Just a tip: this stuff comes with a straight top. So you only have to line the top edge of the tank with the tint and cut off the bottom. This way, all mistakes will be hidden under the substrate
I kept wondering "what's that white stuff in your hallway?" Then it occurred to me that I was not looking at a hallway, that was a window and the white stuff was snow. I'm still new to snow.
I just went to the local dollar store, and I picked up their 1/8" styrofoam core bristle board. They had a few different colours to choose from. The sheet is a decent size. The black one I got can easily fit on the back of a 30g tank. I think some people use these boards for making tri-fold science fair displays. Anyway, after cutting it to the right size with an X-Acto blade, I used some clear packing tape to attach it to the back of the tank. Total cost, $1.
Rabbitgoo products are so great!! Inexpensive, and they have LOTS of patterns! I never thought of using it on a fishtank, but that's wicked smart! I have some frosted bamboo pattern left over from my bathroom.... I think it'll be on my ten gallon soon!
I prefer the static cling backgrounds they sell, the simple ones that only have greenish blue going to brighter true blue. Looks natural and more uplifting than black in my opinion.
I used to use brown paper from shopping bags to cover the backs and sides of my tanks. I thought it looked understated to the point of invisibility. Most people never noticed.
Thanks for passing this great life hack along to us. If they're all going to be next to each other, you only needed to black out one of the long sides... the black side of the tank next to it will take care of that for you.

Basically the same thing but I ended up using a chalkboard self adhesive lining from Amazon. Liked the flat black look it gave to the back and was super easy to install.

Line the factory straight edge of the window film up with the top of the tank. Then if you mess up a little trimming along the bottom, you can often cover up your mistake with your substrate along the bottom back edge of the tank

Hey you should use plasti dip. It’s literally rubber in spray so inert. Also it’s only 20 min dry time. Few coats does it. Also you can use it on things inside aquariums like intake pipes etc.
Howdy , my 55 Gal fish tank is 20 in High , will this tint work with it ? If not what’s a comparable product that works ...and given you painted in the past , is it better looking to use the tinted film vs painting ? I appreciate it
@@tic857 That's a good idea. The problem with poster board is that it gets ruined if it gets too wet. It is super cheap to replace, but can be a hassle. Shelf liner would be a lot more water resistant.
@@garnetmoon3485 yep! That's why I use it. I usually have my tanks on top of some liner anyway to protect my table and some to dampen my airpump so using the left overs for the back is nice. Water resistant and you can wipe it clean. Down side is that it doesn't stick fully on like the window cling but it does "stick" somewhat.
Hey Simply Betta! I have a 10 gallon tank with a betta, panda cory, 3 neon tetras, a guppy, lemon BN pleco, and some snails. (sounds like a lot 😂 ). The water suddenly turned a little cloudy but the fish were totally fine. Was it an ammonia spike or a bacterial bloom? I'd like to hear from you. Thank you!!! (I got the tank just recently)
I have used black contact paper for like shelves works good too and if you paint i use heat gun to dry so you can paint again faster works really well done it for multiple tanks and large tanks too
Sounds like a great way to black out tanks. I’ve been scraping off my black paint and doing reverse painting to create scenes of plants/rocks/branches/water on the backs of my tanks. I like it and it’s just another creative outlet. Of course, my tanks are display tanks, not breeding/grow out tanks. I’ve been there with the braces. Surgery on both hands later, no more braces. :)
Reverse painting on the back sounds fun! Ugh, what was the issue with your hands? I swear if I can't get rid of this with rest/physiotherapy , I'll look into it

My hands are weaker and sometimes cramp up due to the damage done by the carpal tunnel syndrome, but it’s nothing compared to the excruciating nerve pain I was experiencing.. It’s been a few years and I have no regrets about having the surgeries.

I personally enjoy painting the black backs with simple brushes. It’s a therapeutic and relaxing process. That’s just me though. Painting is a hobby of mine so I guess I’m prone to it
I like it too, it's also way less expensive than a black cling film and easier to have on hand! The cling film is the easiest cleanup ever, though, if you want to remove it. I guess there are pros and cons : )
I used Rabbit Goo on a 90 Gallon and I painted a 20 Gallon, I prefer paint. It looks nicer (used flat black) and also the hoses accidentally loosened my Rabbit Goo so that now it isn’t flush on the glass anymore, but the tank is in place and I’d have to empty it to move the tank and re-apply, vs just using a small roller and doing a quick touch up.
I think it might be a stretch to call it “tint” ... that’s textured black vinyl basically! I’m guessing it’s possible to buy black vinyl cheaper? Probably thinner material and more difficult to apply, because I’ve applied a lot of vinyl, and what you used looked easy as heck!
I have no idea! Haha, it's not transparent at all, and I think the rabbitgoo company does a lot of frosted and mosaic applications too but not this one. Maybe it would be considered vinyl
Just a thought... I don't know how the "scraps" of film are but you can always use several smaller pieces in the bottom to cover because they wouldn't show like on the sides....
Build a clip-on detachable deep box for the back which is black by default, but also incorporates diffused lighting in a variety of colors. Use a computer (you can do it with timers and with solid color lights, too, calibrated for brightness, if you wish to go the analog route) to modulate the lighting and time everything out. The back lighting balances out with the main overhead lighting on the tank. During the day, it can be black. At night, you can have the box backlight the tank. Aquascape the tank with decor using the rule of thirds (compositional design layout), and with objects with strong shapes which silhouette against the backlighting, and are accented by the overhead main lighting. That would give you a stunning tank which is modular and scalable.
STOP giving me ideas!! This is hilarious, because I've often thought about how I can mimic the look of the ADA illuminated backgrounds and the idea of an LED-filled box with a diffuser plate and a printed blue gradient might totally be the ticket. I wish I had the time for more projects T_T

I'll rapid prototype some cost-effective, time-efficient. modular, scalable light boxes and will send you the blueprints for you to reverse-engineer, tweak, and build. It may take a while, but I'll do it when I get it done.
To help make that easier you can use more soapy water and lay the back of the tint on the tank. Trim it to size, the peel off the clear sheet and put more soapy water on the tank and flip it over! That way it’s easier than fighting with the adhesive side and possibly getting dust under the film. This is my go to as it’s easy to remove is I want to change it.

Hello came across your video I have a reptile a bearded dragon would doing the back,sides,and bottom on my 40gal tank eliminate reflection? My tank has thick glass idk if this will stop him from glass surfing and stressing him out.
My copper betta sees his reflection in the tank and is constantly swimming against the glass. Any suggestions on how to stop that ? Please any advice would be much appreciated
Is the reason you put the tanks with the short side facing the front, so you can have more tanks width wise? I have 2 next to eachother long ways cause i love seeing them glide along the glass. But i also wish i could fit more on my stand haha

The 6 gallon tank that i got at petco one time (still using it to this day) came already with the blackout back wall. I definitely like it, but apparently my betta fish over the course of time does not😅 he can see his reflection and flares at himself. Had to put in plants, and block out above water lighting to make his reflection not so noticeable for him.
I see a new tank & I want to paint it black.... If you can find gloves big enough to fit over the casts, you can actually cut out the fingers & end up with those straps restricted for when you're doing these types of projects that require a lot of finger work. Also, that first strip could have been flipped upside down so the uneven part wouldn't haunt you... I know, late right?🤦🏾♂️ Still, I think you did a great job! I’ve tried this but it’s too bad it’s reflective on the inside and the Bettas will drive themselves nuts seeing their own reflection. I wish someone made a film that is matte on both sides.

Hi Suzy! With vinyl, if you get a bubble, you can gently slice a small line and the bubble goes away.

The 6 gallon tank that i got at petco one time (still using it to this day) came already with the blackout back wall. I definitely like it, but apparently my betta fish over the course of time does not😅 he can see his reflection and flares at himself. Had to put in plants, and block out above water lighting to make his reflection not so noticeable for him.
I saw this method a few years ago on King of DIY. Used same brand but a different pattern. Still on today.
I bought a piece made for aquarium, it was a cluster.... that material looks so much better to work with.......ended up using plastidip spray can

Would you recommend this method on a larger (75gal) tank or do you think it would be too difficult to deal with at that size?

If you can find gloves big enough to fit over the casts, you can actually cut out the fingers & end up with those straps restricted for when you're doing these types of projects that require a lot of finger work. Also, that first strip could have been flipped upside down so the uneven part wouldn't haunt you... I know, late right?🤦🏾♂️ Still, I think you did a great job! What you know about that Fish Nerd life?😏

I’ve tried this but it’s too bad it’s reflective on the inside and the Bettas will drive themselves nuts seeing their own reflection. I wish someone made a film that is matte on both sides.
