  • BABYMETAL is a JOKE....is this really true, or are they just hated on by elitist metalheads? In order to get to the bottom of this controversy, we'll be watching a live peformance of Babymetal's, "Akatsuki", live at the famous Budokan arena in Tokyo, Japan
Babymetal is a Japanese kawaii metal band consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal" and Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal". The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. The real question is this....Can they win us over, or will they be consumed by the fires of judgement? Muhahaha

There are thousands of those bands, there is only one Babymetal, that was the whole point in their existence. Something like Babymetal would never exist if it was just left to the typical "dudes/girls" randomly forming a band from scratch. You can't build a modern Formula 1 team as DIY project with some buddies... Some things can only exist in specific ways... So regardless of personal taste, the way Babymetal exists and is managed is not a valid point of criticism.

The backing band.. known as the Kami Band is a team up of some of the best session musicians in Japan. BabyMetal & their fanbase absolutely love the Kami Band. Kami has stated in the past they are grateful for BabyMetal taking them to worldwide venues that they might never have performed in. At this point, one can’t separate the BabyMetal from the Kami Band. They are One. The crowds cheer whenever the Kami perform their intros before a BabyMetal song.
As BabyMetal, they are who they are. They didn’t necessarily try to market themselves outside Japan, as most Japanese artists stick to Japan-only market (2nd largest music market in the world). They’ve been mocked & insulted for who they are. Even during live music awards shows. Thru it all, the girls never were toxic. Hoping their music can continue to improve & gain acceptance. Legendary bands & artists… like Metallic, Korn, RHCP, BMTH, etc have become fans of BabyMetal. They’ve created their own genre of music. Unique among many.
Saying that, BabyMetal isn’t for everyone. Metal purists will continue to mock them. Insult them. But they will continue to be BabyMetal. They won’t change who they are. Appreciative of the millions of fans around the world.

Babymetal are very misunderstood because they come from a very different musical culture and way of doing things to what metal fans are used to. I used to be one of the metal snobs that dismissed Babymetal as a manufactured gimmick act, but when I looked into them more, I was surprised at how musically diverse they are, and how incredible their live performances are. Although they come from the Japanese j-pop "idol" culture, they have very much charted their own path from when they began as a side project of the idol group Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal was never expected to become the success it did, and far exceeded anyone's expectations. I attribute their success to them doing something that no-one has ever seen before, and doing it incredibly well. The fact that they are still going strong after 12 years is a testament to the fact that they found a niche that clicked with people.
The big barrier to understanding them is that a lot of people view them through the same lens as they would any normal metal band; a bunch of musicians writing songs, recording them, and then touring around playing on stage. While Babymetal do most of those things too, Babymetal is also a whole theatrical production, as well as having its own lore and ongoing narrative and assorted connected media. I describe them as "heavy metal as performance art". The key to appreciating them is to toss aside all of your preconceptions about what a "metal band" is and see that Babymetal is coming at heavy metal from a completely different direction with their own understanding of what heavy metal is. They're an avant-garde art metal project that defies all the established conventions of what metal should look like, and that's what makes them so fun; they're unlike anything else.

@@MadassAlex I'm well aware of that. I was talking about the idol part of the music industry, which doesn't really have a direct equivalent in the west. Babymetal are an idol group that does metal; the misunderstanding comes from people not knowing how idol works, not that Japanese metal is inherently different to other metal simply by virtue of being Japanese. There are plenty of successful Japanese metal bands doing it the "normal" way, and they don't get the pushback that Babymetal has. BM are the odd ones out because they are so firmly rooted in idol culture, which leads to a lot of misconceptions about them.

Babymetal and The Kami Band are what they are...they are highly produced, choreographed and talented. BM is definitely a polished product created by Amuse and their producer Kei Kobayashi and there's no pretense at it being anything else. The girls and the band are performers and the result is part way between a rock concert and a Broadway show. It's definitely a different take on "metal" as it isn't Ozzie screaming into a mic in some Black Country pub, so the measuring stick is different. As far as commitment and hard work BM compare with any band, but they do have the songs written for them so it certainly doesn't have the authenticity of Lou Reed singing about heroin. I think it achieves what it sets out to do and that is entertain. Some people will love it and some people won't.

One of the things I like about them is that they've experimented with a lot of existing genres and sub-genres. The influences are often clear. And it doesn't feel like a band anymore, but more like a culmination of ideas. A metal band (Kami Band) is merely part of it. And so are the three J-Pop girls up front.
Not to mention that what they give in their big live shows are more than just metal concerts. I think that's part of the reason it feels like a "polished presentation." Imagine a guy working with bands, as the jack of all trades to facilitate bands. Then demand for rock/metal, etc. bands goes down in Japan and he's asked to work in the kids division. He looks for talent and find a girl who sings loud and thinks: what if the loud music I like and her loud voice go together ? He tried to find ways to work with her. A year or 2 later he gets a chance (lucky break) to try this crazy idea inside the company as a hobby project, no funding (in that sense like a garage band), but he's allowed to use some of the existing resources (in that sense, it's like him facilitating a band through his existing connections). And it got popular. The girls used to perform on small stages with no backing band, etc. Starting out at things like the food court of a festival where the comedians perform.. Because they are so different they got noticed and more famous. Then the live band gets added, for a while even had a clearly fake band. Babymetal never claimed to be a real band. But you know what ? Babymetal is a gateway band and increased popularity of metal in Japan and get new generations interested in metal around the world. Three tiny ladies singing and doing choreographed interpretive dance to passionate music that is a unique blend of multiple genres played by a world class metal band. I've never seen anything like it and that's what I look for in bands now days. I don't care about all the typical pretentious criticisms they receive. They are just so damn good at what they do. I love their music and dedication to excellence. They connect with their audience so well and put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. They don't fit the typical metal band mold, and that's a great thing in my eyes because there's too much of the same old tired metal formula out there now days. Bring something new to the table for god's sake.
If you don't like them that's fine, just move along. Let's just enjoy the bands we connect with and stop all the stupid gatekeeping. Nice clickbait, though.

@@JohnFromAccounting I think most metalheads would respect and be fans of the composers, not necessarily soloists or orchestral players. And most metalheads definitely aren't pop fans, and that's one of the reasons. I mean when you look at why bands like Nightwish or Kamelot or Ayreon are so beloved, a lot of the reason is because of their excellent songwriting. People like Tuomas Holopainen and Roy Khan have devoted followings because they bring the whole package of talent, including technical ability, stage performance and composition, and especially the combination of those things - like he was saying, watching a singer who composed the song and wrote their own lyrics and is pouring their own heart out on stage a la Roy Khan or Tobias Sammett hits different than someone just standing up and singing someone else's music. And then if you look at Ayreon, wow, what a devoted following Arjen has, and he doesn't even tour or perform on a lot of his stuff - he's just the songwriter. But that's kind of the most important part. Here, it seems like the musicians are more just hired guns installed to do a job, not really the people behind the music in any way. It's all sort of a product, with someone just orchestrating all the hiring, more than a band. It's hard to see a lot of emotion and meaning in it.

You also have to understand that the stage band (Kami Band) are literally not part of Babymetal per se, but are very talented studio musicians who play with BM on their live tours. BM at that time were Su, Moa and Yui, now only Su and Moa. What you didn't see In that video was the dancing which accompanies most of the songs. This Is a large part of their appeal. Babymetal are not strictly a band, they are an Idol group. To judge them for not acting like a band on stage, Is a little unfair as you are missing the point of their live work. Yes, yes indeed there's a guy behind this project, a producer named Kobayashi aka Kobametal, he's the one who put the whole puzzle together, but if you've thinking of something like Disney Channel you're definitely wrong, things didn't go that way.
First of all the guy is a real metal fan, though he ended up working with idols on J-Pop songs, he got SU into this, convinced Amuse about trying a single song in a different style, got YUI and MOA onboard and that's how an idol group, Sakura Gakuin ended up with a "weird" song in their first album, Doki★Doki Morning. From there it was a complicated path, Amuse didn't pour any more money, the first shows outside SG were small venues, they cannot even afford to pay for a real band, so they sang over backtracks. But it was working and Amuse had to rethink their priorities. So yeah, they conquered every single meter of their long path, no one, literally no one, except Kobametal of course, dared to dream about anything even close to what BABYMETAL became in just few years.

They have one guy, Kei Kobayashi, who is the producer, manager, and the guy who came up with the whole idea in the first place. This is his baby. Centered around the lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto. This specific performance was a Su-Metal solo. So There are actually 2 other members, making it a trio of girls ages 14-15 at the time of this performance in 2014, Yuimetal and Moametal. Su-Metal is the lead singer but the other two girls do dance routines and background vocals, have songs of their own as duets ironically labeled Black Babymetal, and are hype girls encouraging audience participation. This is at the beginning of their career and this song was considered a serious song among their usual repertoire of heavy but cute fun songs. To better understand Babymetal, you just react to a trio performance. Try Headbanger live, or Karate live. Their later albums tend to be a bit more mature in sound and their latest 2 single releases are a completely new sound for them. A preview of their upcoming concept album, The Other One. Poor (zero) research, misinformed on every aspect of who and what they are, same old cliche crap opinions based on the same old suspicions of misinformed elitist gatekeepers that were disproved and put to bed so long ago.
"Manufactured ... girl with a pretty face ... blah blah blah" The whole concept was formed and developed around that pretty girl's vocal talents and stage presence (not her looks) by one metalhead producer who saw her potential and the chance with her to try something new, something that had not been done that might reinvigorate the stagnant metal and rock scene in Japan that was in a serious decline at that time. This was no corporation led thing based on a formula guaranteed to make money - quite the opposite, their agency thought it was the worst idea ever and provided no budget as they were convinced it would be a short-lived and failed experiment.
"Can't see the band hidden at the back..." just after Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura had come out front of stage with their duelling guitars and all lights on BOH on bass accompanying the vocals. It was almost like you were primed to say that regardless of what actually happened during the performance.
I can't see why anybody would take any opinion you might offer seriously when you can't even tell when music is being played and sung live ... or maybe you're more used to listening to bands who need the help of the studio technicians and sound bad live.

Ah, another sceptic of Babymetal.... Were they manufactured? Yes they most absolutely were. They weren't some college buddies that got together in someone's garage and formed a band, and played shitty gigs until they got famous, as seems to be the only way most music purists seems to think a band can be true and real....These girls went through talent auditions, trained at an early age to sing and perform, and were promoted by a big record label. But does that take away their achievements? Hell no. If Koba/Amuse was planning on making money, Jpop with Metal would probably be the last thing they would put money in (not that Babymetal had a lot of funding to begin with, having to borrow clothes for costumes, and guys in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments while singing to a backtrack, and having to play in food courts for their early gigs).... Back then and even now, the genres that make mega money are R&B/Rap/Hip Hop or Pop. Personally I like to think of them as a handcrafted supergroup.
The producer Koba, wanted to refresh the metal scene, so he found the best young talented vocalist he can find (Su) and paired her with her two friends (Yui and Moa) who would be backup singers/dancers/hypewomen to get the crowd involved, and then found the best session musicians in Japan to form the Kamiband to back them up in live shows.... If you look at the some of the best guitarist, bassist, drummers in Japans rock/metal scene, you would find some of them have played in the Kamiband at one time or another.
Babymetal definitely kicked open the door for all the recent female Japanese metal/rock bands that has been making their way to the West..... I think Saki from Nemophila said in interview that Babymetal's success is what paved the road for female jrock/metal groups to have greater recognition overseas. And Babymetal is not what you would consider to be a traditional band... Lovebite, Band Maid, Aldious, TriDENT those are bands but Babymetal is a rock opera broadway show. Legend 1997 (not the year the concert was held, but the bday concert of Su who was born in 1997) and Legend S XX Baptism are the best examples of the rock show aspect of Babymetal.
I always find it rather funny how people like to equate being a "gimmick" as to be the opposite of being talented/good, especially in the music industry.... Sometimes a gimmick is whats needed to break the mold, look at KISS and Slipknot, though they might not be considered gimmick now, but their whole presentation and look was can definitely be seen as a gimmick when it started.... Babymetal is definitely a gimmick, but more than that, it was a handcrafted supergroup. Babymetal's metal creds were in question when they started, but having been defended, supported, toured with, and/or collaborated by the likes of Rob Zombie, Cory Taylor, Rob Halford, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Metallica, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, their Metal cred is only questioned by a very small minority. Please continue exploring the rest of their stuff, you might not like all their stuff (as I fan, theres a few that I'm not that big on), but I'm sure there are some that you will appreciate. 🤘🦊🤘

Babymetal is everything you described but they are absolutely no joke. The whole reason for their creation was to save metal music in Japan. Sales of metal music were drastically horrible in Japan, causing the music industry to all but abandon the genre. There were still underground groups and such but the industry was having a really hard time selling the genre. The genre had been in decline for many years and the last truly big metal act was X Japan back in the late 80's and early 90's. Then came along Babymetal. They are a fusion of J-pop, idol and metal music. They did this so that a large number of different age ranges could listen to it and get an introduction into metal music without being overwhelmed by it. And guess what, it worked. Sales in the metal genre started to steadily increase. As the the band became better known and more mature sales increased more and more. This also came about because they don't just stick to one genre of metal, they have songs in about every sub genre of metal. But I would say Babymetal is best described as a top tier introduction to metal.

@Fukyouwaon of course they never expected to be successful, but that never stopped them from trying. But yes the point of the band was to create a style of metal music that everybody could enjoy regardless of age. That is why they encompass all sub-genres of metal. They wanted to be a gateway or an introduction to metal so if the listener found a sound they enjoyed they could explore deeper into that sub-genre. Now when I talk about "they" I ultimately am referring to Koba the producer and creator of Babymetal. Now to the industry dying. Yes it very much so was. There were a few bands that could make it out there but they were becoming fewer and farther between. The genre was on a fast pace to its death, even here in the US the genre was on a slow decline with very little hope of being revived. There are tons of interviews out there of some of the biggest names in metal talking about the Babymetal phenomenon reviving the industry worldwide.

Their started as a gimmick, they've been doing gimmick niche stuffs that could beyond acceptance of both "mainstream media" or "organic band" that no one thought would work, along with some serious innovation stuffs like unity between people, different kind of music fan (metal, pop,...), empowering, encouraging, get through hard time,... they don't stop creating diversity in their catalog, they don't stick to one genre... And they go all out 200% in their shows to make the audience feel it too - in fact, there's some clean up because that's from a pro-shot bluray, but they really sound THAT good Live. If you liaten to studio version of Akatsuki you'll see the difference.
Yeah I'd say they're a musical act that does something beyond a normal band do, they could do something silly but they do it seriously so they made that big and last that long, with all those love and acceptance of other metal bands around the world, and there's no other manufacturered group managed to do it.

The best way to describe BABYMETAL is anime metal with a touch of Visual Kei. They are actually a very diverse kind of heavy metal performance act that combines anime styled pop singing with thrash, speed metal, power metal, and death metal. In Japan, much of the concerts in this style are very elaborate and visually impressive as well as very well choreographed. One cannot underestimate the technical proficiency and accuracy of their music and how talented the band is despite the name. They have some of the most gifted guitarists and drummers on the planet who could easily compete if not completely overtake some of the top metal bands today. If Babymetal had a different name and featured your typical metal vocalists, they would already have reached critical acclaim as one of metal's greatest acts... BABYMETAL IS THE REAL DEAL!!!

I did look forward to this and I wasn’t disappointed! They’re definitely not a joke but, as a band, they do have a sense of humor. I think a lot of the other commenters here have the skinny on it better than I could do I’ll start by saying that, yes, Su-Metal is definitely singing live here and she’s been doing that since on or about 2012, I think. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. They did start off lip syncing in their earlier days and had a “band” on stage called Babybone. Basically a bunch of people dressed up in skeleton suits. That same skeleton keeps showing up in their marketing stuff which is hilarious. The live band is definitely playing. In this clip, you’re seeing Hideki Aoyama on the drums, the guy with the paddle bass, or six string bass, is BOH. The two guitar players? Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura. The latter is the one with the sparkle pink guitar. The former did the guitar solo on the studio recording of this song. Leda also played guitar and bass on “Amore” which is on their second album. He also played bass on “Road of Resistance” which, if you think it sounds like Dragonforce, you’d be partly right because Herman Li and Sam Toteman did the guitars on that one.
Funny story about that. Herman, in two Twitch sessions, said that him and Sam didn’t think they were going to play that song live so they made it difficult. They did have to play it live so they had to go relearn it. Lol
Interesting that you say “Black Babymetal” when you saw the Kami Band face paint. Black Babymetal is a thing. It was a subunit of Babymetal with the two other members around this era. “Akatsuki” is one of Su-Metal’s solo songs. Black Babymetal is Yuimetal and Moametal doing songs on their own. “4 no Uta” has a lovely homage to Metallica. They even did a black metal one called “Sis Anger”. I told you this band has a sense of humor! Lol
Speaking of Metallica, they opened for them in Seoul in 2017. Right before they opened for Guns N’ Roses in Japan.
Babymetal itself started off as a subunit of Sakura Gakuin before it just went off on its own.
I like that you mentioned Marty Friedman here because he was one of Babymetal’s earliest supporters. Fun fact: Takayoshi Ohmura played in Marty Friedman’s band.
I thought what you said about chemistry was interesting, too. Most people, at first blush, come away with that impression because they don’t know their shtick. Their whole gimmick is that the Fox God sent the members of Babymetal to unite the world through heavy metal. The Kami Band, or God Band, was sent by the Fox God to assist them. They’re more or less supposed to be anonymous in shows. But fans love them. If you do want to see them have chemistry and interact with their band, check out their performance at the 2016 AP Awards. They did a Priest medley with Rob Halford. Yuimetal and Moametal had these little Flying Vs and they “jammed” with the two guitar players. That configiwas with Takayoshi Ohmura and the late great Mikio Fujioka. Moa and Yui weren’t really playing for most of the medley but I didn’t care. Everyone looked like they were having a blast. I do suspect they played the first two bars of “Breaking The Law” before the band took over. That’s as odd the cuff as you’re going to get with Babymetal.
Check out “Tales of the Destinies” sometime. It’s like Frozen meets Dream Theater. So many crazy time signature changes in that one. And a few other surprises.

I feel sorry for the girls in a way for deciding to go metal because some of the most narcissistic people on the planet are metalheads imo. Clearly those rebellious teenagers never matured so their fragile toxic masculinity is threatened by fiercely adorable but monster metal girls (now admirable and stunning ladies) who have more natural talent, professional work ethic and impeccable manners. This fading dinosaur should be thrown on the front line and we'll see what kind of badass he is. I won't expect him to stay in the fight and cover my flank if we're about to be over ran. But I get why he has such a high opinion of himself. He is obviously a legend in the metal world and that speaks volumes. We don't deserve Babymetal and he is proof of that. Oh and the girls have been singing live vocals long before they joined Babymetal. I think westerners are just not used to this kind of talent.

@@timrose3960 Well, what alot of people don't understand is that all Japanese music (and anime, toys, gadgets, etch...) created was created solely for a Japanese crowd, period. They never have aspirations of going international (nor do they care to). Babymetal was already popular for years before they did their first western performance at Sonisphere. And there were already fans of the girls when they were in Sakura Gakuin. Their first foray outside of Japan was Singapore at an anime convention, and people already knew who they were when they did their first meet and greet.
There might be a little bit of jealousy in his opinion though. After all, who wouldn't be jealous of being part of a band who was invited to play at the prestigious Budokan. And being the youngest members ever to perform there? Or play to two sold out consecutive days with different setlists at the Tokyo Dome with 55k fans each night? There's lots to be jealous about. He was too quick to pass judgement and created false exposition to cover it up. They aren't a 'garage' band, but they've had their share of performing at malls and festivals and borrowed clothes to get to where they're at. It's a bit narrow minded for him to think that all 'commercialized' artist were fed with a silver spoon. He should strive to broaden his horizons. But I also do understand not all people want to be enlightened because they want to continue to live in the little world they created around them for themselves. I hope he will see how the world of music is much bigger than what little he's seen or experienced. BM is one of those who won't fit into (or even try to) a mold people want to see them as. I'm patient enough to see if he does more BM reactions. Like many people, he might be one of those diehard converts that takes a long time to acknowledge them as a metal band. I don't have problems with the manufacturish nature of BABYMETAL. Instead of having the band writing the music it is their producer yeah. And their team is larger and more specific; people dedicated only to the performance and the show, people dedicated to write a couple of songs per album instead of being the players themselves... I think it just make for a better quality of the whole thing, everyone is an expert at what they do.
And don't you think they had this production at first, no one gave a fuck about this crazy idea at first and they had to fight some years until they started to get attention. They started this group twelve years ago, when this girls were only 12 and 11.

I'm a huge BABYMETAL fan, but I also understand all your criticism. Sure, they are a completely manufactured band, but the music is masterfully crafted and a breath of fresh air from all the modern bands that seem indistinguishable from one another. You talk about band unity and how the band doesn't interact with the girls so much, which is true, but when all three girls are on stage, the unity between them is amazing. The dancing mixed with metal mixed with genre mashing songs is what truly makes BABYMETAL special in my opinion.

They interact with each other all the time. Su-metal gives queues to the drummer all the time, Moametal is always making faces at the drummer and Su-metal, and Moametal and Yuimetal gives each other signals all the time. Yuimetal is the shy one, so most of the time she is just stoic, hence the nickname Yuibot. But Moametal is the extrovert of the three and she's always having fun on stage.
But here's one thing I haven't seen mentioned here. I came from the pop side of music. Babymetal exposed me to the metal genre and I've come to appreciate the musical talent those performers have.

A nasally singer with precious little character to her voice. Trem picking that all but completely obscures the notes and guitar tone, which is also all but obscured by the incessant double bass, which is the hallmark of an unimaginative drummer and unimaginative song writers. There are ZERO hooks in this song, nothing whatsoever to remember about it. Bottom line, there is no substance here. Which is what Shred, in his ineloquent way, is trying to say.

Good reaction and welcome to the Babymetal galaxy. It is normal that something may not like or convince you. There is nothing wrong with that. But Babymetal is a hard group to define.
Babymetal's style is known as "Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal" and they are its creators. It is based on the fusion of any genre of metal with pop, thus always giving very energetic songs, generally heavy and full of joy. It is very difficult not to finish watching or listening to a Babymetal song without a smile on your face.
    They currently have 3 albums:
1- Babymetal, where they were between 12 and 15 years old, so you can find songs that could easily be defined as children's.
2.- Metal Resistance: between 16 and 18 years old. In this album you can find both the spirit of the early days and the progress towards maturity as a group and as individuals.
3.- Metal Galaxy: 19+ where his music, without losing its essence of energy and joy, already has, in my opinion, a marked musical maturity.
They are currently presenting their fourth album, called "The Other One" where they have only presented one song called "Divine Attack", but of course if the quality is this, it promises a lot.

I don't take them too seriously. It is a gimmick, but I think it's a cool gimmick. It's like opera. The people didn't write it, but you can still appreciate the opera. Same thing with plays or movies. It's just another form of entertainment. They aren't trying to pass off as 100% legitimate band. It's supposed to just be a gimmick really.

Agreed, one of Babymetals best traits is that they are self aware... They know what they are and they own it.

@@irodama actually there's more interaction on stage than you know, but on their big/official shows they keep that very subtle that hard to notice - gotta keep it professional for the pro-shots which they will sell later (like the famous Moa's shenanigans), there are whole lot more in their world tour with small venues

I don’t mind the ”corporate” side of it. I mean, good music is good music! And since they put on like Rammstein level production live and I really enjoy power metal it just makes it amazing! One of the few bands that I think allways plays better live than their studio version!
They have acually started to write more themselves! Su is like 25 now so probably easier to write songs compared to when you’re 15 haha:)

When Jeff Walker from Carcass says the highlight of a concert festival was seeing and meeting Babymetal, they have been given the metal cred they need. They are the "little sisters" of many of the metal bands they've toured with and the bands will defend them and protect them as one of their own. ruclips.net/video/2rMWq8w45jk/видео.html

Nice honest reaction Shred and to some extent, I was like you initially. Bear in mind that you are not their target audience and they were originally conceived to attract young fans to the metal genre, particularly young female fans, by easing them in with a Pop influence. They succeeded with aplomb and brought along with them a whole army of fans World wide. To appreciate BM, you need to forget your idea of what metal ‘has to be’ and just see what their body of work entails. They cover so many different genres that some may appeal and, in your case, most probably won’t, particularly their earlier ‘childish’ songs, but their music is solid, the band is amazing and the girls are incredible performers. The best way that I can describe BM is that they’re not a band, they are performance art. They are metal without the aggression and negativity and package it into a completely new concept. Bottom line, they’re just good fun.

he's not taking into account, underneath the lights the flames the thundering music, and phenomenal bass/drums and technically superb guitars, they are still japanese, and japan is a wholly different strange ancient world apart from anything on earth. and they are no joke.

Fun reaction. And a little unsuspecting, out of time. Maybe in 2010, 2011, when the project started, there was some reason for this matter... But in 2016, the date of the video you reacted to, they are already established, without any concern for this type of thing.. these "non-metals" already put whole arenas jumping and screaming "death! death! death!", or the same arenas jumping and clapping as they sang "hey satan, I'm here! follow my claps!"...
Beautifully written and arranged songs, top quality musicians, beautifully executed and choreographed performances, fantastic productions and sensational audiences with a solid fan base.
    Babymetal is unique.

BABYMETAL's lead vocalist Suzuka (Su-metal) was 17 in this video. She is now 24. Her height is 5ft. 3 ins! All BABYMETAL songs are different. If you really want to form an honest objective opinion you really should try a few more. How about a more recent performance by "grown up" BABYMETAL (all three girls!) with their epic arena anthem "Arkadia" ruclips.net/video/81lxs2xlcGY/видео.html
Trust me, the musicians are 100% live and Su-metal never lip-sincs. The reason they sound so polished is that all the band are world-class players and BABYMETAL have been performing for 12 years now. Yes, BABYMETAL employ Japan's top metal songwiters but Su-metal is now contributing lyrics and BABYMETAL have done collab songs with DragonForce, Bring Me The Horizon and Polyphia, who are all big BABYMETAL supporters: as are Rob Halford, Corey Taylor, Korn AND Metallica, plus many other big names.
They say BABYMETAL are legit, are they really all wrong and you're right? :)

6:49 she's definitely singing and they don't use much manipulation on her voice at all. However, I'll agree that this is very much popmetal and there's zero connection with the band. The band is technically excellent and the writing is great, but it's soulless on stage. There just robots supporting the vocalist. She's a hell of a vocalist but it's not something I'd ever seek out or call great metal.
