried very liberal ideas to try and cope with the problem with very mixed results; debates about effectiveness are ongoing. It is sad to see.

Dogs are great companions anywhere they are with you and most homeless people will feed their dog before themselves, don.t judge!

@@danopeters5190 No doubt. But this area is chaos and full of addiction and pain. Dogs pick up on that and homeless people are different from addicts I know.

Calling Hastings street 'Real Canada' is an insult to Canadians. It is indeed one of the worst places in Canada...maybe one of the worst in NA, but calling it 'Real Canada'? It is one street in Canada and you have multiple videos depicting Canada in this disgusting way...shame on you.

Very interesting to point out that camera operator was never disturbed by any of the so-called dangerous fellows around, all drugged up. Next vid, please walk along Cornwall & Yew to Macdonald, in Point Grey, where the houses start at 8 million so that the average viewer who does not really know Vancouver can get an idea of an average, not just what YOU want them to see otherwise it's ignorance spreading ignorance.

@scratchcratch Right! I see a lot of comments saying it's only a couple of blocks in this area, which is not true anymore. I currently live in east Van and believe it's getting there. A lots of peoples I know have moved from Vancouver and many other are thinking leaving. I'm one of them, sad.
