I can actually see these new online banking companies becoming successful. Let's just hope the CEO doesn't get duped into selling it to the monsters (i.e. high street banks)
After 29 years I'm swapping to Monzo and getting rid of my HSBC. account. I went to 2 different onestops. It showed me where they where. What I spent. budgets was set up by me for food ect so £16 was taken of my food budget so I can see whats left for the rest of the month. The saving acounts are funky and fun to. Any odd amount like 1p can bet rounded up into pots at add further to your savings.
I have one I agree needs direct debits and such but my problem is the established banks are just gonna copy it, this is where phones have cornered the market they can store your fingerprint the bank legally can't
This is a good idea. I personally I don't like using my bank online unless it's PayPal or a reputable site. Also I don't use my bank card when out of the country. This is a great alternative. Nice review.
I got one of these a month or two ago for an up coming trip to Spain and France. I started using it yesterday, as I'm going away in 3 weeks. I am very happy with it. Now it has full bank features. I'm thinking of moving my dd and payments to this. It reminds me very much of Giff Gaff (mobile network) that let's you quickly order new sims, but keeping the same phone number. Ie far more 21st C, way of doing things.
Always good to mention when the video was made adds so much context to product reviews! Good stuff good luck to you i like your quirky informative style how it should be! Nerdy but relatable lol cheers 👍 got my card in the post as i type
I'm really looking forward to start using this (i'm waiting for my Monzo card to come any day now) I know for sure that I will migrate from my old bank to Monzo in future. All I need is a saving account and I'll be happy. Thanks for this review.
I have a question? If the card needs to be topped up by another bank account then what’s the point in the monzo card why not just use the normal bank card you use to top monzo up?
nice sarcastic review. but one question ... if you use this card abroad will you have to pay an extra service charge like other UK banks make you ? Also second question, if you use this card abroad will it automatically calculate the exchange rate for you + without charging you an extra service charge ?
Oh yes. My workmate comes from UK and he has one of these cards. They're so beautiful in real life. :) Only card that can compare with it, colorwise, is the Transferwise one, I think.
So many new banking apps it’s hard to tell if they’re really any good or not. Everything sounds great but is the reality also a good or bad experience? Monzo kinda seems like other payment systems with benefits like Empower an example
Monzo has no customer support dept....they are impossible to contact when you have a problem with them (and you WILL have problems)...avoid at all costs...
Check out trust pilot made....more than enough one star reviews on there to make your hair stand on end. They've bitten off more than they can chew.....useless "bank"

+Mark Kearon awesome mark! Give it a go- it's a fantastic system, and it'll only get better with time and with the future release of current accounts! Glad it helped you!
You still need to have a bank account to use the Monzo card right, so you aren't actually leaving the bank? When you look at your statement with your bank, you already know where you have spent your money as it says who, it just doesn't have pretty logos. I like the ability to freeze the card and also to spend overseas without fees, that sounds great. Other than that I'm not yet seeing a huge benefit, but more a gimmick. Does it provide any other useful functionality other than what you said, like categorising finances in a detailed way and producing graphs or spreadsheets through the app?
Monzo is great until you get into trouble. Meaning the card getting blocked due to fraud check. Their customer support is pretty much useless lol. Benefits of REAL banks: 1.) Faster payment support - Instant transfers up to £2500. (Monzo supports it but takes 'mysteriously' 2-4 hours to credit in) 2.) Dedicated call center if you dont have access to internet 3.) Fraud transactions? Lloyds, Barclays, HSBS are willing to refund unknown charges However, if these guys like Monzo, Revolut and others out there take off. Big banks will definitely copy their style. I can already see barclays adding the ability to freeze your card yourself or view your PIN number on their app so you dont have to phone them.
MrTrig84 That’s good. I guess Lloyd’s app is more advance than NatWest’s and Santander. I also like the fact that I can see all my spending/outgoing at a glance instead of going over bank statements, using highlighters or spreadsheets and calculators.
This isn't specific to Monzo I guess, but what happens if you lose your phone with the app on? Seems like you could be screwed then. All these advances in technology are fine until devices get lost/stolen. I have had one for about a year but haven't even used it yet as I'm not in the UK much and have been using other accounts. Might give it whirl soon....
+Caroline Macdonald hey Caroline! Great questions- there's no charge for conversions, and yes you can withdraw cash abroad at no cost too! Hope this helps? Don't forget to like and subscribe 😬👍! x
nikos t yes. And now its current acount not prepaid anymore. After a while you can set up overdraft also after first wage 20 £ overdraft and later more.
There is a big reason why the pending is there, take this for instance you order a dominoes the moment you order that transaction is pending (rather than taken), something goes wrong dominoes have no pizzas left (highly unlikely I know, the point is the reason can be anything), now what happens if the money was taken? You'd have to make a claim and it takes months to sort many phone calls yada yada. Well this pending process saves you from this (even fraudulent transactions), if something happens the money automatically gets put back up to 14 days.
You can ask for a refund if it's fraudulent or if for some reason there is no more pizza left at dominoes. Being that you are able to provide evidence somehow.
Perhaps someone who wants to spend their own money abroad without being charged a penny. Or perhaps someone who wants instant payments and Instant updates when money is sent/received.
I'm waiting on my card to get sent over. What happens if you lose your phone though? Very serious question as I am that person who loses their phone often.
Well, people won’t be able to do much with your phone if it’s locked... and you sign into your account with your email, so if you lost your phone, sign in with your email on your new phone and it’ll keep all your details saved! Hope that answers your question? Lastly... stop losing your phone 😜!
ok, it is a good idea, however, if you need some loam / borrow money in the future, to buy a house, a car, a truck for your business, so what??? Monzo, probably won´t help you there, and you won´t have credit score with the banks that can "help" you!!!! sounds like a massive dilemma to me!!!!

Revolut does and don't forget that your expenses comes out straight from your account instead of it pending for 2 - 5, sometimes 6 days
The benefit is that you don’t have to pay to withdraw cash in a foreign country. Usually banks charge you and there’s and fee to exchange money
I think that there should be an auto top up option, like there is with with Bpay.
Good suggestion!
