Damn. WTF is this #HARDFACTS in the first 5 seconds?
“Ok, that’s most of Russia’s 5th gen fleet.” 😂
Based
he's about 1.5 years out of date. The number in service has gone up drastically since the start of the war in ukraine. the number is somewhere between 12 and 72.
Such effortless shade thrown.
@@Greasy__Beargreat, the us has 450 F-35s 😂
@bengreen1012 what's your source?
The fact that both of you adapted the Hollywood fantasy version to your real-life procedures and experiences rather than just badmouthing and dogging the movie relentlessly, like SO many other reviewers do, speaks volumes to your character. Both of you prove again to be true gentlemen and it continues to be a pleasure to just sit and be a fly on the wall with you gents.
I like the metaphor. Being a fly on the wall. Pretty apt description of what it’s like seeing these people talk on the other side of the screen lmao
I agree!!
I think purpose of this is not "who is going to be most polite towards bs", its whole purpose is to point out inaccuracies.
I think they also understand and appreciate that this movie is a tribute to them and their service as well. The movie might not be 100% accurate/realistic but it shines a light on and glorifies US pilots none the less.
Yeah, not like that guy Mover lol, bro knows it's media and still shits on it like it's supposed to be real
Funny story, my father's original callsign was Maverick. AGM-65 having a malfunction and ripping the pylon off the F-4 will get you that callsign lol. So his first assignment was flying F-4s out of Udorn, Thailand at the tailend of Vietnam. Few years later he gets a billet to Fighter Weapons School and then is offered to stay on as an instructor. Fast forward to 94 and he was the OPS Group commander at Osan and Tom Cruise comes to the base doing a USO tour and for the Planet Hollywood Seoul opening. The typical VIP meet and greet happens and Tom comes to shake my hand and in front of the Wing Commander, Vice Wing Commander, 36th and 25th Squadron Commanders and a bunch of the pilots I call Tom Cruise an asshole for forcing my father to change his callsign. After Top Gun came out no self respecting Fighter Weapons school graduate and instructor could have that callsign. My father waited until he had taken over the 511th TFS at RAF Alconbury in '89 to change his callsign to Irish because nobody could stop him or give him hell for changing it lol. Tom was a sport about it and the popcorn machine he bought for the 36th is there to this day. My neighbor had just come to Hampton Roads from Osan flying vipers in the 36th so he was surprised I knew about the popcorn machine and the story behind it lol.
Mike ‘Irish‘ O’Conner is your father?
@Chem Busta Rhymes O'Connor but that he is.
Great story. Best wishes.
@Chem Busta Rhymes You know you're killing my curiosity with how you knew my old man's first name lol.
@@HalfUnder was he on the Shitty Hawk?
Two fighter pilots get together to react to Top Gun Maverick... Definitely one of the coolest videos I've seen of recent memory. Thanks for doing this, guys...
Apparently, pilots at Top Gun designed this as a plausible mission. They created defenses, told them which aircraft to use and choreographed the flight-action..
I'd assume a lot of creative freedom had to be taken. I don't ever recall there being such a thing as GPS jamming. Even if there was, F-35s could still be used.
@@Monarch683 GPS jamming exists, the Russians have mobile jammers the size of a moving van. They are reported to be reducing the accuracy of the JDAM's and other GPS guided munitions we've given the Ukrainians as well as the GPS based nav systems
@@pogo1140 Yes, but when the launching aircraft uses a sensor like TGP or radar to get an accurate position of the target relative to itself, the INS of JDAMs can be accurate enough to still hit within ideal CEP.
@@pogo1140 Even if there was, F-35s could still be used carrying laser guided munitions like in the movie. F-35s have their own integrated targeting "pod".
@@rusher2937 how? The target is in a bowl.
Awesome to know that 50% of the scenes were realistic! :D Tom definitely did his homework to make sure this was the best Fighter Pilot movie ever to be made! :D
This was great, and amazing chemistry between the two of you on screen! As someone who works for the RAF this all came across so true and highly relateable!
The other videos reacting to this movie are usually done by one person, having two people communicate back and forth on the matter is refreshing
Great video bro! Keep up the good work and thank you for your service.
I am no pilot, I was maintenance (avionics). I was lucky enough to get a backseat ride in an f16 while tdy. We stripped it down and pulled 9.2gs. Didn’t pass out but I was so close. It was only for a few seconds max and only knew it went there from the hud tape. It was the best 40ish minutes of my life. Went Mach and then found out the air brakes work really well as my head almost went into the ASHM. Tail number 169, bang bus! 524FS hounds baby!
Really enjoyed this break down, felt totally natural and great commentary!. 5:56: Loved that story about the bird strike!.
Notice how the range target looks like a giant dartboard (concentric circles?)
Here's a mind-blower for y'all: the ending is foreshadowed the first time Mav walks into Penny's bar.
You see a pilot playing darts. He hits bullseye first time. Then his friend covers his eyes and you don't see the outcome.
He also turns away while sinking a pool ball. I'm betting he snuck a missile up on that SU57 because he eyeballed it and never used his fire control radar.
That’s some great attention to detail, good eye
There is an air base in my city. And I've had the chance to watch this movie with real fighter pilots. How did I know they were fighter pilots? They made it very clear in the cinema (they entered the cinema in a flight of arms and came out in a flight of arms when they were leaving.) I wish you could see the brightness in their eyes and their cheerfulness like a child while watching this movie!
always good to hear the inputs from real air force fighters like you gents. thank you for making the movie a bit more realistic with the narration. many thanks.
5:56: Loved that story about the bird strike!
Me too. I've been an aviation hound my entire life and have never heard that a bird strike makes the plane smell like chicken. lol
Excellent, great to get a true insight on whether this could happen in real life.
Really enjoyed this break down, felt totally natural and great commentary!
I've been waiting for this video for a long time!
Kind of fun watching Cruise flopping around in the back seat.
That was great to hear you guys explain what really happens, Thanks for making this!
Wow! Congrats on the great book opening!
This was such an awesome video! Thank you guys!
Awesome, cheers Hasard ! I'll be watching it again thru your eyes now 😅
This was absolutely great, thanks so much guys.
That was amazing! I love the positive approach to the review. Not too cynical. Great video.
Can’t really split the throttles to that extreme in the F-14A, if any at all. Those TF30s will bite you in the ass. Wish they would’ve kept the wings swept forward more in the dogfight. It’s weird seeing an F-14 executing tight maneuvers with 68 degrees of sweep. They should’ve listened to some of Snort Snodgrass’s stories and used some of that material 😁
i've heard stories of f14's using split throttles but it was a pretty advanced technique that most guys never touched, i gotta imagine they knew that and only split them that far for camera effect, another youtuber who was an f14 RIO actually did the maneuver from the movie in dcs to call it out, all it does as presented in the movie is create an aileron roll, not the pivot maneuver they showed
Ward Carroll… love his vids! Yeah it was possible to split the throttles in the B and the D models with the GE engines, but not the A. Don’t think they really needed to do it either with how much rudder authority the Tomcat had. The rudder could help swing and point the nose pretty quickly in a pinch, especially when it was rolling over the top.
@@sledgehammerk35 yeah it's late and I blanked on his name, I think it was an interview with another tomcat pilot he did who mentioned a maneuver they used of pointing straight up until stalling, then push the nose over at almost no airspeed to get a "pivot in place" maneuver that's much closer to what the movie did, but again it didn't work in all models, the pilot interviewed was showing it to a student and the new sub model of the B they were in flat spun, it does work in DCS though...
You may be able to do more in F-14's today. The Iranians have been upgrading the radars and building new parts to keep theirs flying for decades now.
What a great video!! Seeing how much they "got right" makes me love this movie even more!
F14 is still one of my favorite planes. P47 being my favorite. SR71 my 3rd fav. I love big planes that take a beating and kick ass. My uncle served on the Nimitz as a Tomahawk mechanic. Even after all that still his favorite plane. I wonder if Hasard or the other guy got to drive one before they were retired. My son, E6 in the Air Force, got to go up in an F16 out of Las Vegas. Pilot let him drive for a bit. He’s got his license now trying to become an officer and fly tankers.
Loved this especially hearing them talk about their personal stories compared to the movie
I just started watching your channel about 4 hours ago, great time for a new upload
Its so cool listening to two of our heros talking about flying fighter jets.
great job guys; maybe do an episode on fighter pilots flying high performance GA aircraft for example lancair IVP or glasair III and give your opinions of it
Would've liked to see your thoughts on darkstar! Great video Hasard!
Really like this video and the 2 of you guy's input in to what actually happens in the air. 1st off Thank you to both of you for your service to our country. My dad was ordinence in the navy, my grand father commanded a sub in WW2 in the navy, and i almost joined the navy in 1993 out of high school. My dream was to always be a pilot, growin up, but when i was 18, i had a problem with authority 😂 I'm 48 now, but my favorite jet still to this day is the F4. Grew up loving that thing. Then iron eagle and top gun came out. Love the 14s and 16s. But the F4 will always be my favorite. But i love how you disect these monemts in this movie. Which i haven't even seen yet. Waiting for it to come out on regular tv 😂😂
Awesome work as always keep it up God bless you🙏❤
Great comments. Thank you guys for sharing.
I wish you guy had addressed 2 things 1) was their a better way to pull off this mission other than super hornets? I tend to think so. 2) the tandem targets runs. Do you REALLY need one plane to laser the target to have a second plane hit it? Especially at that range? Why risk 4 planes and 6 lives when you just do it with 2?
Great react. You mention Wild Weasels. Did you fly those missions? I had the honor as a weapons troop at Misawa AB when they changed their tail code from MJ to WW just before our first OSW deployment in '96.
I have read your book.... it's a master piece. It really helped me a lot in improving my decision making skills
I watched it 4 times in IMAX. What a kick ass ride!
Instant classic, what a wonderful movie. Even the Hollywood stuff. It was appropriate!
i just found your channel because its got recommended, very nice videos!
I always enjoy these kind of Reacting from People who actually did this kind of Actions.
I dont know if you take Recomedations, but how about you give the Jet Mission (with a F18 Hornet) of Battlefield 3 a try?
This is awesome Hasard and Slick
Great content and presentation.
When pilot "Slick" Baum talked about his plane smelling like chicken after a bird strike, I imagined the Thunderbirds diamond formation hitting a flock of birds at a show and the crowd being pelted by perfectly cooked chicken breasts, thighs and wings. "The Thunderbirds - Brought to you by 'Dan's Chicken Shack.'"
Loved it
Thanks to everyone working on this film to show just how amazing our US fighter pilots really are.
wish you had commented on the falling leaf maneuver the su57 did.
Most beautiful fighter aircraft _ever!_
Very cool!
10:11 Just like Jimmy Two-Times!!! "I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers."
I have read your books and they are awsome like your channel
To anyone reading this, the book is straight 🔥. Got it on Audible and was so pumped when I found out Hasard narrated it himself. Full of just awesome stories and interwoven with even better lessons. Sick and a 9.8/10 because I just wish it was longer. Into my 4th time running it back and I pick up new stuff every time. When is the next coming Hasard? We might be able to fill up the comments section enough to help your wife let you do another one? Keep doing your thing and inspiring us all to be better, more successful people. 🙏🏼
(Note to self - book)
@@ark-transport9626 I promise you will not be disappointed 🙏🏼
If you wouldn’t mind I would love to ask a quick question. In a few of your videos I’ve seen you use some sort of more advanced style helmet while flying sorties. Usually as far as I’m aware USAF pilots use the HGU-55 helmet but you seem to be using a model that’s similar to the new NGFWH, any comment? Thanks!
Hey Hasard, i miss your Reaction to the Cobra scene of the SU57. Do you think that this Manouver would be a present 🎁 to each Fighterpilot directly in front of you nose?
Greetings from Germany 👋🏼
“9g.. that’s not bad” lol 😂 god I love it
Such a amazing film over all one of the best made movies in the last 20
Years by far
One thing I found out is that Tom Cruise actually owns and flies a L39 Albatross and a P-51 Mustang and liscensed for helicopter and for acrobatic.
He didn't get to fly F18... he asked but Navy turned him down so he didn't actually fly it but pretty sure he could no problem.
God damn that black flight suit looks good
Thanks
Regards from Edwards man. Thanks for the solid content. SOLID book by the way!
4:04 When there talking about G locks, POV my war thunder pilot that has pulled 12Gs on a daily basis
oh wow, i just realized the dude in the movie was also in The Last Ship as the master chief
Terriffic. Thank you and those two pilots. Great stuff.
Ward Carroll said that on an A-Model Tomcat like that one was, "splitting the throttles" would've 100% compressor stalled the aircraft. It also showed the F-14 with ailerons, which he took issue with, seeing as *it doesn't have them*.
F-14 does not have ailerons, the correct image should have had the spoilers on the down ward moving wing be in the open position but the flaps would be up
Here's a good question. Has anyone ever suggested a remote override for the ejection seat of the pilot who is on g-lock? Is that too much of a liability issue?
I believe that it is possible to make an autopilot that will understand that the pilot has lost consciousness. The autopilot will take control of the aircraft and maintain altitude. At least on training planes.
yeah... most of the scenes were distracting for me as the voice was clearly recorded in the sound booth with no context. That's not the problem with that movie alone - every time I see a scene where an actor is running, fighting, or doing anything else physically strenuous and then talks over a radio etc.. I immediately pay attention to their voice. Because I know how hard it was for me to say anything after climbing a wall, or crawling 100 yards in a mud :)
Would of liked to have seen yall talk about that su-57 flip manuver!
That was fun, since I haven't seen the movie :)
Anyone know where to get that poster in the background of his desk?
i thought the targeting pod gimbal range cant see directly behind, let alone behind and above
Hey hasard looking to be a naval aviator any advice?
Fascinating video. id like to know what the F35 is like to fly. People say its easy. That always seems to be said about new planes. Apparently typhoon fly themselves but now the F35 is here apparently the typhoon is harder to fly. And how does it work with hover ability. Is that extra challenge to master as ive seen a F35 when that crashed at fort worth on you tube. Fortunately pilot was skilled and got out ok.
Top Gun, both movies were really awesome. Now granted, they are not going to have everything 100% correct. Hollyweirds are going to make it as close to being as real as it can be, but I believe due to security reasons, they can't show everything fully. But great video between you both, giving expertise on the difference between real life and movie. God bless all our men and women in our Military and our allies. Always we need to stay ahead of all nations in military technology!
So glad you finally got to watch Top Gun 😂
Just knowing that the F16 was completely CGI a year later proves how good the whole thing was well made.
At 10:40 what are you saying? Fitching Fighter? Never heard that term before.
The F16 and F18 have a G-Loc recovery system no?
GCAS
Late Block F-16s and F-35s have AUTO GCAS now.
Only a few of the f model Hornets have auto G-CAS.
F-22A also has AUTO GCAS being installed in the fleet.
Funny thing, my grandfather was an F-16.
I loved that movie.😊
still a great movie! the 1st one was huuuuge when I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot then, I had an old Atari joystick back in the day and id pretend i was in a tom cat ha
you guys have to watch this last dogfight scene but its an ace combat mission, the scene gets different when the sky speaks latin
no comment about taking the bird up again at 700 feet in that insane dive? :'D
Where’s the Kvochur’s Bell (the modified Cobra and rotating like a clock) reaction during the F-14 vs. Su-57? I don’t care how unrealistic and theatrical the maneuver was, it was epic.
The fact that every actor was in actual jets is what is crazy to me. Of course they're not the ones doing the maneuvers, although Tom Cruise may have due to his numerous licenses, everyone else is acting behind actual G's which is insane to me.
Nope, Cruise wasn't allowed either to fly, he does not have the necessary training in the F/A-18F.
@@Cinkodacscorrect, only plane he flew in the movie was the P-51 at the end since that's his personal plane. Everything else he's either in the back seat for actual flight or sitting on the ground pretending to fly
I have a question. Do you pilots use the cobra maneuver? Or is that Hollywood too? 🤔
When AAM reaches flares/chaf does it explode because of proximity fuze?
The air defense system should not see flares, it only sees the aircraft. This is the original mistake of the film, there is no point in looking for logic.
I wanted to hear some commentary on their mission. I was watching the movie, hearing the briefing where all they had to do was fly down into a low area, drop a bomb, and then go back up again. They're talking about it like it's so hard where really it's just low flying. It's not that hard. Why couldn't they have just dropped a bomb from 30k feet?
I can't tell if they know that tom cruise and his crew actually did everything flying jets the training they had 4 Sony cameras in the cockpit and they learned how to withstand that crazy amount of GeForce
I wished the addressed the bridge scene. It looked to wild to be true, but I know nothing about modern aircrafts
What call does Tom Cruise use at 1:45? I'm hearing "notch it off" or something like that. I can't quite make out what he says an I've seen other videos of fighter pilots saying the same thing after a round of radio contact.
"Knock it off". It's actually used in the Navy to mean the evolution is over (as well as like when your dad tells you and your brother to quit fighting).
How are you not gonna comment on the cobra/falling leaf maneuver?!
Maverick’s 3rd ejection he’s got to be 5’3” now!????🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I remember in our Bush War of 86/87 in Angola we captured a complete SAM-8 system. The US went crazy and pleaded that we give it to them. I am talking about the SADF fighting a proxy war against communism in Angola. Us, the South Africans took out more tanks and soldiers ever. Our G-5 155mm artillery systems were taking out those massive Antinoves on the runway!!! If I remember correctly we took out 3. Our artillery and 122mm rockes were shooting non stop for 24 hours at a time. Go and look for the Battle of Cuito Canavalle against the Angolans, Cubans, Russians etc. This was the biggest Tank Battle ever in Africa, surpassing WW2 and Rommel.
I actually just wanted to tell you about the SAM-8 system and got carried away 😂😂😂.
Whats the ROE for the emergency trap of a jet with damaged gear, Gear In or out? if they have the option...
Usually safer to have them come close aboard and eject and have the SAR helicopter recover them than trying to attempt the barricade nets.
😸 Hazard Lee Restored.
It smelled like chicken...LOL!! I never really thought about it but that makes sense...lol
I have got to see that movie.
7:45 the not realistic part is the Tomahawk flying faster than the Super Hornet 😅
