Wing Chun is a fighting system NOT a style. It is the science of fighting and the best self defense system one can learn. For those that say it is useless, good. It's better to not pass the techniques down to people who are unworthy of the knowledge

My husband trained Wing Tsun Kunfa under sifu Keith Fain. He says critics of wing tsun boxing y many students fail understand environment this art designed for. Not meant for open ring or big area where western boxing y muay Thai shine. It created for extreme close quarters civilian defense in congested cities like Hong Kong. It shines in extreme close quarters like modern prison cell, subway car, restroom stall, crowded elevator or stairwell. Common criminal ambush choke points. Each art has its area of operation. Judokas shine in the clench as does muay Thai y Greco Roman wrestling. BJJ shines on the ground in a 1 vs 1 duel. Okinawan shuri te shines within indoor narrow hallways allowing straightforward movements. Harimau Silat shines in wet muddy ricefields where pulling guard will drown u & standup footwork would bog one down in mud & water. WingTsun works well in a small prison cell, where lack of space prevents roundhouse kicking y evasive western boxing footwork.

This particular expression of "Wing Chun" is very different to the others; a refined/expanded take on Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun, which itself is a particular take on Hong Kong Wing Chun...
Always reminds me of the idea of dialectic in philosophy; a kind of continuous critical discussion, refining our understanding/actualization (in life) of the ideas across generations of lives... very cool.

Instead of saying what WC style is better than others, say what WC is definitely good for. It's good for slow sparring with other WC students. It teaches you how to punch straight. It may teach you (over many years) how to issue 'short power' if you train for that rigorously. It does NOT teach you how to fight. IF you already know how to fight, you may use some WC concepts. It might make a female more confident, but she should never think it makes her able to defeat a male of her own size or bigger, make her pugnacious, or keep her from using normal de-escalation methods, and from using common sense about going out with a pairs or accepting rides from strangers or not listening to her inner-voice about danger.

Those young students are so fortunate to have her guidance and total support from GM WKL. I would have killed to have my young girls enrolled in their school, and I as well (but sadly, there's none nearby in The States). I always thought wing chun is cool but after going to a couple of classes I'm not sure. I'm talking about the self defence aspect. In a real fight most flashy techniques go out the window and you're overcome with fear.
In a real fight fists come at you fast and not just one at a time. I tried this wing chun class and the teacher showed us this technique which I thought wouldn't work.
It was my first class so I guess I should give her the benefit of the doubt. But I don't think she had ever been in a fight or had to defend herself. But I could be wrong.
I wouldn't mind learning wing chun as long as it is taught by a good teacher and it's taught in a more realistic way.

To know nothing in the Oriental martial arts means that after you have been practicing MA for many years, you should clean forget the word "style" and start using your combat reflexes no matter what "styles" you've been doing. Wing Chun is great. One can take a lot of good techniques for close combatf from it. It isn't necessary to study classical Wing Chun

The very concept, is the reason for its failure. To engage in hand to hand combat, you first have to develop footwork. You have to understand that striking set ups, and foot, and hip movement are what makes techniques powerful, and effective. Wing Chun doesn't train any of those things. Thats why it has always failed in a fight.

As I have learned it, it was actually created by five Monks of shaolin, one of whom was Ng Mui. Wing Chun was created adding the best of Shaolin at that time, to help turn out more proficient fighters to fight against the Han in a short amount of time , compared to traditional Shaolin , which was about 10 years. When the temple was attacked, the style had already been created, but was yet to be named. All of the monks escaped the burning and the attack and separated going in different directions. Ng Mui was credited as creating Wing Chun, but she was only one of five. And the Dragon Pole form of wing chun (Luk Dim Boon Kwan) was later added by another person on Red Junk, who was actually one of the five monks hiding on the red Junk and later taught the Dragon Pole form to a person who had learned Wing chun from Ng Mui Lineage.

It's ugly and the over preparation put into sparring gives a person the wrong impression of violence. The only real experience is experience. You come to class warm up , do some techniques,.forms or kata maybe. Now your ready for sparring. It's done in an honourable way. Self defense is anything but honourable and no preparation just ugly as shit. Love to spar , no better game but that is all it is.

@@TheKickeur and ... in the krav school I attend, as I think it's important to get more than one opinion, sparring is seen as just sparring. The wing chun club I train in we don't spar, all but 1 instructor works as a bouncer. They don't spar they do it for real and do it well. Again , sparring just makes you a good sparrer not a good fighter. They are two very different things.

+mofotox WKL, like most of his fellow WSL followers, had gone into a dead end road and further and further away from true WC enlightenment. WSL's way is at best go for fighting another wc, straightline-only attackers. No one would ever know the quality and calibre of his challengers in those so-called roof-top fights. nothing but exaggerated propaganda, no one remembered how dismal their fight results in confronting kick boxers in Japan, him, William cheung et al.

I can see that both of you can be quite anal about lineage, but perhaps both of you can pull your heads out of your asses for just a brief moment, and consider the example of Tai Chi: Tai Chi also has multiple lineages and versions, with five major styles present today. These five styles are different from each other, yet follow the same fundamental Tai Chi principles. Now, you wouldn't say that any one of these Tai Chi styles aren't Tai Chi; so why would you say that practical wing chun is not wing chun?

I keep reading a female created Wing Chun. It was a or one of a few Shaolin female monks, during a bad time in their history, when she escaped trouble and came across a young female named Wing Chun. The female monk taught the young woman her style she learned being a monk. The Shaolin monk named her style Wing Chun after the name of her student. The style you say was started by a female was already taught to others male or female. The female monk could've possibly modified it to make it her style and not what she was taught. This is just paraphrasing from what I come across.
