A guide to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard:
before 2015: psych
2015: folk rock
2016: heavy psych
2017: microtonal rock, an audiobook, jazz rock, prog, and whatever the hell gumboot soup is
2018: a year-long cover of 4’33
2019: boogie rock, thrash metal
2020: nu metal, mumble rap, vaporwave
2021: rock in opposition, zeuhl, third wave ska
2022: unblack metal, serialism, shoegaze, crabcore,
2023: k-pop, reggae
2024: punk goes pop vol. 8
2025: ambient gospel
2026: the band transcends into a superior plane of existence and rule us from above as our divine overlords
Jaafar Idrissi I think they would actually kill a zeuhl album
let the overlords rule over us
a gizzy shoegaze album actually sounds sick
Given the rate of speed and quality of the albums they've released so far I find it hard to believe it would take them till 2026 to transcend to divinity. I would give them around 2023 at the very latest.
don't forget the garage rock days
We NEED a KEXP session for PetroDragonic Apocalypse! PLEASE! Its Infest The Rats Nest on heavy octane!

Reminds me of claypool
I love that they have 3 guitarists and 2 drummers and they managed to fit some kick ass bass solos in their thrash metal album, incredible
Well, I think it's because they recorded this mainly as a trio (Stu, Cavs and Joey), so bass had a bit more leadership through Joey.
It's a fantastic album, the bass drives most songs so it's nice to see it get a bit more of the limelight. In my opinion it always lifts a song when the bass had its own thing rather than doubling the guitars.
@@AndresinhoRM sure but dude, listen to how lucas deserve the shit ! he's incredible ! don't say much, always smiles, steady like a metronome !
@@morrron5 I totally agree, man, Lucas is great. I was just saying Bass may have not been a protagonist in ITRS if Lucas would've played it, which I feel would've been unfair, obviously. Maybe I'm wrong, it's just a thought. Anyway, let's just enjoy King Gizzard and their amazing music.

@@caammm88 Cav too. They recorded the album between the 3 of them, and it's obvious that they are the (only ?) metalheads in the band.
I wish the host asked the rest of the band if they actually like metal ahah
at this point, they might as well have a permanent room in the KEXP studio
I love how Stu describes his metalhead years as "It was the first time that I said I LOVE music". I believe that metal is the most important milestone for many people who have more than an average interest in music, like Stu. Thanks to metal, I've discovered so many more amazing genres and became an amateur musician myself. I'm still a metalhead, but like Stu, many people that I knew from my metalhead circle also got into different genres and are now important jazz/blues musicians, producers, DJs, sound engineers etc. And they all owe this to their metal years, because they picked a real instrument after air guitaring or drumming to their favorite metal songs. I'm sad that metal is looked down upon by many, and it's nice to see bands like King Gizz are paying their respects.
What a fantastic comment, couldn't agree more!
Fully agreed. I started really getting into my favorite types of music due to my interest in metal.
Metal was my introduction into anything other than "radio" music. I've become a fan of so many sub-genres of metal and other genres outside of metal through my expeierinces listening to metal, attending different metal shows, and getting recommendations from other metal heads. It seems the metal community has the broadest range of music styles and tastes out of any musical community I've been a part of. Metal can be incorporated into any genre, and through that I've found a love for so much music if I didn't find a metal band throwing a heavy twist on that genre.
Metal is where I started, and now I am a fan of pretty much every genre of music. The only one I don't really like is country. KGLW is a musicians band, they don't just play a little bit of every genre, they are masters of them!
Billy Strings!
I'm jealous of Cheryl, she literally has the privilege of being present in front of some cool ass bands
Best job of all time.

Yep i think lucas plays it slightly different
Lucas has a wife and kids so I think he stepped back a little while they recorded the album
That solo is incredible
They look so humble and shy in interviews, like a group of kids presenting their year project in front of the class .. and on the other hand, you have their lives performances .. :')

I like how Stu is a mastermind but Joey, Ambrose, and Cook are capable of writing for the group, there is still soo much more that they can do, just unbelievable work ethic lol, at the end of the day I think it's their dedication to what they're doing, that passion is what is making them such a great band. I think Flightless is a gold mine too
hippiecheezburger yes I just love how each and everyone of them are dedicated and extremely important to the band in their own sense. It’s not often that each member of a 7 piece band ends up being necessary to the group. Also as you touched on it’s also really amazing that they also have 4 different writers that all write equally great material wether that be in or out of king gizzard. Fucking love this band

Underrated comment
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much talent squeezed into a room. To play music like that so tight is really hard work.
I’m annoyed at the way the music press has labelled this album as a bit of a mess around. To say it’s a kind of thrash throwback album really doesn’t do it justice at all.
It really is a work of art, it’s like prog thrash like Master of Puppets and Lateralus mixed together. It’s a really deep collection of music it really is.
tool sucky sucky
Sounds better live than on the album. Something about the way it was recorded. Maybe it's smashed to far on a limiter. Or the vocal tracks sound almost the same between tracks. I don't know exactly what it is.
100% this album goes as deep as Mind Fuzz, Nonagon, and Poly. It’s way more forward thinking that what it’s being given credit for, EVEN by king gizzard standards
llewodcm20 it sounds better live because live it’s with all 7 members. Most of the album was recorded with only Cavs Stu and Joey

Its like they predicted corona. Had a song about a superbug and planned to take a year off in 2020.... they must be some kind of wizards... some say the king gizzard kind

Jesus these men are so talented. The drummers played the intense setlist so effortlessly, the bass lines are fire as hell, the subtle hints of harmonica and synths mixed underneath for added ambiance, and the chaotic guitar riffs with excellent tones. It never ceases to amaze me how the band combines everything into one extravagant performance. I fucking love this band 🔥🔥
So is this like psicodelic thrash metal? love the vibe, just awesome
Yes
i think they sort of defy categorization.
New to this band and I'm amazed. I almost saw them live in 2016 during the "hot wax" period and they sounded nothing like this. If they had, I would have gone. But I still regret not going, I just didn't get it back then. Now I'm just going thought their catalogue and I'm beginning to understand. They play whatever the hell they want, it's pure unbiased love of music.
I went to their show a couple years ago and my friend busted his lip because the moshing was crazy. We had to duck out and walk to the hospital a few blocks away to get him stitched up. Hopefully next time I can catch a full show!
