"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on RUclips. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on RUclips, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I just watched a Humanist Report Segment on this, and can't express how much I loved watching Cornel and Cenk absolutely body-slam Morgan. They came angry, and unrelenting.

On a web-forum, I absolutely agree with you. I'm usually a very calm and collected guy when I'm debating someone, and I can pretend that the person I'm talking to isn't a psychotic POS. You tend to catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, and in that setting, where everyone is acting like a pseudo-intellectual with their egos worn on their sleeves, insults and making the other guy feel like they're going lose face if they concede in any way isn't a good idea. It's also a good idea to stay within your opponent's good graces when you're part of a community where you'll have to regularly deal with the same people.
In this instance, however, I think the best thing to do, in order to reach at least some of Morgan's viewers, was to call him a liar and a racist to his face. West and Cenk speak with guttural emotion that comes off as real. They both raise their voices and are unrelenting, but they never come off as unhinged or not in control of themselves. To be too civil in this case would allow Morgan to control the conversation and would only aid in further normalizing Morgan's position. They needed to be angry and show that there's quite a bit to be angry about, and they needed to call out all the blatant lying and bad framing to a mainstream audience without using kiddie gloves to deal with Morgan.
Now, if they were screaming to the point that the mic was busting everyone's ear-drums, and were dropping F-bombs all over the place---telling Morgan to sit and spin, I think that level of unhinged anger would have been way to far and would have just made them both look immature, but I think they both handled this with correct amount of emotion and passion.

These people dont THINK they are racist usually, even when they are. If the goal is changing people's minds, then yelling racist in this situation is guaranteed to never ever work. You may rally up anyone who already agrees with you, but those are not the people you are trying to convince. And the people who DISAGREE with you, are just going to get defensive and play the victim card, and cry about woke cancel culture or whatever, even if your categorization of them is completely accurate.
Just being correct isnt enough to convince most people. Most people are way too quick to jump to emotional responses, and thus you have to use specific arguments to convince them, while avoiding others which may evoke a defensive reaction.

What his problem is and what Cornell pointed out is that his coverage of Israel's atrocities doesn't enter into the equation when he later discusses the overall issue. The framing is always "Palestinians bad because x, y, z. Now lets debate. Before we start do you condemn Hamas btw?"

You get to reach a new audience. You can try to convince more people of your platform. The goal isnt convincing Piers, he's long gone. The point is to convince his viewers. Show them the other side of the discussion they probably havent actually properly seen due to their biased media.
You cant change people's minds if you're never speaking to people who disagree with you. You cant create real change if your cause isnt in the face of as many people as possible. So its not about Piers at all, its about his audience. Those are the people who need to be convinced.

Thats not the point. The point is it plays right into the defensive mentality of crying victimhood, and elicits emotional defensive behavior.
It doesnt matter how accurate it is, most people arent actually convinced by logical true things. They are convinced by emotional response. if you actually care about changing people's minds, then attacking someone in this way is almost always guaranteed to fail, no matter how accurate it is. It accomplishes nothing in the discussion. People who disagree wwith you are just going to see it as an attack, and emotionally and reflectively act defensively, which derails the conversation and ends any real discussion right there. And people who already agree with you may agree with you more, but they arent the ones youre trying to convince.
Now, after the interview, Calling him a racist would be fine, but DURING the interview, it just derails the discussion. Like Kyle said, after this point the entire conversation became about whether or not he was racist, RATHER than the fucking children being slaughtered in Gaza. Thats the point. The entire conversation got derailed.
So its not about it not being TRUE, its about how tactically its a very ineffective way of changing people's minds. Which is the entire point of doing interviews like this, to change people's minds.

People have a right to respond however they want, but if their goal is to convince others, then getting mad and calling someone a racist is an objectively bad way to achieve that goal. Again, thats just a fact.
This is a well documented effect in psychology, and yes, its really annoying, but thats just the reality. Its not that people shouldnt feel angry or upset, but rather that you should keep your goals in mind when you are in a discussion. If you give in to gut instinctual emotional responses, you may fail to achieve the entire purpose of why you are having that discussion to begin with.
And this is true no matter your skin color. This is just how humans tend to act, we're driven by emotion far more than logic most of the time. And its important to keep that in mind if you actually want to convince people of anything.
