    That's wild! So it's measuring based on how far the neck of the wrench is bending under stress! I was trying to figure out how the heck these old school torque wrenches work, but now I get it. Thanks! Didn't realize they bent that much

    Great information. I'm torquing the rear axle shaft nuts to a Model T Ford this afternoon, and I wanted to make sure I had it all straight. Beautiful torque wrench by the way. German made Elora tools are some of the best in the world.

    I have worked in a calibration lab. The early digital torque wrenches were crap and and we failed 50% of them. The mechanical were then most common with 10% of them suffering from an out of scale condition when the spring fails from fatigue. Of the few beams we received, they were all good to go. Good simple video!

    Some people don’t realize how important a torque wrench is, especially on things like spark plugs. 18 foot pounds torque On your average four-cylinder engine, any less and it could cause a misfire. Many problems arise from misfires from improperly installed spark plugs. This torque wrench is pretty accurate, I use one every day. Good video, easy to understand.

    The beam torque wrench was invented by Walter Percy Chrysler. What do you think the NASA engineers used on the Apollo 11? Clicks hadn't been invented yet. People who talk against beams don't really know anything about torque, but rather they just ate up all the corporate propaganda being spread by snap-on and friends, who want to sell you a $300 wrench that does the same job as a $20 wrench. BTW, beams never need to be re-calibrated. WW2 was won using machines torqued with beams. Think about it.

      Thanks for sharing this info. Used click type torque wrenches mostly but I just realized I also had this beam type torque wrench laying in storage but just had no idea how to use it. It's good to have choices when you have it with accuracy in mind.

    Just bought a 1/2" beam style torque wrench. I have all the other wrenches and sockets I need, but a torque wrench is new to me. Expensive click, electronic or professional grade wrenches are all fine and good for those who use them frequently, but all I need to do is torque four bolts on a 2" trailer hitch on my vehicle. Thank you for the quick tutorial.

    I like these style torque wrenches, because most use measurements they show both pounds and Newton meters. Plus, you can feel the tightness more than a click style torque wrench

  • @wcjcnc
    @wcjcnc 10 лет назад +8

    Click type torque wrenches are not better. They may be easier to use when you're working on an engine that's still in the car or truck because you don't have to look at a scale on the end of the wrench. If you're working on something easy to get around a beam or needle type torque wrench is just as good. You also don't need to recalibrate the beam type every year and you don't have to worry about "backing them up" after each use. Neither wrench is better than the other. One is more expensive than the other and one needs regular testing and recalibrating but they both work fine.

  • @MrShobar

    You don't tighten to achive "pressure". You torque a screw to achieve a desired preload in th screw. The preload (a force) is inferred from the torque value read from the scale on the tool.

    I just found out the hard way that not torquing down my transmission pan bolts, let's all of the expensive atf+4 fluid to leak out. So I get to do it again. Round #1, is 80 ft pounds, then round #2 is 120ft pounds around again. It just seem like I was going to strip them out, or twist the heads off. And because one of the bolts was a 13mm. And there all sapos to be 10mm. Thanks for showing me. I've got the same one you do..

    my dad bought a beam torque wrench in the seventies for doing a head gasket change on his car and ive still got it as some parts on bicycles have to be torqued up
    the torque wrench still works ok its a bit battered and bruised with age but its an ivaluable tool to have especially for tightening the nut on cotterless cranks which can work loose if not tightened properly

    how often do you have to calibrate?

    • @yagousera
      @yagousera 6 лет назад +1

      Nomon Munir - These type of torque wrench can not be calibrated. If the needle is off you have to pull the beam it in the opposite direction and hope it falls back to "0". Some have a plastic pointer on the end that you twist to to set it to zero. Now "Click Type" you usually have it calibrated if it falls or you use it every day, but for the "Weekend Mechanic" just reset it back to Zero and it usually doesn't need professional calibration.
