Idoing Head Unit Install & Review for Subaru WRX STI - New Slim Black model - Is Carplay worth it?

- Опубликовано: 23 июл 2024
- I install the new iDoing Head Unit (slim & black back model) into a 2017 Subaru WRX STI to see if the upgrade's worth it for Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto). My WRX STI has the Harmon Kardon system and happy to say the system works great and is a worthwhile upgrade, even if its not perfect.

I didn't realise there were newer iDoing models than what's most commonly seen on RUclips, it was a surprise to see something different when I unboxed it! My advice is do your research before you buy, I've included a model comparison at the end of this video to hopefully help here. The install process should be likely similar for Subaru Forester, XV, Levorg, Crosstrek Impreza, & Outback models too.

I hope you found this iDoing install and review video for my Subaru WRX STI helpful!. So as you may have noticed, I had no idea there were totally different iDoing models you could order for your Subaru, it seems on RUclips most of the videos are for the older-silver-back-1-DIN iDoing model so I just assumed that's what I would get too! Whoops! So by pure chance I chose this model which appears to be a new and better model (when you compare specs). So for those that pick this model I hope this video helps as there aren't too many on RUclips!
The install is reasonably easy If you give yourself a few hours to an afternoon for it. The most difficult part I found was on reassembly, right at the end where you need to clip the head unit & facia back into the dash. Clipping this in for the first time is very difficult. The Facia kit needs to be bent a little to shape and the clips require more force than you think to go in. I had great success in placing a book over the screen and apply force broadly across the head unit. After doing it once, I have not had any trouble clipping it back in since. Once you know how its all good!
If you want to retain your WRX's USB ports of your car you'll need to buy an extra USB cable not from iDoing, the adapter I bought has the part number: "APSUUSB1" and its easy to install. I've left a search-link above in the product list, but you may need to google around to find it which is easy enough.
For cars with Harmon Kardon system, it also seems there is one issue that the CANBUS adapter doesn't fix, and this is you appear to lose fade/balance for the rear spears when using Mixer app. Audio plays fine through these speakers normally, but IF you change the balance to 100% rear, there will be no sound at all. You'll have to google well to find the discussions on this issue, but its there, the consensus is just to live with at this stage. I don't know many including me who use fade/balance regularly, so its not a big loss.

Hey all, hope you found this video helpful! Make sure to check out the model comparison at the end of the video so you buy the right version for you and don't have a surprises like I did haha! 😃I've left links to these three in the video description as well as some extra information I didn't cover in the video. If you have any questions drop them below and I'll try to answer them, cheers!
Thanks, this was quite timely - I was just trying to work out the difference between those units. Glad to see there are no weird incompatibility issues with the Aussie models.
Thanks for leaving a comment, glad to hear it helped. Good luck with choosing the model that’s right for you! Cheers!
This is a great video. Perfect for what I have been looking for and answers a lot of the question that are difficult to work out on your own.
Lucky I came across this video as I was linked by iDoing to another model with 720p when I asked for the latest and highest spec model. This one seems to be the newer model with 2K screen.
This is how I got this model, I asked to be linked to be the best one for me. The one I installed here is a 720p but the besides the screen res the specs appear the same as the 2k version. Honestly the 720p screen is very sharp, not sure if 2k is necessary.
I’m thinking I might as well purchase the high spec whilst I’m doing it. The cost difference isn’t extreme.
Out of curiosity did it come with the different configuration piece for hazard light and top screen control? In between the vents. On the idoing photos it has the two examples. One with 1 hole and the other with 2 (hazard and top screen control)
@@nekomamashii yeah if you check my unboxing bit in the video i got the extra piece, i never needed to use it. Not totally sure why its in the box haha.
Just bought this unit, excited to install this.
Another question, regarding the APSUUSB1. This allowed you to retain functionality in both USB ports in the middle console area? Did you also have a seperate cable on the side for CarPlay?
I went with 2K model, also thought the same that if I am upgrading go for the best...especially if the price difference is not big. It looks awesome. Only problem I am facing is with the door speakers with my harmon kardon system (see my earlier comment).
Other than the screen resolution, other difference is the missing dedicated buttons on the left of the screen. Actually Idoing support person double checked with me when i was buying...as per him people want dedicated button. I still went with 2k screen model. So far no regrets...there is soft floating button in this model which brings soft navigation keys. It is a two step process, but i think it is still ok. Also, we have back button on the steering wheel which works fine. And i configured top left button on the steering wheel as Home buttom. So with those, it is covered.
Great video. This makes me wanna sell my old silver model and try the new one, since I sometimes run into power/connection issues.
If you did it would be interesting to know what you think compared to the silver model! And thanks for leaving a comment! Cheers
Thanks Ben for the nice video. I have just put an Idoing in my Subaru Outback 2016 (gen5) and have the same problem as you say with the mic. First is was awefull apparently, then I disconnected the mic plug and i got a lot better, but apparently i still sound far away. Another thing I noticed is that my balance between front and rear speaker doesn´t work as it should. But still very happy with the Idoing head unit with Harman Kardon.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah the mic is unfortunate, one day when I’m motivated I’ll connect a good Rhode lav microphone to see if it’s any better. But yeah, also yeah I noticed the fade/balance with Harmon kardon too. I left info on that in the written description.
Thanks for this I almost bought one of the older models. I went to the Idoing website and there are like 4 or 5 headunits for the WRX STI that all look the same and all of the pictures are the same as well for some reason.
Glad to hear you found it helpful! Thanks for leaving a comment.
I have just installed the new type Idoing in a non Harmon Kardon Outback. My main complaint is very poor phone call quality, This was already not great in the outback with original system but it unusable now. The other caller cannot hear me until i turn Mic gain way up and then they hear an echo and lots of noise. Ive tried all the mic option but no success
Ben, Great video, most of the others are the older version that has what looks like a single din radio attached. I have a 2019 STi, and just got the recall repair done for the parasitic battery drain issue, they removed the DCM and did a bypass box to resolve that, seems to have resolved it as I haven't had issues since. Not sure if you have the same issue with your car. Anyways, you mentioned that this unit is supposed to work off the factory microphone, did that actually pan out? My car has the Harman Kardon system too. I've never been very impressed, can you comment on the sound after having the unit installed for a while now and time to dial it in. Are there any other things that have changed or evolved since your install, may I suggest a follow up video. I'm also thinking of adding the front camera, thoughts?
Hey mate, thanks! Nothing has really changed since the video really, I did add a few things I forgot in the video description. Overall still very happy with it, it’s the best bang for buck option I’d say. The microphone situation is the systems weak point though, they do provide a few options but regardless people say you’re hard to hear like you’re far away, which is ‘an Idoing thing’ it seems. When I’m motivated I’ll try swapping out the microphone for a good quality lavalier mic which I’ve recorded parts of this video with and see how that goes. I’d defs still recommend it for sure but there are spots for improvement. Cheers!
Great video mate! Have you seen or messed with the 2K model in person? Im intrigued... 2020 sti non-harmon kardon here, looking to upgrade.
Nah I haven’t, only learned about it when I realised I accidentally bought this newer 720p model haha! From what I can see it’s pretty much the same besides less buttons (on side of unit) and the screen resolution.
I got the 2k one, very much the same, very nice screen, although you don't get the buttons/icons
About the rearrangement, not sure if someone said it already, but you long-press an app and a menu pops up with your other apps to replace it with 👍
heyy thanks! I thought was just a quick app short cut menu, not to move apps around haha! That said this ONLY works for me on the home screen, in terms of the 3 pages of apps I cannot find any way to re-order them. Have you?
@@BenCad ah, no clue about that one - if I find something I'll let you know!
I just installed and I’m getting no sound out of the front door speakers. Any help?
Something I dont see with any of these Android radios is what type of wattage do they put down. The main reason I have been undecided between the Idoing, Seicaine and the Dasaita unit or a regular double din unit.
I have a 2021 Subaru WRX STI and just installed this head unit and the only issue in having is the factory gps maps arent completely loading up so i cant swe roads on it, just a blank map. No response from idioing yet, the sound is insanely better with the harmon kardon system. Very happy overall
Hmm - Did you install the gps antenna that came with the Idoing?
@@BenCad yes and it's dash mounted
wow i need that hdmi port! i have the older model
I have a few questions.
Do you know where to buy the wiring for this unit separately?
Does the main power plug-in have the wiring for the sub woofer and backup cam?
Cheers.
I would say if you contacted Idoing, which you can via Aliexpress, they might be able to help with just the loom.
And yeah with the wiring they’ve provided I’ve got the factory sub and camera working.
I just installed mine. Have you ran into any like split second cut outs of the audio? It almost sounds like it’s skipping. Idk how to fix it and have checked the wiring and everything looks good. Curious if I’m missing something.
Hey, yes but - only as noted in the video I seem to have some audio dropout issues when using wireless apple car play and driving through freeway tollgates. They only last for a split second however.
hey, what's the difference betwen the non-harmon and harmon Idoing units. Are they the same wattage and connectors? (I have a 2018 base sti, stock non-harmon head unit, with aftermarket speakers, I want to have the most juice without adding a amplificator) Thanks!
I could be wrong here, but I believe it’s more about the wiring harness that you receive. You’ll note here in just a few video I have to connect a canbus adapter which has a spot on the wiring loom for it. The functionality of the head unit should function the same.
Do they use an APU on board or a CPU GPU combo? Im pretty sure like most video game consoles they use an APU application.
hey Charles, the specs list both GPU and CPU seperately/combo.
Do you know if this version or 2K version would work on a 2016 Subaru crosstrek? It looks very similar
The fit would be very similar.. im pretty sure they have a Crosstrek / XV model. You can send them a message on AliExpress and they can advise you to confirm.
How's the mic quality? Also is there a feature within the headunit to change the Mic gain settings?
There's a bit towards the end of the video where i talk about mic quality - in summary it could be better. Yes you can adjust gain settings, change mic sources etc. Hope that helps. Cheers
in the Australia model, does the USB still work in the Centre Console?
In my Aussie STI don’t have the usb ports in centre console, they’re in that area under the head unit. But with then extra USB cable adapter you can retain them .
What’s the HDMI port in the back for? Hookup for an alternate video source?
It’s an audio-output for if you had a fancy amplifier etc. I’ll admit I got a little excited and thought it would be funny so I originally plugged my super-Nintendo-mini console thingy into it when I first saw it haha, sadly no luck lol.
Great video, Did the usb adapters come with the unit? And can I ask what is the part code for the extra wire you needed with the usb? and where did that exactly fit? cheers
Hey Steve, thanks for the comment! You get the USB cables with the unit, but the adapter that makes the hub work is completely seperate, Idoing don’t sell it either. I ordered mine from eBay, the model/part for the usb adapter is number is: APSUUSB1 if you google it you’ll find it in heaps of places! Hope that helps! Cheers
@@BenCad awesome, thanks for the reply (ignore my email) :) Does the APSUUSB1 plug directly into the back of our dual port USB or is it onthe the PCB of the Dual port (is this why you removed it from the plastics?)
Oh and id the 3.5in audio jack now deleted as a result?
@@SMADSteve the cable sits inbetween the usb cables (from the iDoing) to the USB dock (that you're trying to retain the use of).
@@SMADSteve there is definitely not one on the iDoing unit, but there is on the factory USB ports (5:18), i havent checked if that works or not though haha, i havent used a 3.5mm jack since my ipod days! I'll keep it in mind to check.
I have a base 2018 wrx. Was looking to get one of these. I don’t have the upgraded speakers but plan to get aftermarket ones put in shortly after I would install this unit, or possibly at the same time. Is the unit you showcased in this video the correct one for me to purchase?
Thanks!
Hey mate, Pretty much Yes.. but - if you don't have the Harmon Kardon system there is an alternative option to pick which you simply select on the link above. If you're looking on AliExpress (links in my video description) you'll see there are 3 different variants you can purchase, variant 2200, 2203, 2203A, when you click the option the image will tell you a bit more information about the variant. Essentially the options are there for which sound system you have in your WRX. If you're still uncertain you can always message iDoing on the page and ask them for extra certainty. Cheers, hope that helps 😀
@@BenCad
Okay awesome. From your knowledge do you foresee me possibly running into any issues in the future installing different speakers?
I don’t think so, i believe the setup should be simpler without Harmon kardon overall, especially if you’re just using the OEM wiring that’s there. The unit also comes with RCA wiring for if you were wiring to an amplifier, which you can see the wiring in the unboxing portion of the video. Once again, if you need more certainty you could check with Idoing directly too. Cheers
@@BenCad
Alright. Thanks again! I appreciate the help!
@@prestonmorrisette7783 Good luck with your decision!
Bought the 2k one. It's a really nice display. Nice and responsive - it took longer than it should have to install mostly to my fault losing parts where they shouldn'tbe lost.
I can map all steerimg wheel controls except for volume up OR down. I can map one but not the other.... might need to check all the plugs and make sure they are plugged in properly. I also want to retain factory usb up the front (AUDM) So i need to get that adaptor
Glad to hear it’s gone well, I’m unsure on the steering wheel volume settings, can confirm they work fine on mine here, only took 30 seconds to have the controls setup. Perhaps try messaging Idoing before you put yourself through the pain of pulling it back out!
@BenCad I managed to do it all in one night (last night when i made my initial comment), and I was so exhausted after, though. I have it somewhat un clipped at the top so I can easily pull it out. I have messaged idoing so I will wait for them. On the topic of the mic, they said you can retain factory mic, but you have to tap into a 5v source to power it. I'm still waiting on idoing to confirm how exactly.
I ran the aftermarket mic from the head unit, and the person I tested said it's not the best, but they seem to be able to hear me.
On another note, everything works well, and much like everyone else, it far exceeded my expectations, I do, however, hear a slight static from the car sound system (with Harmon kardon), sounds as if the gain is turned all the way up. Might play around with the audio settings.
@@zyawillis8040 did you ever resolve your volume up and down issue? I just installed the 720p with the same UI as Ben's but am having the same volume issue you are having.
My reverse cam is also not as good of quality as the OEM HU. :(
@ScootsMcBoots Hey mate, yes, I did manage to resolve the issue. Thanks to Idoing's suggestions.
When in "common" -> "steering wheel keys learn" -> "settings" you will see three settings you can change, "key tolerance" changed it to (50.0mv), "key detection time" set to (0ms) and "pull up resistor" set to Automatic detection.
The latter two settings, I think, are default anyway. If this doesn't work, I will double-check when I am home.
I do notice the stock reverse camera to be worse off as well on the new display, but keep in mind it is only 480p or something. I have the 2.5k screen, and it does look really good, although a bit grainy and seems to glitch in and out here and there.
Don't mistake the glitching in and out to cause no viewibility, It's more artefact-y It does still work fine, though.
@@zyawillis8040 Glad you guys found a fix for the volume! And yeah the OEM camera is a bit more grainy on the idoing, but as said the size and resolution of the screen is larger. Probably more an issue of the OEM camera than the unit at this point i think! Cheers
I got one and for some reason the color changing did not work.
I contacted the company they suck. They did not help me. Sucked
Also the audio setting sucks. It's super complicated to adjust I have no idea what I'm looking at. Also I have no idea how to update it.
I've been having it for a year and I'm still trying to figure it out. It's really annoying. Also the install was a pain bc you really have to smack the crap out of it for it to snap on
Also now for some reason the steering wheel learning sucks
Worked great at first but not anymore. Good luck.
Hopefully you get a good unit
does the fader work with your HK system? I bought the 2k version with my HK system. And fader does not work. It treats all speakers as front speakers.
There is a known limitation with fader/balance with HK systems at this stage it seems. It’s one I added more info about in this video description too. It doesn’t personally bother me as I don’t ever change those settings. If you haven’t, it’s worth contacting Idoing over it as hopefully they’ll resolve it.
@@BenCadalso iDoing said they don't have a fix for it. Just a limitation. So I will go with my workaround.
@@BenCadI'm working on a fix now. Downloaded the service manual. And got the pin outs from the HK amp and pin outs on the iDoing head unit. Basically I am going to disconnect the rear speakers from the HK Amp. And run it directly to iDoing head units rear speaker channel. I already tested it and it works. I have to run wire neatly and what not. But it allows me to fade. Yes the rears won't be powered by the amp anymore. But they sound better than stock connected straight to the iDoing! I feel iDoing pulled a fast one on HK owners because this should be mentioned. Thanks for the awesome video. I used it as a guide to disassemble everything.
@@allenstevenson5986 Hey thats awesome, glad there is a workaround for those with motivation! Yeah my attempt was I mucked around with plugging the rear speakers in via the RCA cords from the iDoing HU and into the OEM loom. It didn;t change anything besides the volume form the speakers. So glad you've found a proper workaround, I guess the other 'fix' is to simply upgrade the whole sound system with proper amps etc. But I doubt many of us are doing that.
thank you for this video man i was hoping they would fix the mic issue in the new gen LMK if you found a way to fix it the MIC issue pleaseee and thank you :)
Glad to hear the video was helpful, and yes I will if I do!
i’m currently working with idoing to make a new plug and play harness for the oem mic for 2018 wrx/sti.
@@riazykm Cool! keep us posted! 😀
@@riazykmany update on this? Mine came with the harness but the mic was still unusable so they had me ground the microphone wire and nothing changed. Haven’t heard anything back from them after that.
@@briannimon5340 they had me send my oem mic (which is located in the overhead controls). they are currently in the testing phase. probably will be completed within a month or 2. will update once i get my mic back with the harness they come up with.
does the apple carplay work wired? I'm led to believe the quality is better via wired
Yeah it also works wired :)
Is there a way to get CarPlay to start automatically without having to go to the app every time?
Sort of - I did find a way to move the app to the front dashboard so you don't have to scroll through if you set it up. Additionally, the unit has a memory and will remember where you left it if you come back to the car within a reasonable period of time. Hope that helps! Cheers
I would do it but only if the screen 2as actually flat againts the frame. And if jt kept the oem buttons. I like the oem. But no android auto :(
Flat would be nice but I think it’s the only way to get a bigger screen in, a choice would be good!
@@BenCad yea. I would actually like it if it was the same size as oem
I assume installing this unit from my observation, would you lose the ability to play cd’s?
Correct! No CD’s (or DVD’s) can achieve similar with a USB stick If you’re not keen for phone connectivity.
Do you lose remote start and heated steering wheel and seats?
I don’t think so, you’re really only changing your head unit (audio/infotainment stuff). But my car (wrx STI) doesn’t have remote start or a heated steering wheel.
Will this unit hook up to subs and will it still perform good ? I just have an old school alpine right now with 12 in alpines but I’m definitely interested in this unit
It should do, it comes with a wiring harness for wiring up with RCA's for wiring to an aftermarket amp, you can see the wires in the unboxing bit. Also the OEM factory sub does work as set up here. Hope that helps, you can always message them to ask before purchase just to be 110% sure!
I just set mine up last night and yes it works
Does anyone else that owns this unit see vertical lines (I think touch sensor lines) on the screen when it is in direct sunlight?
Can’t say I’ve noticed this on mine.
@@BenCad Just lucky me then 😭
Hey bro, just wondering, my steering wheel controls don't work, how can i reset them or reprogram
So you've installed the unit? Had you gotten the steering wheel controls working before? The instruction manual has a bit on steering wheel setup programming, I followed that to setup mine which i thought was pretty easy. If you're still having trouble, is it possible you missed connecting a wire? I had a random wire fall completely out of view deep in the dash when installing mine when i had to go back for. Hope that helps somewhat.
@@BenCadI just bought a WRX that had it already installed, the only seatings are volume down and next track, both are set to skip to next song. i want to rest the buttons, also on my unit i don't have a controls app to set them..
@@BenCad I have figured it out, some of my SWC don't work , says " memory learning failed, check dealer or re learn" idk why that means
@@Kytrixofficial hmm i havent seen that one mine, its been fine. So its fixed, or are you at stuck at those messages?
@Kytrixofficial, try changing the setting "Key tolerance" from 125mV default to 50 mV; that helped me. This was suggested by IDoing support person.
Regarding the app to change the steering wheel settings, not sure if it is a separate app. For me, it is under Settings -> Common -> Steering wheel Keys learn. See if you can find that.
Does it work with SiriusXM?
Not sure personally, we don’t get that service in Australia! 🇦🇺
@BenCad
Hey Ben, just fyi wrxdaily said that version of the head unit has a low quality processor in it. I sent them a link to this video asking them if they had this version of the head unit in inventory and this is what they said,
"We are currently selling the latest IDoing head unit's available. The version you provided a link to is the same head unit, but with a different processor. This processor is lower quality and is less-reliable than the "7862" processor which is currently in thousands of customer cars. It is not "outdated" per say, it is just made by a different company. The version we have listed on our website has been proven to be a higher quality product, which is why it's the only version we offer!"
Hmm.. If you look at all 3 iDoing models I've linked to in the description the newer models ALSO reference having the processor "7862" (View more button, search with control + F on the products linked in my description, or on iDoing's website). We don't have that retailer in Australia but regardless it does seem unusual that when compared that the spec sheets, pricing and spec sheets between them seem to say otherwise especially considering they appear to be a newer product? Unsure on those comments on how or where it's made as these are sold directly from iDoing too and reference the same things. Not saying they are right or wrong here because buying these units is absolutely & clearly confusing as all hell, the model they sell is the one I thought I purchased originally haha! But if that is also the only version they sell (outside of arguably having sales bias) you could say WRX daily has done due diligence in choosing a single iDoing Unit to resell that they believe meets the right balance of needs for their community with right mix of quality, price and value and offers it in a simpler and less confusing buying channel than AliExpress with less need to research which is probably a good thing. I think buying these is like buying a new TV, after doing all your research and comparing side by side by the time you get the product home you won't notice much of a difference. Hopefully you'll be happy with whatever model you choose! As I mentioned at the end, I don't think I've missed out by not having the top of the line 2k screen model for example as the clarity of this is so much better and more than needed. And in terms of reliability mines still going fine now 5 months in 😃😁 Good luck with your decision, I think we can all agree iDoing need to be more clear with their models on offer and the differences between! Cheers
@@BenCad oh yeah, idoing's website manager sucks at their job, 100%. No idea what your buying if you buy direct....However, wrxdaily sells thousands these throughout each year. It's the number one place in the USA to purchase these. So it's interesting they said that, no idea if it's true or if they know something we don't. I guess the only way to know is to open one up and look at the processor. LOL. But yeah, thank for the video in any case.
Actually I stand correct, they all say it now. Pretty much (4x50W)
Great video! Very helpful and timely :). Only problem I am facing is the fade/balance issue you mentioned in the description. Actually, even with the fade/balance in the center, I feel that primarily it is just the 2 speakers in the dashboard are producing audio. Audio from all 4 door speakers is VERY low. I feel that all the premium sound system of not being used and is useless without this. And looks like it is a known issue (as you mentioned Ben). IDoing support just sent these links (which is kind of acknowledging the problem from their end).

Hope they find a solution to this.
I can understand your comment on the dashboard speaker volume, it does sound like they produce more noise with iDoing that OEM, but overall it still feels like audio quality is overall improved a lot. I've done some testing and stuck my heads up against all my speakers and audio seems to come out of all speakers as expected - although I do think it could be audio source dependent too. I've also tried plugging in some the not needed RCA cables into each other (front RCA's into the unused RCA's on the OEM loom) which does alter the volume in the front a bit, I found the front got less loud so to speak when I did this. In the end I unplugged it them, but perhaps something to try? I think overall the solution is either an improved CANBUS adapter, or ultimately the need to escape the complexities of an OEM audio system and buy an aftermarket amplifier etc. Personally, i doubt its a path I'll go down - did the big audio systems in my younger days. Hopefully iDoing can improve via software or even a better canbus adapter! Thanks for leaving a comment.
For Subaru wrx sti 2015 ?
Yeah Idoing sell a version specifically for the first gen 2014/15 models as they have a different head unit. You can find them on aliexpress. Or if you click the link in my bio you can message them there about your car and they should send you the model for your car.
I just installed and I’m getting no sound out of the front door speakers. Any help?
No good, perhaps reset the audio Mixer to default settings? And try a few different audio sources to triple check. I also had a cable I missed when I first installed it that fell deep down into the back of the dash if you need to double check your wires. Your box should have a contact number to message iDoing if you need to ask them.
