Favourite track on True Confessions. I love all the versions of this song, particularly this one. The album one is a pure classic, the Number one mix cool and the Live tour SOS Band version is awesome too.
This song came out in late 1986 and that's when I was in 12th grade. I can recall times when I would leave home to go to school and the leave school to go home., that I would end up with this song playing through my mind continuous nonstop.
I recently heard on a podcast called 'Unflopped' that there was two video's made for it and that Bananarama hated it. I just watched this and I thought right away it had to be this one.
The original album mix of this underrated Bananarama tune soars WAY above this typical sounding SAW production. When hearing the first seconds of this version years ago, I thought I was listening to a remix of something from 'Princess?'
This video was directed by Chris Serle of the BBC's "In at the deep end" where two BBC presenters were asked to do something that they had never done (in this case direct a music video)
Who's here because you are reading their memoir and especially that page where Keren talks about this 'rather peculiar' video shoot experience? (Not gonna say more. Just read 🐣😳) I love both versions of Trick of The Night, though 💞💞👍👍💿💿🎼
...WELL, I, as an American, never saw this Video version, 'cause the original album version was chosen as the 3rd single in the US...and flopped MISERABLY! : ( ...But, to review this video; I can see why the 'Nanas hated it; Keren looks VERY unsure of herself in her close-ups, to the point her hair seems to be covering up her expressions! Sarah has a disinterested stride; she probably didn't like the cold! ...she looks fab, though, great lighting on her skin.... Sibohan fares the best here; she seems to getting into the '40's french euro noir film vibe, & carries herself with an early 'Shakespeare's Sister' confidence (2:24).....but the sunny, 'Say I'm Your Number One' groove-disco sound doesn't gel with the gloomy, cold (notwithstanding, the deleted/ toned down 'male prostitute' lyrics) in the video...OH, well....¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
What a beautiful song. This video was made by a first time director BTW, can't remember his name but he was a tv presenter and he made the video as a challenge, i think he did really well 👍
I just watched an online documentary of Bananarama where they talked about this video and agree that this was terrible. I'm so glad this wasn't released in America.
*Love the album version more...* 🌃🌉🎷 The song has a sordid dark downtown atmosphere that the remix removes (along with the saxophone). Bananarama look lovely in a black and white video though this is copying a bit of "Robert De Niro" and a crane thrown in. Siobhan looks super hot though!
The album version eerie arrangement lends itself to the obtuse lyrics. Enjoy the original version much more. Definitely right up there with their best.
@@darmok072 It was actually the BBC show 'In at the deep end' presented by Paul Heiney. I much prefer this to the other version made - it must be remembered that they requested it to be made in black and white. Bananarama and London records were deliberately very obtuse in their reaction to this Video . It still puzzles me to this day as to why they participated in the programme in the first place if they were going to be so miserable at the result. In at the deep end was a very popular show - the reaction that was given by them didn't really portray them in a particularly good light in the UK.
@@byronmills5952 Thank you! Glad your memory is better than mine. It was a great episode. Didn't his "test" video feature a man in a bear suit dancing to the Beatles? :-)
@@darmok072 Your memory isn't that bad if you can remember that! His test video did indeed feature a man dressed up in a bear suit serving a young boy jelly on a silver service platter - the young boy then precedes to catapult the jelly back at the bear - all quite surreal! All done to the tones of the Beatles from me to you - the rights of its usage must have been much cheaper back in 1986! Its mild eccentricity in concept must have been chanelled towards impressing Heineys mentor Ken Russell. ☺️
Was this first version because the Official Video version is far better imo, more advanced everything and a better version overall. Of course I love everything they do.
+Applemask I see what you mean. I looked at 2 videos where Sarah was pregnant. Long Train Running and Trippin On Your Love. Better techniques involved.
Gregg Sarkasian-McAuliffe Keren was pregnant. The 12" version starts with a recording of her baby's heartbeat recorded before he was born. Siobhan was heavily pregnant in the I Can't Help It video - that's why her tits look enormous and she doesn't appear in the part where they are frolicking in milk with the guys.
That’s not the UK-Version, that’s the US-Version, as well the video as the Mix; that’s the remix from Stock/Aitken/Watermann. The original version (UK-Version) is from Swain & Jolley and it’s much better, more romantically and mystically, even New Wave. The remixing from S/A/W doesn’t fit to this song and sounds artificial, from my opinion...

That's because the basis of the music track is indeed "Say I'm Your Number 1" by princess, at varying tempos.
Siobhan looks lovely in this vid
She always looks amazing
I love with all my soul this version Bananarama forever in my heart

I wish they didnt have throw out banana peels in Cruel summer video.Otherwise I think its their most charming song and best video.
Nearly correct. It was actually Paul Heiney which directed this video. I still have the full show in my collection.

Jolley & Swain: “You can't ruin a perfect song.“ SAW: “Hold my beer!“
Thank you.
Bannanarama clearly re-recorded the vocals for this version, so they disagree with you.
Horse shit. This is a million times better and was a precursor to the mash up craze.
I love this mysterious sounding version and soundtrack, but I feel like I get more used to the original album version.
Who's here because you are reading their memoir and especially that page where Keren talks about this 'rather peculiar' video shoot experience? (Not gonna say more. Just read 🐣😳)

It was part of a bbc show
I love Bananarama, they are great singers. I just wish I was in my youth in this decade
That alley way is in Mitcham!! Off Western Road!!
I still love Bananarama
Love this version😍😍
Love this girls, all of them are pretty beautiful, but Sara... The example of a bombshell!!!
That song has a certain seedy allure
The album version is way better!
The lyrics to the song are about a friend of theirs who was working as a "rent boy" (young male sex worker) on the streets of London.

Princess "Say I'm your number 1" Sample ! ❤
there is a no1 mix which is the actual princess track

Princess N° 1, was too sampled..
Delicious love it.
I've always loved this version of the song
I feel that the vocals are better on this one but i like the US version instrumental.

Love this!!
I love Bananarama and MrPoopface
How old is this ?? Never heard of it and heard of all bananarama songs !!!??
A great SAW production from 1986, which was then mixed by Phil Harding of PWL studios at the time in February 1987.
mickfizz1 It was actually produced originally by Swain and Jolley who co wrote it. It was later remixed by the SAW camp for the single release
yes .. this is indeed true ! My wording was not very accurate about this! i had meant to say a great production by SAW when they mixed it later on .
And finally this mix was recently included on The Bananarama In A Bunch Singles Box Set YES!
After 30 years this video mix was finally made available!!
I just watched an online documentary of Bananarama where they talked about this video and agree that this was terrible. I'm so glad this wasn't released in America.
Sweet!
great group
This PWL remix is far superior to the original Swain Jolley imo....just lends itself so well to the song
siobhan , Keren , Sarha ❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶🎶

Their best song
I heard a rumour or Cruel summer. Those two are more succeful songs.I am not sure which one better.
Bananarama is most likely known for Cruel summer, Venus and I Heard a rumour but they have so much other good underrated songs
Robert De nIRO'S waiting vibes in this video
there was a competition on an early reality tv show to make the video. I think that this was the one and they hated it!

This Music Video version of the PWL remix is different from the PWL remix on the Maxi Single 👀 this one's better!
I remember the story behind this it was a bbc presenter trying to put the video together and at the end they went with anew video
Can't believe what shit PWL turned this brilliant track into!?!
So true! I only knew the US version. Why was it murdered like this?!

They fucked with More Than Physical and then they fucked with this. Shame. The band had such high hopes for this one.
Stock Aitken waterman feel to this version
That's because it's, you know, the PWL remix.
❤❤❤❤❤
The shadowing makes me wonder if Keren was pregnant
It's more likely to be a symptom of this video having been made by an amateur for what we'd nowadays call a reality show.

different edit & video
A dreadful version, actually a kind of dance remix, of a brilliant mellow pop song in its original version.
⬛
This version is inferior to the more colorful video version
Dance mix doesnt work for this song
+Lon Brooklyn I wish I could tell who's vocals they brought forward in this version of the song. It sounds like either Siobhan or Sarah.
Gregg Sarkasian-McAuliffe Keren I thinķ. Sarah sung in a lower register and Siobhan had quite a shrill tone to her voice.

Im so tired of PWL remixing songs, and chewing them to little bits.
This is horrible, the original is much better
No wonder this song flopped
This version is horrific
The original was so great, but this is all... SAWed up
Disgusting
A song flopped BECAUSE of SAW in 1987? 😅 You are quite funny, man..
Garbage compared to the original version.
