Trying to break an Audi allroad in half

- So I go away for what I thought was a relaxing Easter weekend on a farm in the Cederberg with some friends. Turns out the farmer is a 4x4 buff and has laid out a challenging technical course... He was very keen to see what my allroad could do - and so was I!
Unfortunately I was too busy driving and trying to keep up with him to get much footage, but for this obstacle I asked the farmer's neighbour to video me going into and out of a ditch to test suspension and traction control...
I struggled on some of the slow steep sandy sections (wrong tyres!) but was pleased a couple of days later when he had some visitors from the Cape Town Landrover Club - and they couldn't do those sections either!
Well I did read somewhere that the Audi allroad is the only all-wheel drive "softroader" that has successfully completed the Landrover proving grounds course...
Yes, I also had to replace a front air spring. When the other front spring started to go, I imported a full set of aftermarket replacement air springs (with lifetime guarantee) from Arnott Industries in Florida. They're a solid piston-type design rather than the original audi Kevlar bag design, and seem much more reliable - no problems yet!
I had 3 of these Audi Allroads in a row. And they have been simply the best cars I ever had. The last one I got about 3 months prior production end of this model and I prolonged the leasing contract as long as I could (thats 5 years). Unfortunately the later allroads where merely only A6's with some plastic decoration attached to them.
"Selling an Audi Allroad, one lady driver from new":))'
+Sergey Kryuchkov and she only drove to church on Sundays!
She had one leg shorter, never gone full throttle
Amazing that you can still open de door and close it again, very stiff body. Good work by Audi.
@nousernamesification The Audi quattro traction control is what they call "destructive traction control" - it sends power to all the wheels all the time, but if the ESP traction control circuitry detects that one (or more) of the wheels are spinning faster than the others (i.e. they have lost traction) then it will apply the ABS brakes on that/those wheels. It's a constant process of searching/adapting which is why you'll see a wheel spin for a bit, then stop spinning.
As far as I know, Audis don't have lsd on the front and rear axles. The "Torsen" used on A4 and bigger versions (Haldex on A3 and TTs) splits the power (50/50 on allroads and A6 quattros), but only ESP controls the speed of each wheel, breaking if necessary. The Haldex system is a false AWD, since when not slippery, only front wheels are driven.
Nice, didn't know that the All-Road ever made it down their. We have a ton here in Colorado and they can be had for cheap due to their maintenance issues but if you know how to fix em then they are nice cars. Not sure if I'd off road with one. I like the V8 version but the 2.7t is nice for the thin air here. We also have cheap gas so these cars are pretty nice if you not commuting a ton of miles.
Best overland rig I’ve ever owned !!!
Looks like I nice fishing spot
Probably the best car in the world , 2 in one car : offroad SUV for climbing and a race car for freeway . All that because of quattro torsen differential, bi turbo engine, adaptive air suspension, ....
@bokkeman123 the answer to all those questions are yes and yes, also that's with the v6 that gets 22 mpg on the highway, also they have the raptor, that would have flown over this little drop at 130 mph
I will say, the All-Road was a super car .. but one thing, usually the only thing, that I would see it in the shop for, in the states, was left front air shock rupturing...looks sweet sitting that low, but hell to drive...aside from that, the car itself was great...The only All Roads in the states at that time were all A6 variants...I think the A4 variant is now available in the states, but I don't much care for it...prefer the larger A6 variant, and the Q7 4.2
are you missing the point, he can open and close the door, that's craftsmanship.
ha nice summer tires!!
Audi's built like tanks
The traction control only operates when there is a large enough differential between wheel speeds, and maybe not at all under little/no throttle input.
agt155 Yes, traction control on these systems usually kicks in at around 5 miles per hour...can't rely on that on idle speed! That's also one of the reasons it's not a true off-roader. but the system works excellent in snow..
@nousernamesification Also, this explains why the cameraman was laughing: I was saying from the driver's seat that the traction control is ON and that therefore the rear wheel that was in the air should not be spinning - but clearly it was (slowly). The ESP must keep sending power to a wheel even when it has detected that it has lost traction - otherwise how would it know when that wheel has gained traction again?
Respect.
2.7L V6 Turbo Petrol? Wrong engine for offroading man..
2.5L V6 TDI ia the better choice
@honeybearlove65 OK honeybear, this was never intended to be an "audi is better than ford" discussion. I was replying to Levibetz's specific reference to the farmer's clapped out old Ford pickup. And I half hoped that my reference to the supreme importance of Cup Holders would make it clear that my tongue was firmly in my cheek. Lesson learned: subtlety is wasted in online forums - especially youtube comment threads!
BTW this Audi's twin turbo V6 puts out 184kW and gets 20mpg
Official Figures.. I checked in quite a few places.. But its still 5 MPG Better according to your calculations.. BMW Have made the new M5 30% more fuel efficient than the predecessor.. But if you can afford an M5, i'm sure fuel efficiency isn't much of a worry.
I remember my uncle's e39 530i M sport LCI.. In reality it did nearly the same as the new M5.. Man I miss that car.. But it looks like a 530d soon... Hopefully :D
Just so that I can be a noob as well..
BMW M5 (F10) With its V8 and Twin Turbo's produces 552BHP And manages 28.5 MPG!!!
@Levibetz Yes, but does that old Ford have all the modern conveniences? Can it cruise at 200km/h? Can it raise/lower its suspension and, most importantly, does it have cup-holders??
I have an C5 A6 and i know what it means to run an Audi. Maybe you can tell us how much does it cost to change the Adaptive suspension on that Allroad, how much is the difference for the lifetime oil changes( Full synthetic for 2.7T and mineral for the truck), what about timing belt change? Allroad is very nice car but not for All roads :)) Nowadays you can easily find cheap SUV's that will easily do 200km/h, will have good road and off-road comfort and cup holders! ;)
2.7 Bi-turbo..nice, but wasn't enough power/torgue for me, haha..prefer the 4.2 bi-turbo .. the new 3.0 supercharged isn't too bad either..
sorry bro but that doesnt look to bad of a road..... that`s the level of our usual country roads from where i live
Why would you change all suspension for? If it's good, it's good, if not, only centraly pump is broken. And I'm really intrested what is that SUV that have quality of audi can also go off road like this and go 200kmh+ that does not cost 3 times this audi. BTW if u lower this audi, u will feel like driving a6 with sport suspension, no suv can do that.
there are folk on here who could show you far more entertaining ways to break one of these in half...
It's a two wheel drive station wagon from the National Lampoons Vacation?
nice video thanks :)
when you own an Allroad, you do Allroad things...
Trying to break it in half..? Search for "Jeremy Clarkson destroys Lada" and you will see how to break a car in half.
how is this quattro? :D only one wheel spins, is it broken or what
j'adore!!!!
are this car has some engine problems,i wana buy it and jsut wana know,so is somebody knows cars problems, say to me thx (i mean 2.5tdi 132kw)
jeeps with quadradrive do that too :)
@USAFadrenalineJunkie Where will your Subaru take it ;)? ... (And who does care, what _you_ take *lol*?)
u actualy know that there is all kinds of AWD systems? I belive the brand "jeep" uses the real 4x4 drive not hybrid of all kinds of today cars.
why do you have a 2.7
I want to buy one Sergey Kryuchkov
why say 184 kw when u can say hp??
no difflock?
+Wishnu Adji Adji The Audi allroad has no difflock. The traction control brakes the wheels that slip so that power goes to the ones with traction. But as you can see in the video, it still sends a bit of power to the wheel with no traction to see if it is starting to bite.
@Lofote do you feel clever?
@bmwfan4lyfe No it's not.
Let's let a Subaru do the same
#bendgate
haha LOL
А слабо точно так же на верх подняться?
@USAFadrenalineJunkie Naaah, not as clever as you, don't worry ;)...
Dutchie, dis nie n bakkie nie.
Not a real 4wheel drive because when one wheel lifts it just spins that wheel and doesnt engage any other wheels, he only made it down by slipping the brakes, he wouldnt have been able to go backwards after his rear wheel lifted. That Ford could have done,!
+ijustwanttoseetitty Audi Quattro, look it up
+jody024 this is not an original quattro though is it? As they did have real four wheel drive.......look it up.
ijustwanttoseetitty all All Roads are Quattro
It's permanent 4wheel drive so yeh it is proper quattro.
audi 4x4 is so bad for off-road. its mainly to street driving with snow and ice conditions.
1:40 chuj ;D
lol what a joke
