Thanks for the Stevie Wonder. I needed that this morning. My favourite use of a cocked wah sound is XTC's Making Plans for Nigel. Also, it's a pedal I've never owned. Sometimes, I feel like I need to hand in my guitar playing membership card for that.
When you put the wah in front of the distortion, the peak of the filter is getting smooshed back down to a natural level while creating more harmonic overtones, rather than emphasising a bunch of intermodulations, which is why before typically sounds nicer. Also small correction, a notch is also known as a band reject filter, and cuts out frequencies. Wah pedals use a band pass filter with high resonance, they are the opposite of a notch. The filter you show in the video is a bell (or peak) filter, which is neither and is created differently. I believe they are quite a bit more complicated from an engineering point of view and aren't used in physical wah pedals. Auto-wahs use a resonant lowpass filter, which wah pedals also sometimes use to retain low end.
The tone knob pots you describe at the end are called logarithmic (coded B), while the ones that change the tone more steadily are called linear (coded A). You will notice a variety of these are also used in effects pedals, making the effect of turning the knob more even or more apparent towards the edges💡
Outstanding as usual. Your playing on 'I Wish' was excellent & used that timbre perfectly. It's tricky to get faster, slinky lines to work with a filter. Well done.
I was so glad to see you were getting those tones with the Long Life. I have to keep reminding myself I don't need a wah because I already have a Long Life and an expression pedal haha
Man, the technique tip is so cool. I have played around with the volume knob to get reverse delay type sounds, and used different volume settings for each pickup and switched between them in patterns for a Tom Morello sort of thing, but have always taken a "set and forget" approach to the tone knobs. Inspired by this.
The Empress Phaser also allows for an Expression-based sweep, in 4 stage mode it sounds like an insane wah pedal, and with its Gain knob dimed it becomes an overdrive wah monster pal
I used to use wah-wah a ton on bass because of Cliff Burton, and sometimes when I was running that whole fuzz wah bass sound the Wah would hit very specific frequencies where it'd just ring out and hit some kinda feedback, combined with delay it created some really addicting eldritch noises. Oh and your playing in this video was particularly tasty, guess that's just what a wah pedal does to a guy.
Another fantastic video on effect types! I knew about the cocked wah thing from Graham Coxon’s pedalboard, but all of the others are really neat ways to open up what I always thought was a pretty basic effect. I think it’s time to mess with my EQ pedal and try some things out.
Great video & explanation, as usual ! I'm not a 'Wah' guy, but do have one, in case it's needed. What I don't get, is why everyone always misses the 'ultimate wah', the WD-7 (Weeping Demon), from Ibanez...You can set the filter as you wish (yes it has a volume, notch & low pass too), and you can even choose the stifness of the pedal! Oh, & it's optical (no cracking pots). + it has an automatic mode ! You need to try one! Take care
Another great pedal for the cocked wah effect is the Angry Rhubarb by Red Beard Effects - it has a control for notch location and a control for notch volume, so you can scoop or peak in bass, mid, or treble.
Great video! You cover a lot of exceplent sub-topics here. I learned nothing, but then again I have spent a lot of my life experimenting with wah. Unrelated: Today is my birthday!
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON A FREQOUT, my favorite pedal ever which emits the sound of feedback, but if u turn the dry off and only the wet it has a whistle sound, and or like an e bow its so cool and I think it would be amazing. I've already figured out alot of interesting stuff but i'd love to see ur take on it
Didn't watch video yet but I'm passionate about this topic because of Kevin Carogan's exquisite use of wah pedal on the first two albums by third eye blind. Here's is slow sweeping ethereal work on "I want you" from the debut.. so much tasty layering in that song. Here a more traditional wah solo in the vein of slash or something in "graduate"
CHAMELEONATTACK Also, a wah sounds better when you make the appropriate vowel shapes with your mouth! Works with resonant filter sweeps on an analog synthesizer, too!
3:11 moveable band-pass filter? As I learned it, a notch filter is a narrow band-stop filter, but I get what you mean and it makes sense if you look at it from a certain perspective.
@ this is what happens when I’m listening to you while I’m cooking. Appreciate the clarification man - alas for the whole rest of the video you also made a damn good case for wah pedals and also, yknow, working to improve as a guitar player …
About halfway through but isn't a wah wah technically a bandpass filter and not a notch filter? notch would take off that frequency while bandpass is the one you showed in the picture which sort of boosts a narrow band of frequencies and cuts out the rest. Great video so far though! Love the random wah fun
I think @noisebrick9248 is correct. A low-pass lets low frequency pass and attenuates highs, a high-pass lets high frequency pass and attenuates lows, and a band-passlets a narrow band pass through and attenuates everything else. A notch would be the inverse of that, passing everything except for the narrow band which it attenuates. @CyberattackWorld
I always thought of these this way Low pass - lets only low freq pass through Band pass - lets only freq in that specific band pass through High pass - lets only high freq pass through These are basic outputs of a state variable filter. Notch creates a notch in the spectrum, so essentially carving out that frequency, usually pretty narrow. And a peak filter is the opposite of notch, so similar to band pass but with a way narrower range of frequencies that get that boost. But yea I didn't wanna nitpick and go all "akshually" about this haha it's pretty clear what you meant
I think the best thing you can do is put one wah before your distortion, and another after it. Then another distortion after that. And then another wah.
I honestly don’t remember but if you plug an expression pedal into it it starts doing the wah wah thing immediately so all you’re really doing after that is fine tuning based on what you think sounds good. Having said that I’m sure I had Gain on maximum.
I’ve talked about it on the AMA livestreams but it never got its own video. Maybe I should do one, I’m just not sure what the angle should for it to get the most RUclips traffic. But at any rate it was custom built for me by Alex Glasser at Iron Horse Instruments, really fun process.
@@CyberattackWorld Gotchya. Just curious about the specs and wiring. I'd certainly watch a short vid of you explaining/ demo'ing it :D Thanks for the reply!
It changes the scale of the resistance due to the linear vs logarithmic potentiometer. If the pot is linear, moving from 0-1 changes the filter cutoff from 0hz to 2000hz (as a random example, I don't know how they're actually set up), and it will have a large noticeable impact on the tone, whereas moving from 9-10 would move it from 18000hz to 20000hz which will be inaudible to most people. Mind you, actual log pots don't perfectly scale, but they're good enough.
Quick question for anyone who may know. Since the Chase Bliss Preamp MKII has the ability to control the frequency sweep of the mids via expression as well as the ability to place the mids before or after the Benson Preamp circuit that basically gives me a wah pedal that can sit both before and after the distortion, correct?
sometimes you rip into those sample riffs and I lose my entire shit and I need you to know that I was shouting along with the Outshined Bridge or Outro or whatever that section is

CYBER MONDAY
CYBER MONDAY
Songs in the Key of life is my favorite album of all time. I came for the pedal talk, and I stay for the Stevie Wonder covers.
You nasty boy
he rules
"I had the stupid taper put in my guitar specifically so that I could do this" 😄
None more Cyberattack 😆
I will now call exponential pots "stupid tapers" forever. Thank you changing my boring electrical lexicon.
Love those Herbie Hancock riffs
Your sound example for "designing your own" fucking slaps. You don't need me to tell you this but you can really shred dude that was awesome.
🥊❤️
It's Cyberattack Monday!
This is the key point
I love. This. Creator. The absolute win every damn time. Vibes and support to you, Cyber Attack!
Happy Cyber Monday to you on this day

Dude the Rusty Cage riff sounded so mean. Love that riff.
That riff rattles my skull
came here to say the same. soundgarden was before it's time for off kilter metal. I would love a full cover from cyberattack

Sent this to every guitarist I know! Greetings from Seattle!
That’s awesome thank you
Chameleon, I Wish AND Rusty Cage?! Great videos and impecable taste.
thanks i'm glad we're on the same page
cada video de este hombre es una maravilla mas increíble que la anterior
Grande Cyberattack!!
Cyberattack has understood everything, thanks for your content!
Love that wah wah watson riff at 2:39. underrated headhunters tune
for sure

Legendary wah sounds. Your playing and creativity always inspires me to go play.

Glad to hear it. FWIW I think this wah-wah trick is easier than the reverse-delay sounds you can get with the volume knob.
10:05 that’s JUICY lead playing dude. love the way you sound.
Thanks man at some point I’m gonna switch to make videos about playing (and thinking) about solos

RUSTY CAGE let’s goooo 🔥
playing wild wild west with a wah was a hilariously perfect choice for a demo lmaooo
yup wild wild west
looking forward to the new album!
Loving these covers!

Love your example using the Hang Up Your Hang-Ups intro from Manchild (Herbie Hancock).
not fucking around
Absolutely fantastic video. :)

Came here and stayed here for the dopest sounds.
I use a wah after reverb for some reverb filtering effects
I'm saying distortion before and after, and mix up the flavours. Like overdrive before, and fuzz after. Like that...
Miles Davis used wah-wah cocked on his trumpet for many years.
Great info, as always, thanks.

Manchild 😍
10:32 awww heck that tone is perfect and now I want a wah wah pedal. Curses.
good news dude that’s the one you don’t need to buy a pedal for

Funny enough it was wah of all of the effects that took me the longest to find the one I like. Vox vintage handwound, and i'm not lookin back 🤠
I hold your opinions in high regard and your repeated use of Benson effects means I'm going to have to try some.
Benson is no joke
What do you do to fix a squeaky wah? asking for a friend
