Just wanted to let you know that you've served as such an inspiration to me. I found you through your UX articles, and you've encouraged me to pursue UX design, as well as continue to make youtube videos. so THANK YOU!!
Hi @chunbuns!! You’re awesome for sharing all this info thank you :) question below ⬇️ Given the circumstances with Covid-19 and having to switch over to online learning, which boot camps would you suggest? Could you let me know which ones below are the top two i should consider regardless of price. 1. Design lab 2. Springboard 3. Tradecraft 4. Careerfoundry 5. Bloc 6. Flatiron school Also, do you suggest a 3 month or 6 month bootcamp?
Thank you so much for this video! I’m thinking of enrolling in a UX program at GA but wasn’t sure. But this really helped me in the decision making. I’ll definitely look into some of the other schools as well.
Thanks for the info, I am a 9 year Career Web Designer/FrontEnd Dev> I was just admitted into GA NYC for the UX Full-time class. I walked away from a Dead end 9 to 5 for this opportunity...well after not being able to find a job for 4 months because of the quick evolution of Web Design branching off into UI/UX etc.. Hoping this will help supplement my career! I'll probably start updating my portfolio after my 3rd project. I have already been in communication with Job recruiters who are aware I am in this program... Maybe I will move back to Florida... of heck maybe colorado, austin, dallas or North Cali.
I'm a new media major in college right now, focusing in web design and frontend dev, why did you walk alway from that job and think its a dead end job?
@@noelle5128 Thanks for checking back in :) It went great actually. I was at the NYC Campus, Not to mention all the fun we have along the way. I took two courses in a row which I don't recommend. UX Immersive and WebDev Immersive. UX was by far the most fun. My instructors were all aces in the craft and really receptive and strategic with the students. I would definitely recommend to newcomers to be prepared to make the class your life when starting it and to keep your skills fresh, up to date, and polished throughout the job-seeking process. I was hired and had a job waiting for me before graduating from the second class. I was pretty fortunate.
@@liwen12345678 I was held back, there was no room to grow as it was already a troubling market for major electronic cig manufacturers.. I just knew in my gut it was time to leave. Not to mention the bad management/treatment of talented employees.
Hey christine, this video is amazing. Finding a way to make content aesthetic and insightful is no easy task! I was wondering, as a Junior in Highschool, how do I make a career for myself in UX?
This was really helpful! I'm a rising college senior with a Bio degree but I know I don't want to do the traditional roles and am trying to break into tech. Can you do a video/post on your story from Chemistry to UX design?
I wanna change job to UX design. You said boot camp was enough for getting job 2 years ago. How about now ? Still is it enough for getting job or more difficult to get a job as finished boot camp ?
Do you really need to go bootcamp for become ux designer? Tons of information you can reach in these days on the internet? Could you make a video about this
you know what, the funniest part is 1. in my country, just getting a salary of 500$ is already very happy, the standard salary in my country is 200$ -300$ 🤣 2. now I have to raise about 5-10 years to reach 10.000$, to join bootcamp for about 1 month 🤣 3. and ux designer salary in this country is only 400$ - 800$ 🤣
maybe if you have time, you can create content about online courses or whatever learning media is about ux design, which is not too expensive for people like me
Is the course that you took with GA for suited for complete beginners with no design background ? Or should they have some basic understanding ? @chunbuns
Hi Christine, Thanks for the good vid. I am intrested in transitioning to tech in UX design? What do you think of Lambda School or Harvard X and UC. Berkeley Extension booth camp? And what kind of potential should I have to be a good UX designer?

It took me a month. I made sure to focus on updating my portfolio before applying to jobs, which I think helped me to focus on the content of my work, ultimately getting me more job interviews. Everyone's path is different and there are different factors that can influence your job search (ie. job postings fluctuate throughout the year depending on seasons, etc)

There's so many people trying to transition into UX design, specifically in the bay area. The market for more "junior" UX designers is saturated but I'd still say there's high demand for UX/product designers.
I'm working full-time as an analyst, I wonder if I can do UX projects as a side hustle, gain experience and enter the more-senior-than-junior UX positions? Also, is remote/telecommute work common/uncommon in this line of work? I see lots of post-its and collab between teams..
b0rtie if it’s free do it. Only if part time is free. If your going to pay a nickel they better have a job placement program otherwise your throwing your money in the garbage & it better be full time to make sure other students and teachers have 100% priority and focus on you .
Cannot believe this is a two-year-old video and it was already extremely saturated back then. Thank you so much for letting people know the reality about the boot camps. When I decided to transition into UX, I seriously thought boot camps were a scam. So I took almost free online courses instead, put up a portfolio and settled my first official UX job...
I was wondering about this. I've been looking at DesignLab's course, but I'm curious whether it is necessary for me because I'd be taking out a loan xD
@@katieroehrich8199 I paid attention to DesignLab's course too. But it looks like they have a lot of reading materials to read on your own. And you pre-pay a lot of mentor sessions at the price of $100 each time (This is how I break down their fee) Instead I would recommend a RookieUp starter kit (49$ for a whole lot of reading materials) and hire a mentor once you need it ($25+ each session). It is much more flexible. I recommend RookieUp :)
@@janieliu9713 May I ask how long did it take you from deciding the transition to landing the first UX job? I recently dived into this field and would like to know more about your journey if you don't mind!
I generally don't recommend virtual courses for UX but with any courses/bootcamp/institutions, it's what you make of it that will help you grow and learn. With that said, pick the option that makes the most sense for you and just make sure to do a lot of outside learning as well (ie. connecting with other designers and asking them what tools you need to know how to use, their go-to resources, etc.) I wrote a Medium post on some good resources as well: blog.usejournal.com/ux-design-resources-every-beginner-should-know-4fd2d4fde41b
Hello Christine, I have an IT engineering degree but I didn't really work as a developer in the industry. I like designing so I took a certified course in 'Web, and interactive media designing' form UCSC extension, Santa Clara and I also worked in a startup company for around 2 years. After that, I am unemployed for about 2 years. I am struggling to get a job in Design. Sometimes I feel I need to change the profile. I don't know what to do at this point. Please help me (pour your suggestions as I am lost now). I am a Pharma graduate (B.pharm and MBA) and have 3 years of experience as Business Analyst in Pharma consulting and then I took 5 year break as I was in US and was on dependent visa and couldnt work. Last year, I moved to Canada and thought of doing web development (My husband is a senior developer(senior Architect). so I got influenced by him and thought I could do this. I joined a bootcamp (studied JS basics in order to join this) and learned full stack in Nov 2018. I dragged through out the bootcamp. After Finishing the bootcamp, I took a break of 1 month and went to my home country and forgot most of the things.. When I came back I started learning... I realized that I suck at Back end and may b I can learn Front End. I started from the basics and did the Odin Project which help me learn the basics. Still I am not comfortable with JS. I literally become so anxious while doing coding. I enjoy simple HTML and CSS but when it comes complex logic, I become anxious and frustrated. Now I am so lost, sometime I feel I should do some thing creative like UX/UI designer. OR I should do some Market analyst diploma (which matches my prior experience). and some time I feel I should go back to my learning and excel in JS. I am so lost and depressed. I am not working and feel like I am not good enough. What should I do. I am not sure if I go UX/UI design route, then how competitive it would be and what are the job opportunities for this. I find that In Canada(I live in Toronto), Junior web developer market is oversaturated and then demand is way less than supply for junior roles. Please suggest. Thanks
