    The sound you hear demonstrates perfect temperature. That is exactly the sound I get when making my 7 1/2 size shot on my home made maker

      It's just from running it enough to know how fast to feed lead into the machine. I have also discovered that it will sound slightly different depending on what is being used for a coolant.

    Hi Hillsgun, Great video you look well organised and getting the job done, with very good results.
    The lead is it all 100 % lead or do you add and other items to your mixture such as Lino type, or wheel weights.
    would be interested to know.
    Many thanks Bill Miller Scotland.

      Hi Bill, thank you, Most of the shot I drop is reclaimed range scrap, I mix in lots and check hardness from batch to batch, If it varies to much I will add wheel weight although it is becomming harder to get. I do alloy with linotype, but I tend to hoard it for alloying for rifle bullets.

    Hello Hillsgun I had seen this set up 40 years ago advertised for sale , but did not have the time to buy and experiment with it .Great video
    My suggestion to you will be please use it outdoors , I see you are using it indoors. Your health is most important. You will end up with heavy metal poisoning.

    The fabric softener is a non issue as it gets reused. A little is lost when the shot is washed but that is all that is lost

    Thankyou for sharing your setup looks like your dialed in I am in the procces of sorting out Wheel Weights and getting it clean to start casting bullets and slugs never thaught about shot now I want to know do you recomend pure lead or add antimony and tin?

    • @hillsgun
      @hillsgun  2 года назад

      all depends on what you are casting and what you have available, for shot I want it to have some hardness

    Hey, that was fascinating to see! I didn't know folks were making their own shot! How much does someone need to shoot to make it affordable? How do you dispose of the used fabric softener?
    I have one more question for you. I'm new to reloading and would like to know how you chose the correct bushings for your Hornady? I'd like to load for shooting skeet, I know I'd like to shoot size 8 to 9 shot. Any advice on what books I need to read to choose the correct bushings for shot and powder? Thank you, again!
    Paul

      Hi Paul: cost will depend on what you have to pay for lead. Right now the cheapest I can find shot around here is about $50.00 a bag. I am using range lead that I have had for quite some time and am down to about my last 1000 pounds. scrap lead is about a buck a pound so it takes a while to recoupe the cost of a $500.00 investment plus there is a learning curve.
      Any of the reloading manuals for shotgun will have a bushing chart for the different brands of machines. Hornady shot bushings are marked with the size of shot and weight that they will drop which is a good starting point, and powder bushings are numbered which will corespond with the powder and weight they will drop as recomended in the reloading manuals.

    Outstanding video, what is the hardness of the lead that you use? Do you run the fabric softener at 100% ? What do you use to strain out the pieces that are too big? Where do I find the screen that will allow 7.5 through and nothing bigger?

    • @hillsgun
      @hillsgun  2 года назад

      Thank you Corey: I normally use range scrap for shot, hardness isn't that much of an issue for shot in my opinion and I normally use my shot on the trap range, If I am using a shotgun for something important I will usually use factory ammunition but 90% of what I do is trap or skeet and my shot works fine on registered targets. Yes the softener is full strength. I don't screen my shot, when it is running correctly it gives uniform size and is regulated by the size of the hole in the drippers, the pieces that are out of spec are easily picked out when I wash the shot before it is tumbled and graphited.

    Can I use only water or other else to mix with?

    • @hillsgun
      @hillsgun  3 года назад +1

      No, you cannot use water, there needs to be a precise amount of friction on the shot for it to form into a sphere, there are some other things that can be used such as oil specifically called for by the manufacturer but the fabric softener I am using is the least expensive material that I have found to give good results.
