    I was in the hospital 5 days before they diagnosed OH. Did all these tests (MRIs, X-Rays, etc....) and nothing and it wasn't until my wonderful nurse (not a doctor) came in and took my blood pressure lying down, sitting, and standing that we figured out what it was. Thank you so much Rachael. Thank you for those who produced this video.

    My wife has this problem. Your presentation is excellent and re-affirms what our doctor told us last week. The part about reducing hypertension meds when no longer need after years of medication, was absolutely spot on. Thank you passing on your knowledge to us all.

    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. My 76 year old mother has been treated for labile hypertension for several years now with a low 12.5mg (twice daily) dose of losartan to lower BP and a small 5mg dose of buspar for anxiety with the hope of lowering BP. She just spent a full week in the hospital following an episode where she was standing and became unresponsive but was helped to a chair before she fainted. After multiple CT's, MRI's, EEGs it was realized that she has orthostatic hypotension. Your video is extremely helpful in arming us with a better understanding of the topic so that we can challenge her current course of care. Since it appears that she has supine hypertension and orthostatic hypotension, your tip with raising the head of the bed is something we will give a try. Thanks again!!

      When people lose weight, especially a lot of weight, the often go through a period where their BP drops a lot with standing (OH). I've seen this with people who have had weight loss surgery. (People often feel colder after losing weight, too.) Generally if folks keep up the running, weight loss, and push the fluids, things eventually settle down a bit. Congrats on the awesome weight loss! Stay healthy!

    The first time this happened to me I was probably 12 or 13 and it really spooked me. My mam and sister were worried so they took me to the hospital. And the doctor basically just told me to go home. It still happens to me at least twice a day and I’m now 16. And of course my mam says “it’s because of that phone”. I started getting really bad headaches when I was 14 too.
      Going out drinking has always been a problem for me, as being in nightclubs where getting water is difficult often leads to massively painful headaches, restricting both fun and pulling ability. this is partly due to fog machines, which can cause fainting.
      iboprofen helps because it raises the blood pressure, but is by no means a good solution.
      so when I'm at work or school or out in the town, I wear compression "knee-highs" and drink water until I cannot drink any more. that usually helps.

    When will the medical industry finally stop focusing on silly band aids for symptoms and start focusing on the underlying causes instead?!? Very frustrating.

    • @AndrewReevesNeurology
      @AndrewReevesNeurology  4 года назад +2

      ...because for so many diseases and conditions, we don't know the underlying cause(s), or sometimes we do know the cause but can't do anything about it. What's the "cause" for migraines? For most people with high blood pressure? Treating symptoms is hardly useless; when you cut yourself and then put a band aid on it, do you feel silly? I doubt it.

    Aww, Jake 😍 Ok, sooo - I have a 60 year old male - diabetic, cva stroke w/ left side paralysis, high bp & cholestrol & double bypass 6 months ago (had minor heart attack) heavy smoker 2+ packs a day and moderate marijuana user. He suddenly had a drop in BP 78/95 and kept falling - refused ems service. He was complaining of being freezing cold in 95 degree heat, so I gave him 10mg of Midodrine and that helped tremendously. Today he’s slightly better but still weak. BP is 112/60. What could be causing these sudden drops? It only happens when he gets paid and chain smokes & smokes a lot of pot. I’m afraid he toasted his bypass grafts already,

    • @AndrewReevesNeurology
      @AndrewReevesNeurology  4 года назад

      Wow. That certainly sounds like a guy whose pulmonary and/or cardiac systems are *right on the knife edge*. And at 60 years old! If he has a bad heart, you'd worry about increasing afterload on the heart by midodrine, due to its vasoconstrictive effects; it increases BP, but at the expense of increased workload on the heart, to some degree. Tough case....! Of course not smoking is a good thing, but if it were easy to quit, everyone would.

    Would using a "Teeter Inversion Table" a few minutes a day be beneficial in helping out in alleviating one's battle with Orthostatic Intolerance ( Hypotension ) ??

    Hey man, how well does lifting the bed up work? Also, does smoking contribute to this kinda hypertension? I think I have extremely low BP while laying down and relatively high BP standing up.
    On the other hand I've cleaned out my diet, lost a lot of weight and workout nearly every day.

    • @AndrewReevesNeurology
      @AndrewReevesNeurology  4 года назад

      Raising the bed head does help some folks with OH. However, you describe the opposite of OH; BP going UP with standing is called orthostatic hypertension, and is more poorly understood than OH! I do see it with some frequency, though.

      @@AndrewReevesNeurology any tips? I am quite confused on what to do. I've been doing step ups on a chair in the house to get my body "used to" getting up quick. Kind of helping bit I'm unsure if that really will do anything. Any idea?

      Hard to say, since I don't know your entire case and haven't done formal autonomic testing on you. But if what you're doing is helping, sounds like a decent thing to continue!

      @@mikegrand4181 Thank you, I fixed the problem. I had adrenal fatigue. Vit C, Magnesium and B5 were the most important. Also doing regular excersize is important. I also take a lot of vit D3, very important. And as you mention, salt is important as well. Thank you for your reaction.

    My mother has severe low BP when standing and high when sitting. When she stands I have to drag her to the couch because her BP shoots down to about 60/40.

    • @AndrewReevesNeurology
      @AndrewReevesNeurology  6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like bad OH. It can be very hard to treat or deal with, unfortunately. With terrible neurogenic OH the vascular system essentially becomes a capacitance circuit, and not able to help regulate BP.

    As an EMT we would treat hypotension with fluids, is that a bad idea for orthostatic hypotension is it ok?

    • @AndrewReevesNeurology
      @AndrewReevesNeurology  5 лет назад +2

      Fluids will help, but only for a while. The effect wears off pretty quickly as intravascular volume re-equilibrates. Colloids and albumin work better than D5w, due to osmotic differences, but still the effect is relatively short-lived and so doesn't really work for ongoing tx. Great question!
