Hey JP. The Yamaha LL36 guitar is one of dream guitars to own. Especially since it is handcrafted by 12 or 13 craftsmen under the direction of the master luthier, there is something unique about it. It has a nice deep end to it, I find which isn't overpowering while still maintaining the mids and highs of the guitar. The guitar is aesthetically pleasing to look at. Hopefully, one day I get to try one. I live in Toronto, Ontario by the way
I’ve had a Yamaha LL16 for a few years, and truly enjoyed it. I finally came across an LL36, and bought it. I still love the 16, but oh my, the 36 is astounding. When played side by side, the depth and complexity of the tone on the 36 jumps out of the guitar. Love the smell and feel of the nitro finish on the 36 as well.
I really love the way you so obviously love these guitars, friend. It's the mark of a diamond in your character, your appreciation of artistry and beauty.
Thanks for your series on these JP. Based on your glowing review, along with other reviews I’ve seen that show how wonderful these guitars sound and play, I just placed an order for one. Six month wait!
Sitting in front of me, a Huss and Dalton Custom OM Sinker Redwood top, Indian Rosewood b/s; a Lakewood M32 CP and a LL36. They all sound very beautifully and differently. Among them, LL36 is the lowest in prize but it's the biggest, sweetest, warmest, most important, it's most pleasant to my ears although my younger son loves the Lakewood most which has a very unique voice, a lot people misunderstood it doesn't sound good as it doesn't sound in the common way but it sound truly beautiful too. But I have to be honest to myself, LL36 is the best, at least among the three.
I must say I just happend on your channel. Love guitar but have fell out. Frustrated with my results after 7 years of lessons but just love you playing, channel, and featured guitars. Thank you so much!!!!!!
hey j p i have this ll36 2015 model. i am a guitar teacher in israel. this guitar is a workhorse to me. play and sound like god guitar. i just love it.
I recently played one of these alongside an FG9M and loved both for different reasons. I ordered the FG9, but now I'm on a mission to pick up an LL36. These handmade Yamahas absolutely deserve a seat at the table.
Thank you for all of your informative videos. You brought me back to Yamaha. I love your playing. You bring out everything in a guitar that it can give. I’m thinking LL36 or LL56. I don’t have a guitar shop to try these out here in Thailand where I live , so I am going by your review. 56 just might be too much money. Thanks again.
I own a 1975 or1978 Yamaha L 25 A.I purchased it new in the late 70`s.Great guitar.Loud and even sound...very easy to play....Not sure what it is worth today but when I got it I paid around $1500.00 here in Saint John N.B.
I had an L-25AT (amber tint).- it was perfect, except I didn't like the oval fret markers and have never been a fan of the standard Yamaha pick guard - sold it and just bought a limited edition Japan custom shop LA-28E that's on the way with snowflakes and no pick guard with the brown leather signed by the single builder....that said my L-25AT was brilliant.
Thank you for the reviews of these L series guitars! - I came upon this video after stumbling upon a used LJ36 at a Guitar Center and ended up purchasing it. I was trying to look up information on upgrading the bridge pins and was wondering if you had a recommendation on replacement bridge pins that don’t require any modification to fit this guitar.
I did not realize these guitars have non scalloped X bracing. Love that low end rumble in Drop D. I just looked on reverb and I see three for sale, two in France and one in Japan. I’m in Oregon state (USA) and I’ll need to call a dealer to see if one can be sourced. I do own Martin, Guild, Alvarez and Blueridge and I might have to add one of these LL36’s to my Harem. 😂 Very beautiful instrument. Thanks J.P. (Post script) hope you are on the mend sir.
Your playing is extraordinary and yes the tone and musical shapes that guitar produces is unbelievable. I have played some great Yamahas over the years. Not to the extent you have but always amazes me how people think of yamaha as low grade.
I have tried the LL6 &LL16 ,both excellent.The LL6 for the dollar is a real good buy.I play a Larrivee L28 cutaway,which i had K&K PU installed. i bought new in 78/79,love it
i have 5 Yamaha's and also swear by them ... i'd love to own any one of the trinity guitars or even close to that quality.. mine were all under a thousand .. but sound and play like a million bucks
Whats the difference with the L56 is that series even better and are they all loud enough to play without a plecktrum? What is the exact nut width on these?
I’ve watch all 3 in this series. I have a D-18 and D-28 but you have me sold on these Yamahas. Of course you could make a board and a piece of wire sound great.
Hi John! Is the neck shape on the LL16 the same as the LL36? I just bought a LL16D and it really blew me away. What an awsome instrument. This must be the best buy for that price. The only thing I've done is that swapped the saddle and nut to bone and swapped the piezo pickup to the L. R. Baggs Lyric. The sound changed and it sound more like a LL26. I think the sound of my Yamaha LL16D sound better than a Martin D28.
I have a FG9M and was considering adding either this or an FG9R. I went with an LL36 despite preferring the minimalist FG look and damn I’m glad I did. Let me say this, it is not gaudy in person (my only concern). More importantly, the LL36 is a completely different playing guitar to the FG9 with an incredible tonality unique to it. The FG9 is louder, has more clarity and more dynamic range (applies to both models not just the M I have). The LL36 is sweeter, more immediately responsive and in my opinion has an even more comfortable neck and better string spacing (slightly narrower string spacing than the FG9, both have a 1 3/4 nut width though). There is no way I’ll part with either one and I don’t think I could say which is “better”. They are both top tier incredible instruments.
How do you compare the Yamaha LL36 vs the Yairi DYM60HD? They’re about the same price and are both difficult to find so I’d have to buy them on-line sight unseen. You raved about both in your reviews and you’re the only person I can find that’s played both of them. I’d be grateful for your thoughts comparing them.
Hi J.P. Love your trinity reviews. I have a question in regards to this L36? Is it not a LS36 or is that another model? Asking cause I have a chance to get a LS36 and am trying to learn as much as possible before taking the car for a full day drive :-) Greetings from Denmark
Hi there, could you please let me know if you find out the difference between an LL 36 and a LS 36 . I see this guy has not replied to your question. Thank you for a reply if you can. Best wishes from Northern Ireland. 🌠🌅👍🏻
That statement of putting it up against any acoustic guitar ever made was exactly what I was thinking about when you said it, it is possibly the richest sounding guitar I've heard.
Thanks for a very interesting review of this amazing guitar! Very useful. It made me look for one and I bought it unseen from Japan - I live in Austria - and you are completely right. It plays almost itself and sounds incredible, even compared to my Collings CJ IRW and even more to my Collings D42A!!!! Also have a Solid Sigma SOMR45VS, which is a beautiful little guitar and a Martin D35 1970 and 1968 D35S Custom. This one beats all of them in playing and in sound, vibrations and construction and finish! I,m almost broke now, but hardly regret it :-) What I am still wondering about is: is the extra money worth it, it would cost getting a LL56 compared a fantastic LL36??? Thanks a lot Mr. JP!
Parabéns excelente vídeo, violões da Yamaha são realmente diferenciados , ao som de Pearl Jam 🖤🤘 Neil Young e outros sensação fantástica, viva a música a vida!
JP, thanks for this great review. You also play terrific and that's what we need for a good guitar review. I have an old L25 from 1978/1980 but I think your L36 sounds wider and warmer. About the strings: you mentioned that they would be better with Elixir strings. I can not agree with that. Elixir strings sounds too sterile and soulless to my opinion, I tried them on many guitars. I would recommend Martin Treated which have no plastic coating, they sounds more organic and they last longer than regular Martin strings. You should give that a try, really. Let me know what you think of it. Another thing I would like to know if this Yamaha can beat the Eastman guitars. Keep on playing! I subscribed :)
LL36 - excellent guitar - I own an LJ16, 2 LJ6, LL16M, and 2 LL6 Yamaha guitars - I've played an LL36 and LJ26 extensively - they are all flawless and sound different but believe it or not the most expensive ones don't sound 'better' than the 6 series - they just sound different - my favorite of the bunch is consistently the the LL6 guitars for the Carter style flat picking I do - I've heard others say the same, which is great for the average guy.
I have an FGX-830C. Obviously not a comparison but when I beat on it, it sounds better by the day, and gentle playing here and there, she does not sound the same.
Could you do the FSX5 mahogany/spruce parlor style model. Trying to decide if I should buy it with or without their pickup system because you seem to have more faith in installing K&K pickups in your acoustic guitars. Could you help me decide which way to go sir? I respect your opinion especially on this little gem of a builder. Yammy's are a force to reckin with in my opinion.
I can't believe it but it sounds & resonants better than my HD-28, or my other Taylor's. I think I'll need to look into Yamahas now. I have Takamines also and they are superb guitars as well as Larrivess. I'm looking at the LS36 concert body. I'm hoping you can do a review of that guitar soon.
I bought a Hiroshi Sakurai LS36 10 years ago, mainly because I thought it was cheap, it was an ex-demo guitar from Yamaha's main supplier in London and cost me £1,100. Like most old geezers I had several guitars already (some far more expensive) but found I only ever picked up the LS36 so I have given or put the rest away. Some people think the neck is a little slim, obviously I don't. Another caution, the finish marks easily but since I have no intention of selling it I don't mind that too much either.
JP would you agee that the difference between the 26 and the 36 is basically the bling? Sound would pretty much be a match? Naturally the L56 would be from a different dimension.
Does that five piece neck actually perform some function in retarding bowing, twisting or other displacement of the neck? I mean, I can see that would have been its purpose, but does it work?
Hey there. Curious about your L-15. Is it from the 80's and stamped on the inside" made in Taiwan"? Just asking, I think the L-15 (Spruce and Rosewood, all solid) was produced early to mid 80's. I have an 1981 L-10A (Tiawan, spruce and rosewood), and an 1983 LL10 (Japan, Spruce and mahogany). Not a lot of info on them, but they are great. I did contact Yamaha Canada and they were able to provide me info. Very cool. Perhaps an email to Yamaha may get you some info if your still looking. Hope you still have the Yammie and are enjoying it. Take care.
I have a first generation L-15. Here is the specs etc. 1975 Yamaha L-15 Hand-signed (and built) by renowned Yamaha luthier Terumi "Terry" Nakamoto, This is first Generation guitar that Yamaha made, same time as the L53 of John Denver. This has to be one of the finest Japanese designed guitars ever made. The online reviewers go nuts about them. I agree it has a special something all it's own. This is NOT the L-15A which is made in Taiwan, it’s the real deal made in Japan! Not like Martin or Taylor, this guitar has a special sound that makes me feel relaxed every time I play it. It has such a well broken in sound and feel that it has to be played to be appreciated. It has a sweet timbre and is inspiring to play. The bass response is exceptional and it responds to the lightest touch. Because there were 2 cracks in the back ( 20 years ago) , and at the time were repaired by a luthier, since then, it has been kept in a well humidifed environment. No further cracking. (See Pics) In addition, Morris CP-3 passive pickup is attached. This guitar has aged beautifully, and has a one of a kind personality. There are some scratches and scars, Neck is straight, Bridge and saddle are perfect. (See Pics) Top: Rare Ezo spruce! Sides: Solid Mahogany Back: Three piece solid mahogany / rosewood / mahogany Action: 1F:2.25mm, 6F 2.75mm Truss Rod: smooth in both directions Tuners: Gold plating You can see details here: yamahaguitars.nl/facts-figures/the-l-series/ @@stevebernard221
I remember in college, one of my friends (who got me started on playing) was an international student from spain, and his mother's side came from luthiers of classical guitars, and he told a story of he was at the meeting with his uncle and the best luthiers in Spain, only his uncle admitted that the best Yamaha classicals and flamenco guitars were louder than the Spanish made ones, and kept the tone, and they should learn from them. The other luthiers said Yamaha team was being tainted as they made "American Cowboy guitars." and they would be the laughingstock of the flamenco and classical world. The snobbery still goes on, but the classical /flamenco players that know good guitars will say hand made Yamaha is one of the best. Plus if you name all the top classical guitar luthiers to the average person off the street, they'll won't know who they are until you say Yamaha.
Wow! That’s about what my new mattress will cost! Otherwise I’d be at the music store getting one of these babies. Something else to save for. I am going to replace the guitar I do have with Elexir strings, tho, tout suite!
Thanks for the video! Enjoying they indepth reviews. Fortunite to have a couple yamaha's. Yamaha should do better at advertising and promotion of there guitars but wow such a good value now part of me hopes to buy another before they do that.

Whats the difference with the L56 is that series even better and are they all loud enough to play without a plecktrum?
I’ll take this over a d 28 or HD 28 any day of the week!
I wish for the top of the line LL series, headquarters would permit a custom perhaps cursive, headstock name. Semper Fi
JP would you agee that the difference between the 26 and the 36 is basically the bling? Sound would pretty much be a match? Naturally the L56 would be from a different dimension.
Oh my would you listen to that. I know these high end L series guitars are legendary with finger style guitar players.
Does that five piece neck actually perform some function in retarding bowing, twisting or other displacement of the neck? I mean, I can see that would have been its purpose, but does it work?
What do you think of D,addario X strings
Big fan here. Martin J40 is the one to compare it too. I have both.
I want to buy the LS36 ARE. I used to own the LS16 made in China
What’s the tune you were fingerpicking in A? That’s driving me crazy trying to come up with it. Guitar sounds fantastic
I love your passion for Yamaha guitars! I have owned an L-15 for around 25 years! I can't find much info on the web. Thoughts?
1975 Yamaha L-15
Hand-signed (and built) by renowned Yamaha luthier Terumi "Terry" Nakamoto,
This is first Generation guitar that Yamaha made, same time as the L53 of John Denver.
(See Pics)
In addition, Morris CP-3 passive pickup is attached.
This guitar has aged beautifully, and has a one of a kind personality.
There are some scratches and scars, Neck is straight, Bridge and saddle are perfect. (See Pics)

Sides: Solid Mahogany
Back: Three piece solid mahogany / rosewood / mahogany

Is it named L36, or LL36?
Sorry if you've answered this question before but, what is that beautiful microphone you're using?
Hey there. How does the fgx5 compare to these guitars?
Great review Sweetwater has them in stock. How would you advise getting a pickup or amplification for this guitar?
Nice guitar indeed! Never owned a Yahama - yet!
It’s interesting also that Yamaha hasn’t gone to the Adirondack craze on these models
I own LL16D ARE and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
How much???
Have you played a ll-25t ? If so what are your thoughts
I haven’t been able to find one online to see which guitar you’re referring to. I don’t know the model.
What’s the difference between the LL26 and LL36 other than the extra abolone?
@@rogerd9514 they’re pretty different styles. Woods and quality are the same. The 26 doesn’t have maple bound neck or headstock.
@@JPCormier thanks.
@@JPCormier thanks.
more bluegrassy/dan crary-esque sounding guitar similar to his mossman used on his lady’s fancy album
Such a great channel! I enjoy every one of your videos. One quick question: what would you choose, SIGHT UNSEEN: a new Yamaha LL16D or a 1968 Harmony H1260 (in great form, neck reseted, etc)? (I'm poor and these are my two favourite options). Cheers!
Yamaha LL16D. Too many unknown issues in an old guitar to buy sight unseen.
@@JPCormier That's what I thought. I've asked around to see if anybody with some knowledge would say: "Grab the Harmony no matter what!!". Hasn't been the case. Thank you very much for the response. You've helped me a lot. Cheers!
Eastman and Yamaha… quality for a good price
