    • Martial arts means arts associated with the waging of war’.
    • A number of martial arts in the country are closely related to dance, yoga and performing arts.
    Types of Martial arts:
    Kalaripayattu:
    • Kerala
    • Specific type of school/gymnasium/training hall where martial arts are practiced and taught.
    • Saga Parasurama, built temples and introduced martial arts, started Kalaripayattu.
    • Fighting, Footwork
    • Ashoka and Myth
    • Includes number of techniques and aspects.
    • Some of these are: Uzhichil, Maipayattu, Verumkai or bare-handed fight
    Silambam:
    • A kind of staff fencing
    • Modern and scientific martial arts of Tamil Nadu.
    • Long-staff used for both mock fighting and self defence.
    • Different kinds of staves used.
    • Different kind of techniques used.
    • Three ways to win a Silambam contest.
    Thang-ta-and Sarit Sarak:
    • Created by Meitei people of Manipur.
    • Thang-ta: Armed martial art
    • Sarit Sarak: Unarmed arts
    • Thang - ‘Sword’; Ta-‘spear’
    • Also known as Huyen Lallong, practiced in three different ways:
    o Ritualistic in nature, mesmerizing performance, actual techniques of fighting.
