『Romeo and Juliet』

The play, depicting the outcome of a man’s racing, intense affair of just five days, with its rivalries and the spreading of infectious diseases, is directly linked to today’s society as we are experiencing it. In London in the 1590s, when it is said Shakespeare wrote this piece, the plague, an infectious disease with a very high fatality rate, was spreading and people were doomed to live in discomfort. As theaters were forced to close as a preventative measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, so were they closed in Shakespeare’s time. What was the playwright’s dream for his work in such a time? Now, precisely because of the times we live in, we may be able to unravel Shakespeare’s thoughts.
