Kakamega is Kenya’s only tropical rain forest and home to 480 species of birds. But this biological treasure house is under threat from an exploding local population. Ernest Musotso has fathered 30 children and like his neighbors, he’s been nibbling land at the edge of the forest. But even Ernest understands that old customs will have to change if the forest is to survive. Kakamega’s rainmakers and forest guides are trying to save the last stand of ancient indigenous trees, and make sure the beautiful birds who live there, don’t go silent.

I love nature and I feel sad for our forest and the ecosystem therein. I don't understand how in modern days someone can sire so many kids with limited resources then ask the government to intervene and allocate them forest land. Planting trees artificially cannot be a substitute for a natural forest for the needs of man. We can plant trees but we cant replace animal diversity

The luhyia culture does not promote giving birth to children anyhow but when people mess up, they blame the culture. what is lacking in Western Kenya for some residents is lack of exposure to the outside world, they just look at their neighbors and compete among themselves-who has sired many children. This has perpetuated high dependency culture.

They need to get land use property rights so that they can switch to high yield crops like hemp, cannabis, mango trees, grape tomatoes, things they can cultivate for most of the year, that will not only feed their families but capitalize on the surplus, they also need to expand what they do for a living, why are they all still farmers, where are the weavers, the black smiths, drs nurses, teachers, SHOP OWNERS? They should be beyond the stage of just farmers. The forest and wild life it self should also attract tourists with tourist dollars to spend if they can keep the area safe. All things that would support the people and keep the forest safe. I should go run for president of kenya.

Too many people, too many children. And the land stays the same size. The only thing that will save Africa is free birth control for everyone, and eduction.

Firstly Just stop encroachment secondly some traditional teachings should be dealt with, thirdly education and awareness should be spread to the vast community to cub literacy concerning the forests and their ecosystems.
Aberdare and Mau Summit almost dealt with by encroachment...

The government should not listen to the cries of those people to be given forest land. How do you sire 30 kids without a plan and now cry for forest land. You want to cut natural trees and replace with artificial forest, what about the wildlife

Sounds like someone should have kept it in his pants. Most people don't go having multiple children if they don't have the means to care for them. Unless you are in America, the more kids you have the more rent we pay, the more food stamps you get
