Thank you so much! No one in my family crochets and I'm learning with mostly acrylic, the amount of beginner friendly videos on here of people happily sharing tips of their craft makes my heart so happy ♡
That steamer works great! I’m am most interested in your blocking matt with measured grid- how handy! where can you find that? Is it inches, I would need centimeters.
I don't believe they make those mats any longer... I was fortunate enough to receive it as a bonus with one of my machines... Yes, those are inches, and yes, it is very handy. However, I would have also preferred centimeters... Sill works great for keeping the fabric straight and sized...
You can find in almost any Wal-Mart that has a fabric section a cardboard cutting mat. You can put pins in it fine though I wouldn't put a soaking wet piece on it, I have blocked many items just fine on it. Bonus: its very inexpensive so even if you have to replace it, you aren't losing but a few dollars. Good luck.
You need to experiment with your yarn. And it depends on the iron, too… It’s been a while since I have done it, pretty sure I was using setting for cotton with steam.

What heat setting are you using with your iron?
