What 21.7 HOURS GRINDING a Rusty Barge gets you!! - Episode 11

- Yup 22 hours of grinding went on here! That was over 4 days.
Its The Final Push before we head straight to drydock in the first week of January. Our aim is to try get the top half of the boat primed with one coat so that when we are in the drydock we can focus on other things other than painting. look out for the before and after
Your videos caught my eye. I was a "Hull Maintenance Technician" for the US Navy. I did maintenance on ship and submarine hulls during my time in the Navy. Make sure if you put aluminum window frames in make sure you have a gasket between the frames and the steel hull or you will get " Galvanic Corrosion". The aluminum will corrode into a white powder over time.
Thank you 😊
I am enjoying watching your progress and your great sense of enjoyment over this project. A few comments to a few of the naysayers who have been critical of your approach. Yard time (or dry dock time) tends to be costly. In the Navy a great deal of effort is put into preparing for the work in the yard to maximize the repairs and minimize the drydock cost (time). That preparation includes just what you are doing - scraping and painting. “Sandblasting” can be extremely damaging and can cause greater damage to the surface than hand work. The fact that you are grinding off the paint and corrosion gives you much greater control and reduces the amount of potential repairs. Corrosion will appear on any metal surface over time. I think that you have delayed that process considerably doing just what you have been doing. It is good to that you are vacuuming up the grindings to reduce the amount of paint flakes (probably lead based) into the water. It is the hull where your yard time will be most revealing, productive and cost efficient. The fact that this barge, now narrow boat, is still afloat after so many years attests to its water worthiness. Please keep up the good work and ignore the naysayers. People often forget when they fire a comment that not everyone has an unlimited budget. Your yard time will help you considerably and I do not see any downside to what you have been doing so far.
Thank you so much for your kind words. You are 100% correct we don’t have unlimited Budget so we are doing what is possible. I’m glad you can attest to our methods thanks so much for your input :) We are actually going into the dry dock very soon so we will finally get to see below the water like. thanks for watching we appreciate your support!! 😃
I love seeing comments like this, as opposed to the negativity. In my humble opinion, if a couple decides to spend quality time together doing something that they can enjoy and be proud of for decades, I'm totally all for it! I've spent time on projects that people with negative attitudes and ugly personalities had ugly things to say about. Other people's opinions are simply none of my business.
@@talltom1129 Thanks Tom we appreciate your kind words :)
@@DuoVagari just keep being you!
I love your positive “can do” attitude. Your enthusiasm is infectious - don’t let the detractors deter you from your quest!
Thanks Peter we will do our best! Thanks for watching :)
Just some good advice, I had a 35’ sailboat for years , always keep a good hand of tools on board, Sockets, Spanners , wrenches and etc ! It helps . In open water it’s a must !😊
You can never have enough tools and the basics are not expensive. A metric socket set, a set of imperial open-ended spanners, vice grips, adjustable spanners small & large and adjustable pliers. Now you can fix anything instead of ruining it. It is soooo satisfying.
A tad risky if you cannot secure the boat against thieves, though. Once the boat has reached the point where one can lock it securely it's a different story.
I love reading some of the comments, it reminds me of the fast show when Harry Enfield played that old man who kept saying ( you don't want to do it like that, you need to do it like this) . And to think of their veins popping out of their neck in frustration 😂😂. Guys, you're doing a fab job, plus you're making great viewing.
Well done you two, little by little she is looking more loved and less neglected and today's video was a massive step forward that more loved look.
Thanks Scott hopefully we can keep momentum and see some serious improvements once we get to the Dry dock.
Hi guys, wow what an incredible transformation you done a fantastic job you should be proud of yourselves I noticed you are getting a few negative messages. Don’t worry about the haters most of them just sit on their arse and don’t do anything but criticise other people or having a go. Really appreciate you guys what you’re doing , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🧑🏾🦽
Thanks Logan getting a comment like this really gives us the boost we needed. Thank you 😊
The negative comments are mostly from boaters who know what they are talking about. To not get the boat surveyed before starting work is absolute madness. Theres been lots of other rookie mistakes as well, which people are commenting from experiene on. Unfortunately, we've all seen this sort of thing before and know how it can end.
@@FloydsFripperies i’ve been a boat owner for many years and I never criticise anyone that are doing any reconstruction because sometimes you have to learn by your own mistakes so that’s where I am at you might be able to criticise about everyone everything people do, but sometimes they won’t learn
Most people wouldn’t get off the big fat arse and have a go at restoring boat like this to be today. Too bloody lazy to have a go. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see the future. We got some good plans. Keep up the good work sorry about the negativity idiots
@@bishopkinlyside8477because most people who have the skill to do this wouldn't. And the ones that would wouldn't be doing it like this. I'm on renovation number 2 😏
Hi love the videos it's like buying the worst house on the block and turning into a lovely home 😊
It’s great to see your videos again and your smiles and happy vibes again .
Awesome job to you both, this is your journey never let anyone stop you or cloud your day with their negativity. I’m proud of you both .
Thanks So much!! All the best for the new year !
You are both getting stuck in working hard,it's going too be amazing once finished...Merry Christmas too you paul
So enjoyed this episode. What amazes me is there are not really more bad places like the ones rust killer was used on since this such an old boat. Stuff happens like broken pull ropes but yet you both go on. I always look forward to your episodes, so entertaining. Also I have the sense you are working on canal boat history and what a floating home it will be.
Massive Improvement now for sure well done Both you are getting there More and More you making the Boat Loved Good Work Great Vlog Thanks
Thanks Anthoney :)
I am enjoying watching these renovations, wish I had done so many years ago to old now at 67
You are so positive and you do have the best attitude with all that you do.
Awesome work guys, its surprisingly satisfying wire brushing and removing rust.
OMG you guys are doing a great job, looking good and getting there, the end result it will be awesome.
Fantastic it's starting to look fabulous well done guys. And stay safe. And not forgetting sausage .👍👍👍
You're really making good progress. I salute you!!
Just started following you guys. That old canal boat looks quite solid ,to me. It's going to be awesome! I have rebuilt three sailboats myself, and the work is some of the fun as well. It' s very satisfying when you complete a project, large or small. One step at a time. Dan S. From Michigan & Texas USA
Loving watching this project materialise, keep going guys, really enjoying this...
Wow what Project one bit of advice..do it your way the way you feel comfortable. We will keep watching and supporting you both on your long journey 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You two have taken on quite a challenge. For a couple just starting out you either come from a family or means or you work for what you want. You two look like you will get a nice narrow boat out of things once the major work has been done. Best of luck to you both.
Thanks very much we definitely work hard for what we want. Thanks for watching:)
Incredible progress guys! Just a quick tip, if the pull cord on the generator breaks again, and you got a socket that fits the flywheel nut on the generator, you can use your cordless drill to start it. just make sure the drill is going in the same direction as if you were pull starting it.
Great job guys, the hard work will be worth it much more than buying one that's already done. looking forward to your next instalment.
Wow great work today. it takes a lot of time and work to do what Y'all did today.
I am sorry the weather was getting on the way/causing frutration with grinding rust and priming but, considering all those unplanned delays, you two still accomplished some excellent work! Thanks for taking us (the viewers) along!
Thanks Bill it has been a challenge but we have tried to remain positive and push through:)
great new music for me to listen too, thank you, good job
Well done guys , keep up the good work, it’s looking much better ,
If I was there I would love to help" no charge" I love repairing things" You two are doing great' can't wait for out-come" ❤
Greetings from Portland Maine,U.S. Merry Christmas!🎉🥳👍👍
Merry Christmas to you and your family🎄
Once again you amaze me with your enthusiasm brilliant what a team hard workers when you both set out todo stuff you get on with it hope you’re proud of yourselfs as I’m sure all you’re onlookers are great job ❤
Wow, thank you! Yes indeed nothing like hard work to satisfy the soul. :) we appreciate your support!! Happy Christmas 🎄 hope you have a wonderful time and all the best for the new year!
It’s hard work but it pays off, looking better, and better!
Wow fantastic Guys well done
Thanks so much
Love your energy and positivity. Nothing seems to daunt you and each video leaves me with a smile on my face...😀
You make a very good job for your future. And ,of course, for your home later on.
Very respektfully Greetings from Germany, from the North Sea Coast.
Thank you very much!
Lots of prep work a bit at a time and your on your way. Least the weather wont go anymore damage so stay at it. interesting watching it progress, although you may need a better generator or two.
Just get it out of the water and on land and invest some money in having it sandblasting so you’ll have a good clean steel keyed base to do any necessary repairs for needed and quickly epoxy prime onto before rust starts to come back.
But I definitely would sandblast it so the paint job especially in sweet water can potentially be okay for the coming twenty five to thirtyfive years.
Doing it in an amateur hands tool way will eventually cost you lots more work for way less quality results.
Personally I would have it all sandblasted and painted with windows put in there so I could take all the time I would need to finish the interior and engine room with necessary systems.
shame they never did :(
Love Jack Mills Cafe by the water! Thats also our fav fishing spot! How awesome! Hope to come across you guys soon one day!!! ❤
All the very best guys! Don’t listen to the negative Nancys, set your own path in life and go for it.
Just subscribed, great project and what a lovely boat it will be when you are finished.
I bought and lived on a 60 ft narrow boat and with my wife and dog lived on her for only 1 year unfortunately.
Based at Crick marina near Rugby we mostly cruised the Oxford canal, my reason for going narrow was I didn`t want to be restricted to the broader canals and rivers mostly in the south but i am sure if we had bought a wide beam boat we would still be living on the canal.
I will be watching your progress with great interest and wish the two of you plus your lovely dog (who will love the canal system) all the best in your endeavours.
Coming along nicely, your gaining experience along the way that’s good 👍👍👍👍🎄🎄🎄👌🐶
Thanks 👍
Well done you two and Barley ❤. Take no notice of the "know it alls ". ❤
She’s not a rust bucket anymore! I understand you trying to get as much protection as possible on her, especially with your weather.
BTW, we got the starlink installed two days ago! We were on a waiting list for months to get it and then had to wait longer to get someone to install it. But in less than thirty minutes it was running like a dream! It took longer setting it up because I couldn’t remember my password 😂🤣😂. The central part of the USA was the last part of the country to get starlink. Which is amazing because the rest of the world already had it, lol.
Having one on a boat is very expensive because boats are mostly on the move but for a house they’re great!
You guys are doing really amazing. Can't wait to see it finished ❤
Thank you so much Debbie :)
Nice one guys love watching what your doing 😁👍👍👍
Awesome, thank you!
Loving the videos guy's keep em coming. Australia
Great job! Don't forget to get a new pull rope and some socket wrenches to repair the generator. And while you continue to clean and paint make sure you make notes as where welding needs to be done so when your in the boat yard they can do those things you find
A wire brush wheel on your grinder would work better for taking off the old paint and stripping it down to the metal only a suggestion and have a blessed day from Canada arnprior Ontario
Good work im Impressum greetings from germany berni😊👍👌
Love what you are doing, I have introduced myself previously but forgot to say... get yourself a magnet on a rope, apart from being great fun dredging for whatever you pull up out of the canal it could save you a small fortune on windlasses... I know from experience!
Great progress!!
You know, you can get a wire brush to fit the grinder and the are a great bit of gear. When you start your genny don't let it run for to long with the choke on. All your doing is carbonising up the internals. Your a lucky man. Not many women know how to use the tools designed for them, ie Vaccuum cleaner[ chuckle] but also power tools. Its great to see how enthusiastic the pair of you are.
Great job!
Good night everyone good work on your barge bult and merry Christmas and a happy new year from david
Looking better and better.
Hola! Los miro desde Cordoba, en el centro de la República Argentina!, les envío un fuerte abrazo! Está quedando hermosa!
I find. Doing small sections at a time.. descale, sand, clean, primer. Then move to next section.. this way the metal doesn't restart rusting. Starting from top of roof and work down ,not to contaminate a prior cleaned and prepared surface.
hope you can ignore the critical folks. your energy and passion are admirable.
Thanks Chris 😀
Keep up great work thanks 😊
Thanks, will do!
Just started following as I’ll be buying a boat but fortunately one that’s already ready to just move in and cast off. Waiting to see how the windows fit in. I’ve used an alcohol based heating system in a caravan and they are really good if you are going down that route.
Nice thanks we appreciate the support, Best of luck with the boat purchase hopefully we see you out on the water :)
@@DuoVagari wide or narrow is something I really need to look at due to how much I can navigate etc.
@@madmikesworld5713 it’s a hard choice for sure but you may be surprised by how much is achievable with the wide beams. I guess it comes down to how far you intend to travel.
I love your enthusiasm but I would wait for the result of the Hull test before waiting for your funds and energy.
I had once a steel sailboat, you habe to paint steel at least 3 times, otherwise the layer thickness will be too thin and will rust again
you get a nice boat, I did the same over 4,5 years with much fun 35 years ago.
Maybe buy a socket set? 😉If that was me trying to fix the generator with the improper tool ..... I'd likely have tossed it in the water, you are a patient man!
Well done guys getting better every episode, when is the date of your inspection again? Fingers crossed for you both!! Cheers 🍻
Thanks Paul we appreciate the support we hoping to get it surveyed early January.
@@DuoVagari good luck to you both Happy new year cheers 🥂
So kind of you guys grinding next to someone’s nice boat 😢
Lucky We met our neighbours and they are lovely.
A lot of work ! But the two of you are doing great 👍🏻 remember someday the both of you will be sitting on the deck drinking gin and tonic and watching the next crew work on there boats . 😵💫 hahahaha.
Old rust protection paint does often contain lead, so it is recommended to wear a good breathing mask to avoid lead poisoning by little lead particles you breathe in your lungs. By the way: Sandblasting works much better and quicker than grinders.
Do not sand ⏳ it on the canal , some of the old paint has lead in it, sand blast it on the hard , you may be prosecuted , the swans , ducks etc ., could be poisoned .
I’m giving you permission to sand on the canal !
Howdy
I just found your channel this morning and binge watched
this project. So far, So good.
I know nothing of canal boats but I’m finding this interesting.
I live on the southern tip of Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana, USA.
I’ll watch and learn.
Thanks for documenting this project.
Oh by the way what’s her name?
Awesome, thank you for watching glad your enjoying:) we named it Barleys barge
Don’t take any notice of the other crack pots on here. Do your own thing,we are enjoying your progress.
Thank you 😊
And where you taking this lump when its done. Its to big for enjoying on the cannal. It needs bow thusters..make life easyier. Better to take it down London as a live abourd. After dry dock. If that is possible these days. Hope the oxide was water based. In that damp weather. Good luck. A lot of work..
I would like to live close to you so I can help with this work. Unfortunately, I live far away, in Brazil. I believe in this project and I'm sure it will be a wonderful boat. Due to its size, you will be able to have great accommodation and have a lot of fun. Congratulations!
Oh that looks SO MUCH NICER than the rusty graffiti-covered side! Work, work, work, but in the end, you will have a home you did yourself that others admire. What could be better than that? :)
Hi, so it’s the first week of the new year, when is the narrow boat expected to arrive in the dry dock? Like you, we can’t wait to see what the hull looks like. Fingers crossed, all there is , is some scraping, sanding and painting of the hull. Cheers to you both.
You did a right proper job destroying the pull start housing on the generator. Do yourself a favour and invest in the right tools, all you need is a socket set. It will cost less in the long run and you won’t need to come back and fix it again later.
This is true unfortunately we were far from home and couldn’t get our tools. This being said the pull start is already faulty so needed to be replaced we just did a patch job to get us away for the day. Thanks for watching
it seems you have been reported so good luck on that when you get into dry dock try and do the painting as for size there will some restriction some the canels there are some good books that the crt do i believe and cruising the cut is a good channel to follow for information 😊😊
try using a battery drill with a socket on the end onto the flywheel nut ( electric start and no more pulling )
Wow, if you just have the right tool for the job, it goes so much easier
Hey guys I like what you're doing to the boat but when you haul it out you're going to really need to sandblast it twice a first sandblast should be course sandblasting it'll loosen up a lot of stuff you can't move sanding discs like you guys had the second sandblast should be fine sandblast it'll smooth it out the metal and open the pores up so when you spray primer and it should be epoxy primer two coats and you should let the first primer dry for like 4 to 5 days before you spray the second one then you're whatever paint you're going to put on it you want to put another two to four coats and you'll see a difference when you do the sandblasting you'll find things you thought you got done am I suggestion inside and out especially inside the boat knowing how Rusty and how much water was in there the other thing is we want to make sure that for the bottom of the boat inside have metal work done figure out exactly how you're going to set the boat up and have metal passages put into the bottom so you can route your wiring and your plumbing and all the other good things and your Center bilge and for about that big I bet anything you should have 2 bilges pumps a primary a secondary because that's a big boat. And once you primer the inside of the boat then you can spray from it was the really good closed spray foam that'll make it really comfortable have a great Christmas
good luck... i know perfectly this, i should have started with the hull !
May I suggest starlink Internet will work anywhere and is good speeds also the videos are great enjoying the channel
Poor little Barley doesn't want to miss even one second of what you guys are doing, but the poor little fellow doesn't have a dust-mask, so his surveying isn't very healthy for him.
It's very hard grinding of lead based paint. Poisonous. Being an ex sandblaster, un 5 hours blasting would have done the hole boat. 😂😂😂
Like watching your vids.keep up good work.looking forward you putting down floor.big job.know you 2 handle it .thnx 12/26/23
Thanks Joel we will be doing it very soon :)
please let it sandblast and a epoxy coat, maybe expensive but u get angry on yourself if u not do it later...
More likely that they are doing a flip, if you were going to keep it you would do it properly and have it sandblasted. What they are doing will need to be redone in a couple of years including striping out any interior they have put in,
doing a great job each especially the cute girl 😂😂😂😂❤❤
Hi guys, not sure if you've ever disclosed this but would you mind sharing what you snapped her up for? and what sort of cost is going into her so far?
I'd be interested to know as someone who used to imagine renovating her 😊
Oh by the way have a great Christmas and a very happy new year 🌹🙏
My have missed this guys but wonder if you have budget for the completion of this project 🙂
Thanks Terry, You haven’t missed it but we do have a budget video coming out soon :)
Phosphoric Acid as a rust converter and inhibitor and primer.
How come pain and paint share the beginning?
I, for sure, will follow your restoration to the perfect (?) end
Thanks Vadmal we appreciate the support!
When are you going to dry dock the boat.
Y’all need to invest in a couple of vise grips some small ones and some medium ones
Where’s the next episode , looks like a great project
Watching the vid now
So you are not going to sandblast it?😊
So you said that this would be your new home, do you own your home or flat or are you just renting it for the time being? Will the boat become your proper residence?
Socket set from Halfords are cheap 😂 and you can get wider rollers and narrower brushes
