    Excellent, thanks. The focus of the dogs is great to watch,as is the quality of their retrieves. Good explanation of how the birds are distributed.

    what a lovely video to showcase a shooting day, and for me the sight of your dogs sitting marking the birds just wonderful thank you, the hardest bit was when at the back of the pond and the ducks landing everywhere they can be forgiven for getting distracted

    • @Wintercoombe
      @Wintercoombe  14 дней назад +1

      Yes it was somewhat tricky. Usually there is a second person by the pond but unfortunately someone was ill that day which meant it was quite a full on drive. Unfortunately I couldn’t film it all because I was dashing in and out of shot 🙈

    Loving the longer videos, thank you 👍 . Glad to see you stood well back from the guns, nothing more off-putting than someone just a few feet behind you .👍👍

      @Wintercoombe  14 дней назад +1

      We are only ever close to the guns if there is no option (I.e. fencing means we have to have a picker up front and one further back). 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    Celine, you talk to your dogs like i do mine in the garden and meadow. My townie neighbours think i'm a bit mad, but i get more sense from my dogs than i ever do their kids!

    Honestly thank you so much for this. Just starting to get involved. Been beating twice without dog and one shootover training day (rough shooting) with my GSP (first gundog) so this no nonsense video with clear explanations is invaluable. Really appreciate it! love your labs of every colour- amazing!!!!!!!!! hard enough to keep my eye on one dog. Looks like a fab day!

    Enjoyed watching the video well put together, it was a good point on what happens to the game once it’s shot and how it’s distributed you got that across well.unusual hunt command mind 😂

    That was so well done ! Raven getting lost was very funny commentary. Youngest dog learning to be steady was nice to watch. Little shit lol Every time you say Raven , River bobs on the R sound but stays steady impressive. One scene with a duck Raven shakes water on River who moves away didn’t want to get wetter lol . Opening drive when every dog has a bird was classic. My 6 year year old black lab seems to gather some cock birds so that wings completely cover his eyes , a true blind retrieve. He still comes directly to me on voice or whistle and runs right past me if I stay silent , I think that shows his trust in me. Thanks again for a great video and further explanation of how things are done . 😊

      @Wintercoombe  14 дней назад

      Haha yes mine do sometimes do the true ‘blind’ retrieve with a wing too… it’s very sweet seeing them try to navigate back to me.
      I too love how River and Raven sometimes think it’s them when it’s the other one; you can feel the disappointment in the air from the one not going 🙈
      Glad you enjoyed the video 🫶🏻

    As long as the birds are getting picked up , I don’t mind pickers standing near me, often have a chat with them . Well done 👏👏

    • @Wintercoombe
      @Wintercoombe  14 дней назад +1

      We only stand near guns if the fencing and topography means we need to. Most pickers are further back but we may have one on the end of the line or in the front field, as much as anything to also help mark for those further back.

    Brilliant, how long does it take to train a gun dog? Are the dog teams all ladies. Looking forward to the next vids.

    • @Wintercoombe
      @Wintercoombe  2 дня назад

      Most dogs are ready to experience the shooting field at around 18 months. I would say most are a firm member of the team by 2.5 - 3 years old. No we have a mixture of men and women … it was very male dominated years ago but a lot of women now pick up on shoots.

    It’s ethical to retrieve all shot birds, plus not retrieved means revenue to the shoot is left for foxes or goes rotten

    so, cant dispatch birds on water with gun? being a duck hunter in Australia it can be hard work on dog to swim down a wounded duck

    • @Wintercoombe
      @Wintercoombe  14 дней назад +1

      Some places do (although I’ve only ever seen it done once and that was on a large quarry) however most places will use dogs to retrieve them during the drive.
