BCS Power Harrow and PDR Comparison

  • Final bed preparation involves loosening the top two inches of soil so that young roots can quickly expand into the surrounding soil. Two factors are of critical importance: (1) to not go too deep, thereby preserving soil structure; and (2) to gently firm the surface in order to establish the good seed-to-soil contact needed for germination. This video compares the two BCS attachments, the Power Harrow and the Precision Depth Roller, that accomplish final bed prep both efficiently and with ease.

    I love my BCS. It was a complete game-changer in terms of work output and enjoyment. I look forward to every time I can fire it up. Glad to see that the new metal side plates on the Power Harrow are made by Thievierge in Quebec. He’s a great guy and innovator.

    Great idea on the PDR, that would be a lot cheaper and easier to obtain than the power harrow, I have a Rinaldi R2 power harrow and it works great. I still have questions as to the merits of a complete no-till approach. And I think a lot of that has to do with soil types. I am broad forking beds and using the power harrow this year. It just seems to me that good tilth makes for easier root penetration. Also, I am not convinced that the microbes in the soil will not regenerate with the short life span that most of them have anyway.

    I have a BCS 735 with the ACME engine. My father put in in storage years ago (drained the gas, fogged the cylinder) when they couldn't grow a garden in the Ca desert due to water shortage/price. Has the roto-tiller and plow attachments. It just sits in my garage here in Wa. It was very little used and Like new condition.

    Does the use of axle extensions so the tractor can straddle the beds to reduce compaction affect the power harrows depth control and angle of "attack" on the bed?

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  6 лет назад +2

      If you're dealing with flat beds, having the wheels out in the walkways shouldn't make any difference. Straddling a raised bed would lead to different results. You'd likely need to increase the tire/wheel size in order to increase the ground clearance. Give us a call if you'd like to talk tractors. 1-800-543-1040.

    • @johncraftenworth7847
      @johncraftenworth7847 6 лет назад +3

      the standard tires on the bcs 853 can handle most raised beds of reasonable/practical soil depth. If you the tires aren't tall enough, you're building the beds too high which is a waste of effort/unnecessary.

    • @zackscott8636
      @zackscott8636 5 лет назад +1

      Standard tires allow for 30" bed staddling at 6" high?

  • @johncraftenworth7847
    @johncraftenworth7847 6 лет назад +3

    IMO, the power harrow reigns supreme! This attachment for the tiller is a great idea but the price is too high, for the price of tiller and roller you may as well buy the power harrow, which is the superior implement for bed prep and soil preservation. Of course a tiller is handy to have if you want to work in compost and fertilizer down to the root level of plants, so there is something to be said for the tiller/roller combo.

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comment, John. The PDR isn't meant to replace the Harrow, just provide another option for folks at a lower price point. If you already have the Tiller, the PDR accessory is available for less than half of the cost of the Harrow. Thanks for watching!

    • @PeterSedesse
      @PeterSedesse 2 года назад

      Yeah, I don't think there is a right answer. I was actually thinking the exact opposite of you though. For breaking in new land, the tiller is very useful, so if you already have it for that, adding the roller is cheaper.

    The PDR does a much better job of keeping soil on the bed and not in the rows. It's really no comparison. As far as the firmness of the beds, sure the Power Harrow makes firmer beds but both are fine. The PDR with it's dual use as a tiller is my choice.

    How does the BCS PDR do in rocky soil?

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  3 года назад

      The roller allows you to precisely set the depth, so you can work as shallow as you like. We find this helpful in very rocky soil as you can start shallow and figure out what type of rocks/debris you're dealing with before going deeper. In general, rocky soil isn't much of a challenge for BCS tillers.

    It is impossible to purchase it in Europe, the import and shipping costs are crazy and I think that BCS America does not plan to send some to Italy in the near future. BCS America is not BCS Italy. Am I wrong? I tried to buy it from a dealer in US and the final price was like the Power Harrow here in Europe. Any solution? Thanks

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  6 лет назад

      Hi there! You're correct, BCS America is not the same as BCS Italy, although all tractors and most attachments are made by BCS Italy and exported to North America. The Power Harrow in this video is made in Canada and currently only sold in North America. With the price of shipping cost and duties, it is probably most cost effective for you to purchase a different brand of Power Harrow that is made in Europe. Thanks and good luck!

    Would it be practical to till up a strip and then run the raised bed plough, (0:30 frame,). There'd be some compaction but wouldn't that give you a much deeper growing bed for root crops? Just curious. Perhaps I misunderstood the process.

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Wayne! That could work if the soil hasn't been worked already. The Rotary Plow is the most effective BCS method to break new ground at a deeper depth without over-pulverizing the soil. The downside is that the Rotary Plow is only 10'' wide rather than 30'' on the PDR. The typical process is 1) Initial tillage with the tiller or Rotary Plow; 2) Build raised beds with the Plow; 3) After letting the beds settle for a period of time, add compost / amendments and smooth out the Raised Beds with the PDR or Power Harrow. If the ground has been worked previously, the first step can be skipped, but everyone has different soil and different needs/preferences. Hope this helps!

    • @waynetadlock9719

      Absolutely, and thank you.

  • @jasonhatfield4747

    Why not just till the field once with a typical rotary tiller? Why go to the trouble of buying a rotary plow and a power harrow when one or two passes with a standard tiller will produce the same results? I'm not talking about tilling all the time, just the initial ground breaking

    • @BCSAmerica
      @BCSAmerica  Год назад

      Because the Tiller and Rotary Plow don't produce the same results at all.
      The Rotary Plow chunks the soil and throws it to the right. This allows you to open a furrow, and with successive passes, build a raised bed. If you're not using it to build a raised bed, it still provides better initial ground breaking than the Tiller as it doesn't pulverize the soil as much and doesn't create a hard pan below the Tiller tines. It also goes deeper (12" vs. 8") than the Tiller.
      Two completely different tools!

      Not relevant. The handlebars of BCS tractors are reversible - they swing 180º. The tread pattern of the tire should be installed in the direction that you most frequently use the tractor (in the case of this owner, the tractor is primarily used as a mower with the handlebars over the engine).
