  • Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson's Military Working Dogs, part of the 673d Security Forces Squadron, are a critical component of the mission. Trained to apprehend fleeing suspects, sniff out explosives, and conduct searches, these canine service members are highly trained. They work with their handlers daily, practicing the skills they need on the battlefield and at home station.

While you are still too young to enlist into the Air Force, it is never too early to start preparing. There are a few things you can do now to prepare for once you reach the require age. First study hard and graduate from high school. Get the best grades you can in all subjects especially English, Math and Science. This will help you improve your score on the ASVAB test which is required for enlistment. Say no to drugs and get an early start on physical conditioning are important steps in the right direction. And stay out of trouble. Law violations can delay and in some cases will disqualify you from joining the Air Force and taking advantage of the opportunities available. Starting early and being prepared are your best shot. Stay in contact with your Guidance Counselor and maybe we will see you in a few years.

If you join security forces what is the path to becoming part of a K-9 unit?

Kaira, Military Working Dog (MWD) handler K-9 is not an entry level career field. You must be in Security Forces for 2 years and be recommended by your supervisor and approved by the kennel master to apply for this career. The Security Force (SF) career field is responsible for all police activities associated with an Air Force base.
