Hay, cereal, vegetables, cotton, it does not matter. Farmers will always grow crops that have a high return on investment, doing anything else would be poor management. The water should not be free of charge though. That water belongs to all Australians. The resource should be priced accordingly.

same things happening all over australia in qld brisbane theres a local river i have seen only ever receding over the last 15 years due to farmers constantly pumping water out of it into water storage ponds that dont maintain the quality let alone actually get used for the farm.

I cant get my head around the politics of it all. My thoughts are with the indigenous community solely. I spend my spare time when i can in the NSW outback and appreciate the land. One can feel what the indigenous feel just by looking and listening to the land and its wildlife. I hope there is a follow up to this story. A good one
To individuals yes, to corporations and businesses no. They are selling and profiting from the product they grow. And at the scale they collect water it has a massive environmental impact. You probably missed many of these points from the documentary. Perhaps you are lost in your our materialistic world.
Our own foood bowl should be priority. Cotton doesn't feed people. Only those getting rich from the crops.
Leave the water for the vast wildlife too.
